Don’t get me wrong, I love cool stuff and action figures just as much as the next guy or gal….

But the FALLOUT franchise is simply not the kind of property that lends itself well to…… this.

Its gotten out of fuckin control.

The Fallout series originally, especially in its thematic text. Was focused on condemning the culture and golden age consumption of its pre-war world by showing its consequences.

There is nothing left but radiation, decay, junk, scrap and blood.

When your character in FO1 picks up a pre-war food item for the first time, you got a text box describing the strangeness and uselessness of it to your character while they were observing its contents. It was just one of the many other charred, scattered remains of a gone away world with history in overpopulation, rampant consumerism and ceaseless greed that ultimately destroyed itself.

In Fallout 3, the food items and other junk merchandise remnants of the that destroyed world litter the crumbling ruined streets and collapsed metro stations, dirtied, rotting and fading. Highly irradiated, dangerous to consume.

But fast forward today and now those meaningless mock brands have turned into brand identity. Bethesda has commercialised every minor element and facet of this universe and franchise to sell unironic overpriced products to the masses, you are made to feel nostalgic for this stuff, meant to want it and consume it. It is troubling…
