Okay, but while very dangerous, that's still much more feasible than what OP suggested was a thing. Depending on the reader, it could be relatively easy for them to be distracted from the story when needed, I assume that kept an eye out for dangerous surroundings (I would walk around the city when I was younger, reading, and do this), he presumably was going slow enough to respond to anything, etc. Getting in the backseat of your car while you are supposed to be driving for any reason is always pretty much guaranteed to cause some kind of accident.
