Angel of the Eastern Gate

I'm in love with impressionism and I want to include it in my work. In order to do so, I need to study the style first, which led to this personal project of painting Aziraphale and Crowley in some of the scenes which Monet painted in his work.

That was the initial thought, then while trying to post on IG, I came up with short writings to give my audience a context. Now, I don't know if I could continue writing silly short conversations between the husbands to accompany the paintings in the future, but oh well let's just do it while I can.

Sorry for the yap. I have only done 3 paintings so far...

- Religious satire/commentary (the absurdity regarding the bet with Job, the archangels being generally clueless, the deconstruction of how to-the-letter you need to be with following the laws of religion)

- Genuinely funny (Ty Tennant having like 3 minutes of screen time and out-fruiting his dad, Jemima and her pot and wanting to be turned into a salamander, Bildad the Shuhite and all that that entails)

- an emotional, character-driven core (Aziraphale learning the limits of his own morality, the discussion of the role good and evil play in events and how each is perceived when done by different parties, learning just how similar Aziraphale and Crowley are as it pertains to personal desires (which we as the viewer know, but chronologically it’s one of the first times they connect like they do)

And of course

The first time I saw this I remember sitting right up, my mouth fell open and my hands clasped at my chest because it's. just. so. damn.soft. Plus, I love any reminders of their supernatural abilities. I have, on multiple occasions over the years, gone and watched just this moment and it never fails to make me grin with glee - it's the most perfect glimpse into the real dynamic between these two and such lovely insight into Crowley's character I think (and Aziraphale's tbh).

He has special interests that he obsesses over and gets very, very excited about (books, food, magic tricks, etc).

He masks CONSTANTLY. He feels the need to put on a more "socially acceptable" facade in front of most people (the other angels especially), to diminish and minimize the quirkier aspects of his personality so that he won't be mocked or looked down on.

But the one person he can truly be HIMSELF with, the one who he feels safe with, is Crowley. Crowley might poke gentle fun at him sometimes, but he never makes him feel unworthy or like he needs to pretend to be someone else.

It's one of my favorite elements of the 1941 flashback in S2. Aziraphale is bubbling over with SO mucn excitement about his magic show. And Crowley COULD mock him, could roll his eyes and tell him to stop embarrassing himself.

But he doesn't. He encourages him, helps him, lets him have his fun. Because I think he absolutely LOVES how silly and quirky and fun his angel can be, when he lets his guard down.

It's much the same concept as Crowley taking off his sunglasses in the bookshop. They can be true to themselves around each other, in ways they can't around anyone else.

One thing I absolutely love is that Aziraphale almost always keeps his hands behind his back when he's talking to the other angels in Heaven. (The main exception is when he's lying to them, then he suddenly starts gesturing far more than usual, almost unnaturally so, even by his own standards.) But around Crowley, he doesn't seem embarrassed by his very expressive hand gestures, his "strange" mannerisms, or any of the other little things that make him who he is.

He knows Crowley accepts him exactly as he is. Even when Crowley grumbles about Aziraphale wanting to perform as a magician at Warlock's birthday party in Season 1, I've always felt that his irritation comes more from how stressed he is about the whole Antichrist situation. He thinks something has gone terribly wrong and that there's a very real chance they're going to lose.

I'm not even sure whether this would count as stimming, but I've always wondered if the way Aziraphale is constantly rubbing his fingers together could be seen as a form of self-regulation.

And, God... poor Aziraphale having to spend three years back in that Hell disguised as Heaven. I would've died from sensory overload alone with how overwhelmingly bright everything is

This is what I actually think.

Because look at Season 2! something like 80% of that was pure filler. gaiman's wrist starting cramping coming up with filler so he even farmed it out to other writers! (nowadays it would be chatgpt).

There probably was a meandering, ultimately pointless 1941 part 3 featuring Aziraphale shooting some zombies and then being made to do the sadistic I am Wrong dance. There probably was some cowboy nonsense where Aziraphale is stupid and falls off a horse and Crowley sneers at him.

I don't give a shit. It's going to be filler. Because if there was anything in those scripts that wasn't filler, they would have filmed it. There was filler in the finished movie, even.

There is NOTHING that could have been written that explains why it's good to coerce a crying person who wants to live to kill themselves. Shakespeare couldn't have done it.

None of the actually big issues with this season have to do with things being cut. Because the big issues are that the show forgot what genre it was and that it was deliberately written to go against the expectations of the only people who wanted to see it.
