Pride and Prejudice (2005) + The Mincing Mockingbirdās Guide to Troubled Birds
āMy cousin Helen, who is in her 90s now, was in the Warsaw ghetto during World War II. She and a bunch of the girls in the ghetto had to do sewing each day. And if you were found with a book, it was an automatic death penalty. She had gotten hold of a copy of āGone With the Windā, and she would take three or four hours out of her sleeping time each night to read. And then, during the hour or so when they were sewing the next day, she would tell them all the story. These girls were risking certain death for a story. And when she told me that story herself, it actually made what I do feel more important. Because giving people stories is not a luxury. Itās actually one of the things that you live and die for.ā āNeil Gaiman

I'm 27 and I Have No Introspective Video to Commemorate It
I used to go to Sentosa every year on my birthday.
I'd wake up early just to take the train all the way to Harbourfront, then walk across the boardwalk so I didn't need to pay 3 extra dollars just to get in.
It wasn't an old tradition, one that I might have done since I was a child. It was just something I decided to do one day when I was 17 or 18 - I don't remember the exact age. It probably started when I was 17, since I remember getting surprised by my friends when I turned 18.
I think maybe it's because it made me feel as if I was travelling overseas? It helped that at 17, I just got my first taste of freedom. School ran on a different timetable. I didn't need to be at the desk the whole day.
I was still pretty terrible at letting my parents know where I was, but at least at 17, they were starting to let go. Just a little.
To be honest, I don't really know what to write right now. I'd planned to write it on my birthday itself, but now a month has gone by, and I'm just reminiscing about how it felt to be young.
I guess I have always thought that by 27, I'd be married or something. Maybe even planning for children by now.
Instead I'm writing a stream of consciousness piece, just rambling to no end about how it's like to be older.
I don't know what it's like to be older.
I'm 27, I don't know what it feels like to be 67. I don't know what will happen 40 years later. I don't even know what will happen next year.
So to say that your life can be planned out, that's definitely a lie.
Not going to publish this, I think. I'm particular about what I publish 'cause I'm adamant about this website not being a blog.
Maybe I'll put it on my tumblr? That makes more sense.
I'm not sure what I'm trying to write about here... I guess as much as I've grown this past year, I've also realised more and more just how much I don't know. The futility of how life can turn out to be scares me.
brb listening to Taylor Swiftās album Iām already on track 6 12 more tracks to go
vegans who refuse to even eat backyard eggsā¦.why
people who think its unethical to eat chicken eggs are like people who think bees should keep all their honey. they literally produce more than they need and your unwillingness to even buy local means you are doing nothing to help them, support your small farmers you heathens
This is not true.
1) honeybees do not produce āextra honey.ā And beekeepers donāt take some of the honey, they take all of it.
2) chickens have been artificially selected from naturally producing eggs once a month to producing eggs every couple of days. Their bodies are not sustainable and the health complications of this rapid egg production kills chickens.
Hey idk who like. Lied to you about the way honey farms work, but could you stop spreading misinformation? Are you a beekeeper?
Because I am!
Beekeepers make sure hives are fed before there is pollen in the air, protected from predators and the elements, and have enough honey to sustain themselves. We donāt take all of it.
But overproduction of honey leads to stagnation in the hive. It puts stress on the queen to lay eggs, and when they inevitably fill up all their space with honey (instead of filling up the multiple empty, clean boxes of frames beekeepers might put on top of the main hive box), the queen can get so stressed she dies. If thereās a spike in the weather and the hive hasnāt prepared new queen brood, thatās it! The colony is dead. Because there wasnāt enough space for eggs and honey in the hive.
Beekeepers take excess honey. We are constantly monitoring the state of the hive, checking for parasites, analyzing the eggs for diseases, and making sure they are fed and healthy (usually with sugar water and pollen substitutes until they have made enough honey to sustain themselves in the early spring months). If a queen dies prematurely, we make every attempt to replace her to save the colony.
I know thereās an urge to patronize everyone who works in the farming industry, but try to understand the differences between small scale agriculture and industrial farming. There IS a difference. And stop spreading misinformation.
If youāre this passionate about ethical consumption, look into some of the ecofeminist research on non-hierarchal interspecies relationships (working on building animal-human relationships in a non exploitative way).
