Copyright class actions could financially ruin AI industry, trade groups say.
Further, some authors may never even find out the lawsuit is happening. The court's suggested notification scheme "would require class claimants to themselves notify other potential rightsholders," groups said, overlooking the fact that it cost Google $34.5 million "to set up a 'Books Rights Registry' to identify owners for payouts under the proposed settlement" in one of the largest cases involving book authors prior to the AI avalanche of lawsuits.
If you're an author, please use this database to see if you could qualify for that sweet GenAI lawsuit money.
Millions of books and scientific papers are captured in the collection’s current iteration.
I have never ever ever in my life asked someone to blaze my posts.
But if you want to throw me some pennies blaze this. I want ALL OF THE AUTHORS to know that they have the opportunities to get some sweet sweet GenAI lawsuit money.
Like to charge. Reblog to cast that Anthropic will have to pay out the ass.

Oh look, my book is in there. GIVE ME MONEY.
Interestingly, I reblogged this thinking it might be interesting for my followers - but as I’m not an author I didn’t think further.
Then I did think for a second. I realised I had fallen into the classic tumblr trap of believing that Authorship Equals Fantasy Fiction Writer. It’s amazing how that gets into your own head.
I went back and found a clutch of my scientific papers on there.
Not something that’s worth me pursuing any farther - and a lot of those works are very openly open access, and so they are honestly the exact sort of content that SHOULD be used to train responsible models. But worth remembering that it’s very common on tumblr to think of all writing as, like, genre fiction, and there are other types of writing too.
Settlement shows AI companies can face consequences for pirated training data.
Authors revealed today that Anthropic agreed to pay $1.5 billion and destroy all copies of the books the AI company pirated to train its artificial intelligence models. In a press release provided to Ars, the authors confirmed that the settlement is "believed to be the largest publicly reported recovery in the history of US copyright litigation." Covering 500,000 works that Anthropic pirated for AI training, if a court approves the settlement, each author will receive $3,000 per work that Anthropic stole. "Depending on the number of claims submitted, the final figure per work could be higher," the press release noted.

AU where there's no system (or a decidedly less restrictive one) and Shen Yuan transmigrates into an OC rogue cultivator before the start of the novel, and decides he's gonna steal the protagonist before Luo Binghe even gets to Cang Qiong.
The logic is sound -- he'll keep Luo Binghe from experiencing neglect and abuse at Shen Qingqiu's hands, raise him away from the pressure of the sects and the likelihood that anyone else might find out about his heritage and try to harm him over it, keep him fully away from the Immortal Alliance Conference, and then Luo Binghe's course will change trajectory because he'll have no reason to want revenge against the world and no access to Xin Mo. Shen Yuan will be able to spare Luo Binghe some suffering and possibly survive in a world less subject to the harrowing whims of a half-mad tyrannical overlord. Win-win!
However, the tricky bit is that he's not sure exactly how far ahead of the novel he is, and also Airplane didn't specify where Luo Binghe grew up. This means that Luo Binghe could be any age younger than twelve and in any number of places along or near to the Luo river.
Shen Yuan decides he's going to approach this by pretending he is looking for the long-lost son of his sister, traveling through the likeliest areas, asking after abandoned children who might fit the protagonist's description. It's a long shot, he knows, and he's mostly relying on the existence of Narrative Destiny. But eventually he is directed by several people towards a particular city, which is not as close to the river as he'd have expected Luo Binghe to grow up, but then again he only knows that was where baby Binghe was found, not where the washerwoman who took him in ultimately lived.
It becomes clear to him, though, that he's been sent to the wrong target. But also why he's been sent astray is apparent in nearly the same breath, because among the slave children living in this area is a little boy who could be his much younger clone.

guys help i’m LOSING MY GODDAMN MIND over these fat tiger art scrolls

Gerenuk
i hate that they can move their limbs like that so much.
if i drew this and asked for critique on any art site, i know that every critique would tell me to go study more basic anatomy and lecture me about how joints dont work like that
Unfortunately, every picture of a gerenuk is like that.
They’re just incorrigibly fucked up and if you tried to draw them as they actually are, it’s a cinch you’d get heaps of people trying to redline that shit for you and telling you to “fix” it.

The Father Christmas letters of the Tolkien family
Over a span of 23 years in the early 20th Century, the children of JRR Tolkien were lucky enough to receive annual letters from Father Christmas, written in his recognisably chilly script and accompanied by vivid, richly-coloured illustrations.
Photograph: The Tolkien Estate Ltd 1976
Going far beyond the usual promises of treats for the nice and chastisement for the naughty, these letters introduced the Tolkien children to the ongoing saga of life at the North Pole. They tell of raids by present-thieving goblins, and the peril-fraught adventures of Santa’s polar bear companion.
As is appropriate for such delicate treasures, the letters have been seldom seen in public, but we’re pleased to offer our visitors a wonderful chance to savour them, colourful pictures and all. Not only is one of the letters on display in the Bodleian Libraries’ Treasury right now, the collection is set to feature in our major exhibition for summer 2018, Tolkien: Maker of Middle-earth.

Those looking for a little more background information (and who are old enough for such a revealing peek behind the curtain) will find new, lovely features on the letters in The Guardian and on Radio 4′s Today [skip to 1 hour and 44 minutes].
Both of those pieces feature plenty of input from the Bodleian Libraries’ Tolkien archivist, Catherine McIlwaine, for whom “The Christmas letters are probably my favourite things in the whole collection… so detailed and beautifully illustrated ”
Those keeping a close eye on the Bodleian Libraries’ social media will be hearing from Catherine again very soon…
Tolkien: Maker of Middle-earth opens at the Bodleian Libraries’ Weston Library on 1 June 2018 and runs until 28 October 2018.

Having a hard day? Turn up the sound and let Max lull you.
In case anyone else was worried about why this cat is looking so domestic, here’s the video description:
Max Lynx, the educational animal ambassador takes a moment to get some good scratchin’ before he sits down for his meal. He was born at a zoo in May 2011. He’s not completely domesticated but not wild either. He educates the public on the endangered Canada Lynx in hopes that people will be driven to conserve our environment and protect our wildlife.
Look at those paws! Also, he has his own cardboard box <3
Prayers to Venus:
I work at the Getty Villa, and as part of our summer Roman Holidays event, we have an altar to Venus set up, with blank tags so that people can leave prayers to her. I’m not sure if the museum expected the response we’ve gotten, but it’s been really lovely and touching to read all the prayers.
