I donât trust people who donât like 80s pop music like what are you? straight? grow up
Blossoming Trees, 1882, Childe Hassam
sometimes I hate how much modern clothing is determined to show womenâs bodies
like if itâs not skimpy, itâs skin-tight- leggings, skinny jeans, bodycon dresses, etc.
doing historical costuming has made me hyper-aware of just how âon displayâ my body is when Iâm wearing normal modern outfits, and it affects my behavior. donât bend over to pick things up at work because men will stare at your ass. sit differently so you donât show stomach rolls. a guy running a pop-up stand next to my shop commented so much on how I had âgreat legsâ that I didnât wear leggings and skirts- one of my favorite winter outfit combinations -for the rest of the season
thereâs a certain freedom in medium-to-long skirts and skirt supports, I find: the freedom to define what people see of my body. men wonât stop being creepy no matter what women wear, but I like that kind of dramatic body re-framing. you donât get to see my legs and hips, Creepy Guys. you get to see a massive bell skirt, or a bustle, or an upended trumpet flower shape. my body is to be seen only by those Iâve chosen to trust, not the world at large
of course, empowerment is different for different women. some feel comfortable and powerful showing as much of their shape as possible, and I applaud them in doing exactly that. what pisses me off is the pressure from the fashion industry for all of us to be empowered by the same thingâŠa thing that just so happens to tie in with the diet industry and the cosmetics industry. itâs easier to sell the idea that you have to be hairless and smooth and thin and blemish-free when itâs all on display
sometimes I just wish I could go about in a hoop skirt and a t-shirt that says âfuck offâ in delicate script
BEST RESPONSE TO ANY POST OF MINE EVER
THANK YOU
Technically unless thereâs a dress code for your work or whatever thereâs nothing that says you canât wear a hoop skirt everywhere.
Fight the man.
Wear a hoop skirt if you want.
I see this post a lot and Iâm sure Iâve seen someone I follow add on this as well but if you agree with the sentiment of this post I really hope you also support hijabis and niqabis, because that is more or less the core of how we dress. Observing hijab is religious, yes, but dressing modestly is like as OP said âmy body is to be seen only by those Iâve chosen to trust, not the world at largeâ. that is the exact sentiment behind why I wear niqab (the religious reasons for wearing it I donât feel comfortable talking about a lot, because how i express my faith is personal and between me and Allah(SWT)), because I get to choose who sees my body and how much of it they see and because I like having that control and I think itâs fun and I enjoy it!
If you now support people choosing to dress modestly for whatever reason, you must include supporting hijabis and niqabis who have been dressing modestly forever.

Legally Blonde (2001) dir. Robert Luketic
As opposed to that quote about âthe horrifying ordeal of being known,â do yâall ever feel so positively UNKNOWN and UNSEEN that it frightens you? Like thereâs a self that you feel on the inside, and you believe to be âyou,â but it seems like nobody else sees that version of you? And theyâre interacting with someone that isnât you but a projection of their experience of you? Whatâs more, perhaps nobody will ever know your true essence and you will die without ever being fully realized????? Iâm only two beers in honestly

Over the past few months I have asked a male architect for ideas & drafts for the renovation of the farmhouse, and at every turn I am stunned by his utter disregard for any cleaning-related concerns. For example, he is very into the idea of having in the living-room a big, non-openable window near the ceilingâwhich, granted, looks pretty, like having a piece of blue sky when you raise your eyes, but immediately Iâm like, with a high ceiling, how will I clean this? You canât open it so you have to clean both sides separately, and you canât easily reach either side. Iâll need a tool with an absurdly long telescopic handle. He says, a stepladder. Iâm like, but Iâll need to carry it by myself to the living-room and the front of the house every time. âSo?â So a very tall stepladder is heavy? And it will be hard not to get dirty water dripping down the wall. He reacts like he canât believe he is being asked to bring the concept of dirty soap water into his grand designs, like these are base, trifling considerations, when to me itâs a crucial factor in the decision to add this decorative window.
Similarly we both agree on leaving most of the wood beams exposed because theyâre old and beautiful, but when I ask if we ought to insulate in such a way as to cover every other one, so the remaining ones are farther apart and itâs harder for spiders to use them as ready-made anchors for their webs, he just looks disgusted, like âI am talking about Architecture and you bring up spiderwebs.â At this point I start to entertain the idea that men make horrible architects. You design someoneâs house to give them a nice, convenient space to live in, not to make their life more difficult. A man who has never used a sponge in his life should not be allowed to graduate from architect school and thatâs the end of it.

Theory:
So you know how dwarves have that thing with beards? What if thatâs not just a cultural standard or mere coincidence? What if thereâs a reason?
See, dwarves like to dig a lot. They build underground homes, and thereâs nothing more rewarding to them than digging up some gems or valuable metals. But chipping away at all that rock and disturbing all that earth kicks up a lot of dust and dirt. If you do that every day without proper breathing protection (which Ancient Dwarves probably didnât have much access to) all those particles are going to build up in your lungs. Itâs a phenomenon we see with real miners too; eventually, they develop a host of respiratory-related problems and even lung cancer.
Now, if only dwarves had some sort of natural protection against all that fine dust. If only they had some sort of filter in front of their mouth an noseâŠ
My theory states that, through natural selection, dwarves developed more and more dense facial hair as a defense mechanism.
It should be noted that this interpretation also supports the âfemale dwarves have beards tooâ line of thought. It makes very little sense for half the population not to have that intrinsic protection, after allâŠ
This world-building has me legit grinning.
I like this one.
This suggests that the micro-structures of dwarf beard hair are a lot more complex than ordinary hair, possibly including skin oils or other compounds with antimicrobial properties.
It also suggests that some of the dwarven durability reflected in their tabletop game Constitution bonuses are because they have built-in HEPA filters.
And that in turn suggests that shaving a dwarfâs beard or causing magical hair loss would have negative health impacts for the individual in question, suddenly breathing unfiltered air for the first time. Asthma, allergies, bronchitis, even pneumonia.
Now that you mention it, Iâm imagining each dwarven hair having micro-barbules along the shaft, to form a fine mesh in more than one direction at once.
Also, that their beards may be a microscopic ecosystem with unique species of lice, etc. living within their beards that would feed on the spores and microbes caught within it.
Thus, making their beards âself cleaningâ â unlike a man-made HEPA filter, the beards donât get clogged over time.
And dwarves love and care and decorate their beards so much because like⊠itâs not just accessory, itâs a whole face terrarium. Just like anyone else with a plant or a fish, some people want to make it look extra pretty or minimalist or whatever style. Plus of course you may have exotic variations based on environment, because the air and rocks could be different. Touching a dwarf beard or heavens forbid tugging it is like running up to a fish tank in a strangerâs house and tapping the glass - you donât do that. Dwarven beard care is like gardening and owning a pet rolled into one.
This is the only truth I will accept about dwarven beards now.
@themysteriousinternetentity OSHA-compliant beards.
