Bonus: If I buy a book I get to keep it! The publisher can't turn up at my house at random and confiscate all the books I bought.

once in grade 6 I saw a 'pottery making club' in a ditch on the schoolyard- I assume at some point someone realized there was actually good quality clay in the ditch and when I walked up there were about a dozen 12 year olds sitting around the few girls who had brought their water bottles out to mix the clay, and a designated spot to put the finished bowls and tablets, and people going off and collecting sticks to make designs with and i really think that's the natural state of the human race
In elementary school I learned that you can make paint out of certain sedimentary rocks on the playground if you crushed them and mixed with water and at one point I had up to 25 kindergarten through third graders making cave paintings on the underside of the slides
The nature of man is such that every so often, someone recreates the neolithic era.
Yeah, every recess
#that's because at the core humans want art and community and funny little objects to put stuff in
this is so true, regardless of materials or tools even like, if you give someone a 3D printer? they'll inevitably make funny little objects to put stuff in, hell someone even standardised a modular approach to funny little objects to put stuff in so they're all compatible because people keep making the things for the silliest most niche purposes metalworkers will make little storage objects out of metal, people who find clay in a ditch will make little clay storage objects, woodworkers will make wooden ones, etc. or like, something capable of drawing or painting with? people will end up using it to do so; kids will draw on their desks if they lack paper, i used to doodle on every single assignment sheet back in school, etc.

Hijacking this post to be an art nerd for a second:
Pottery is one of the things that humans create that stands the test of time well, but we famously also have cave paintings. When closer to the mouth of a cave, these artworks didnāt hold up to winds and sunlight, but the paintings found deeper in the cave.
We can see that the āpotteryā made of mud, dirt, gravel, etc. that children make at recess can last for long periods of time, but their chalk art either gets washed off or fades over the school year.
Weāre joking that our kids are cavemen, but theyāre both forms of Homo sapiens!!
Adults tend to reject their other base instincts as they pursue professions on one specific thing they enjoy as ācombattingā instincts is seen as āmaturingā, but children donāt do this. They do act instinctually while theyāre still growing, and we can see what humans want to do when they arenāt thinking too hard. Kids LOVE art. When I worked as a camp counselor, you could find any kid drawing, folding origami, making a construction paper collage, even reading, in a classroom when given free time. They love drawing on walls and playing with clay. When I was working with kids, it didnāt matter if they enjoyed playing sports or learning trivia MORE, there was always a want to do art.
Thatās why itās so heartbreaking that adults are truly out there trying to fulfill their art instinct with a computer and thinking it fills that need. They keep returning to the plagiarism machine to make more bastardized images because that creative urge wasnāt actually filled. People need to make art however theyāre able! It doesnāt matter if you donāt make a technical masterpiece, be it because youāre a beginner or youāre handicapped in one way or another, you need to make art however YOU can make art. When Henri Matisse became incapable of painting anymore, he switched to cutting out pieces of paper and became even more famous for his works during the Abstract Expressionism movement.
Children arenāt the only ones allowed to be shameless. Though shame is pretty good sometimes, it depends.

I remember, I was talking to a friend and he was talking about how his toddler would NOT stop painting on the walls.
And I waxed poetic about how it was funny that we had this activity, this little slice of the universal human experience of painting on the cave walls... and now we spank children for it.
and he was dead silent and then just hung up the phone. I thought I had offended him, but instead he had gone directly to the hardware store and purchased blackboard paint and redid his son's room and bought a bunch of chalk as well.
I found out because his wife called me FURIOUS that I had upset the man so badly.

repatriating the artifacts in the british museum except i give them to whichever country has historically been the greatest enemy of the country of origin. there's not enough hate in the world
Robbing the British Museum and then just giving everything back to the British is crazy
I donāt understand why people who cannot accept any moral grayness or complexity decide to join fandoms for the most emotionally complex stories and then try to shame everyone there who actually is able to understand the material.
You are not the main character when you are reading a book.
The lead character is also not the author!!
The character is a literary device!!! A vehicle of storytelling!!!!
Their morals are not your morals or necessarily the writers morals and may be wrong or bigoted or whatever else to put forward a story!!!!

hey so we put your morally grey character in a fandom. yeah half the fanbase makes them into a perfect angel who did nothing wrong and the other half depicts them as a cartoonishly evil villain who hurts people for fun. no we dont know how to explain that people can do bad things for good reasons or good things for bad reasons. sorry man
"theyll hate you for this" "but theyll be alive" is THE juiciest thing to me
i will ensure you stay alive above all else. even if what i do to make it happen is horrendous. even if it violates all your wishes or moral principles. even if you can never look at me the same way again, even if you hate me for it. because at least if you hate me it means youre alive
āI donāt put politics in my storiesā is the literary equivalent of a cishet guy going āI donāt have pronounsā
itās been said before and itās not even close to the worst thing but it sucks how our current robber barons are such philistines. like these guys arenāt even building libraries or concert halls. they canāt even pretend to enjoy art, and they donāt see any value in signaling that they appreciate art
like this completely ridiculous list of elon muskās alleged five favorite songs which has been going around twitter the last couple days. this is not bad taste, itās the complete absence of taste. itās the list of someone who doesnāt listen to music, who gets nothing out of music, who doesnāt even know anyone who appreciates anything about music

i have a suggestion
Anyone got that Twitter exchange where someone called out Musk for never once posting about anything that actual people enjoy? No movies, books, food, art, friends, anything. And then Musky got butthurt and spam-retweeted old movie reviews for days?

this current batch of the fithy-rich is BORING. They're BORING. Oh you have a yacht that's bigger than anybody else's yacht but functionally no different from one of your fancy houses? BORING. You have yet another fast car? YAWN. You ate a burger but like, a special burger? whatever. FUND AN OPERA ABOUT ANOTHER RICH GUY YOU HATE, DIPSHITS. How about you put a concert hall with your name on it in every city in the US and fund their operations for the next decade, if you're so rich????? unless you're too poor to afford that????? How many people do you, personally, directly employ, and what are their salaries? Do you pay well enough to command the loyalty and willing service of any masters of their craft? It would be so easy to win the absolute love and adoration of the masses in this climate but no, they wanna build bunkers and play politics in order to save a few more miserable nickles.
@capriceandwhimsy reminds me of your rabbit hole about yachts
I have thought about this for -ages-
If I was a billionair I wouldn't just be grabbing every master of the craft and saying 'Hey, I want you to make me COOL shit. Like, the coolest shit, I want you to personally make me a statue of my favorite blorbo.' I'd be going across patreon to all of my favorite artists and just, giving them shit.
I remember Rapscalion, big name porn artist, once said that he's never taking any comission again that isn't saudi prince level money because his patreon pays for him so well. I love that for him. I want to give that to my favorite patreon artists. The webcomics I've enjoyed since highschool, all of it.
I want to go and put my fucking name on libraries, and community centers, and fund off the fucking wall movies, games, and films.
Fuck owning 20 different houses and 30 different cars and a fucking yacht. Fuck owning planes and shit. You know what would be big balls energy? My own personal fucking highspeed rail line between at least two major cities. You want to get on MY fucking level? Fund a goddamn railway you losers.
