i think harry made an honest mistake that lead to a fan being misgendered which i'm sure was an extremely uncomfortable/hurtful experience for them. i don’t know if he just at that time didn’t completely understand the concept of preferred pronouns, or if he had a difficult time correcting himself once he had already made that assumption of their identity. either way, it was a terrible error on his part and i’m sure he has since then become more educated on this subject.

but this incident is one of the reasons why i fight so hard for you all to understand that what i say about harry's gender is bigger than harry. this is why i constantly bring up the real life implications of calling someone cis without knowing that that's how they identify. when you assume someone's gender, you've already decided how they identify, and it's very difficult to break that once you've done it.

trans people are absolutely capable of misgendering others too. even though we understand our own struggle or relationship with gender, it's really hard to know someone else's without them telling you, and if we don't make our own changes in reworking how cisnormativity and binary gender have shaped our views of others, we're still using the same identifiers of gender that we were raised to see as perceived cis bodies.

my roommate knows that i'm non-binary. we've been close friends for a decade, and i've only just this year come out to her. we have conversations about gender identities and she's extremely open and accepting. but one of her favorite artists is sam smith. and it's constant moments of educating herself and slipping up and referring to them with their pronouns assigned at birth. but she also does her best to use they/them and corrects herself when she messes up.
