One of the official maps of the DC Universe has a couple of oddities.
The New Jersey coast/New York City archipelago is radically different. It appears as if Long Island is much smaller and entirely to the southwest of Manhattan, replacing Staten Island. And apparently the Staten Island landmass is shifted heavily south and shattered into an island chain, upon which Gotham is situated.
And most people gloss Keystone City and Central City as the DC equivalents of Kansas City, as they're a twin-city metropolitan area split across the Kansas-Missouri border... but they're oddly shifted a bit north.
This region of Missouri, around St. Joseph, has some names that oddly sound like the shitty fictional DC cities, like Agency, Avenue City, Mound City, King City, Union Star, Conception Junction, and Amazonia. Should have placed Wonder Woman here.
Green Arrow has this mixed identity as both a Robin Hood pastiche and a circa-1970 late-hippy leftist type, so I guess the thought process was "nearest massive forest to San Francisco." So that Mendocino/Trinity area it is.
They should lean into the DC weirdness and bring in the Mt. Shasta mythos. Have Green Arrow meet the space brothers.
And the real answer should have been to put him in the Nottingham neighborhood of Sacramento
How the fuck does a city of less than 100k people have Manhattan levels of skyscrapers? Also why is Captain Marvel here, isn't that the other one
Yeah, the demographics of everything here (except Brooklyn and Phoenix, for some reason) are shockingly low.
In my head, Gotham City and Metropolis always felt like NYC/Chicago tier cities, but this population count puts Gotham as smaller than the real life Jersey City, at about the same level as Buffalo.
I'm also wondering what "annual crimes" here means. Are we talking about every category of crime, like zoning issues, bad check writing, minor shoplifting, or "superhero" crimes like murder, terrorism, and bank heists? Because if that's what they're counting, Star City seems like a fucking nightmare
The DC Captain Marvel was this guy:
They renamed him Shazam about a decade or ao ago to avoid confusion with the four or so Marvel Captain Marvels.
Which of them came first? How come one didn't sue the other for copyright/trademark infringement?
The Shazam Captain Marvel was created all the way back in 1939, and DC actually took Fawcett comics to court over the similarities to Superman. The legal troubles gummed up Captain Marvel to the point that he stopped being published in 1953. In 1972, DC acquired licensing rights to him, and then fully purchased Fawcett comics' IP in 1991.
During this hazy legal grey area, two other Captains Marvel appeared. The first showed up in 1960, under Mother Fucker Enterprise's comic line.
He had the power to split his limbs, a power that often crops up among shitty characters that blow, and every other power. He seemed have the Superman flying brick set along with sonic blasts, radio hearing, telekinesis, shapeshifting, and time travel, along with whatever the fuck. His villains were such creative figures as Prof. Doom, the Bat, and Dr. Fate. He showed up in 6 issues, detaching his limbs and manipulating sound until he became a footnote.
The next one was Captain Marvel, or Mar-Vell, in 1967. He was an alien spy of the Kree empire, and actually a surprising font of cosmic Marvel lore, such as the Kree, the Supreme Intelligence, and Ronan the Accuser. He was also trapped in the negative zone, so like the Shazam! Captain Marvel, Marvel Captain Marvel switched placed with a normal human, Rick Jones, using wrist bands. He had a three hour time limit in our positive universe before he would be drawn back into the negatice zone. All that cosmic radiation eventually meant he caught cancer and died.
He had the most generic costume. Imagine a generic superhero costume made by a 12 year old. That's Mar-vell.
About a decade after he died, Carol Danvers, originally debuting as the original Ms. Marvel in 1977, was promoted to being Captain Marvel. Carol Danvers's best moment was slipping into a coma and giving Rogue her cool flying powers
Man, Rogue is so cool.
Anyway, the third Captain Marvel is Monica Rambeau, also known as Spectrum, Pulsar, Photon, and a couple of times as "Polaris" in error, which I suspect is caused by people forgetting which of those new names they renamed her to. She showed up in 1982.
Rambeau is probably the best of the three because she had some rather endearing traits, like struggling to control her massive cosmic powers and develop into a leader, painful physical recovery, and appearing in Next Wave. One of the cooler things here is that she often has to deal with the implications of her powers' physics; like, one time she basically fried herself by transforming into a lightning-like state near the ocean's surface. She took in-universe months to build up her strength and regain her abilities.
Can we go back to the part where Star City has a comparable per capita crime rate to Bludhaven?
