But some folk look back and claim, oh, we knew. We saw it happening. His hair grew coarser, they say, like an animal’s, but he hid it under his cap, like he hid his eyes. His nails grew long and hard. His teeth fell out and new ones grew in. Sharper, as if they’d been there all along, hidden behind his jaw, rattling in the chamber of his skull, deadly as the ideas he already propounded.