But yeah! Stop spreading misinformation! Please š
Also if I can harp on the chicken part?
Yea Chickens are some of the most abused animals on big factory farms and Iāll be the first to admit itās criminal and more needs to be done to regulate this.
Yes selective breeding over time has caused an increase in the ammount of eggs produced by chickens and factory farms have some messed up practices to get more eggs from them including forced moutling.
THIS IS WHY YOU SUPPORT LOCAL FARMERS AND THEIR EGGS
Many people take to raising their own hens because of Americaās immoral treatment of hens in factory farms like youāre not helping the poor chicks by starving these farmers financially youāre just hurting the one people trying to change things and making the OPTION of cage free organic cruelty free eggs even harder to find
Yeah, as someone who like⦠lives on a chicken and duck farm⦠Coops help keep wild animals out but birds are kinda dumb. And chickens literally do not need to keep the unfertilized eggs!Ā
Most chickens will sit on unfertilized eggs until they can tell if they are or not⦠By the smell of rotting egg. Yeah, ew. Farmers can hold that bitch to the flashlight and tell if thereās a baby in there! They know! The eggs are not being abused!
Also - once a month? Like thousands of years ago maybe? Because Grandpa had chickens he literally let just roam around his farm and built coops and scattered corn for them and I helped collect the eggs, and believe me, those chickens each laid more than once a month.
As a beekeeperā¦what the fuck? No we donāt take all the honey. That would be downright ridiculous.Ā
Reblogging for the bee facts. Love me some bees. ššššššššššššššššš
And chicken facts!
Additionally, cows need milked or their offers will get heavy and painful. And sheep need sheared or theyāll overheat and maggots can home in the wool n eat em alive! Shearing does NOT hurt sheep. Itās literally just like getting a haircut or shaving your legs.
@keyhollow
I literally watched a sheep faint at a sheep show once. Like. Sheep need to be sheared or they WILL die. It doesnāt bother the sheep. And having grown up on a dairy farm, the cows are literally EAGER to get milked. Their internal clock is better than your own. They KNOW. Sure, maybe we shouldnāt have bred these animals to this point, but itās WAY too late for that. Now, itās our responsibility to care for them. What are you going to do if you make everyone go vegan, just let them suffer and die out in the wild? Yeah, I can tell youāre really into animals.
And we didnāt really breed them to this point, a few of our ancestors did. We can point fingers now and ignore these animals, but that wonāt help anyone, especially not these animals. Your best bet to help them is to support small farms.
the switch from āa girl worth fighting forā to coming upon the decimated village in mulan is THE MOST kick-in-the-teeth mood change IN ALL OF CINEMA
That scene shift did more for our generationās understanding of the horror of war in ten seconds than Game of Thrones did in eight seasons, and it did it without showing us a single dead body.Ā
OKAY BUT HOLD ON THOUGH.
Iāve spent the past⦠five? Letās say five - the past five years analyzing the structure of Disney Musicals as part of the process to write my own/a parody of them, and the thing is that all the modern ones have roughly the same number of songs - except Mulan.
Mulan has about half, because after AGWFF ends with that unresolved final phrase, there are no more songs until the end credits, which isnāt even sung in-universe.
Mulan wasnāt even the REALM of fucking around - when they arrive at that village, when the true horrors of war are brought into the story, not only does it interrupt THAT song, it breaks the entire fucking mold - the movieās damn genre changes; it is no longer a musical.
And the Huns represent this from the start - Jafar and Hades are notable for not having proper villain songs, but Jafar does get his Prince Ali refrain and Hades and his plan get sung ABOUT by the muses. No scene with the Huns has any singing, they are mentioned once in song (the second line of Man, natch), and they of all Disney Villains are probably the most serious - no jokes, no witty asides, no sassy delivery of dry humor. The Huns are an invading army who plan to straight up kill a fuckton of people, including children, and AGWFFās sudden end is the moment when our happy go lucky MUSICAL protagonists finally come in contact with them and their work directly - and it breaks them. Because shit like the Huns cannot exist in happy go lucky musical world. They just exist in our world. The real world. And you canāt sing your problems away here.
The end of A Girl Worth Fighting For is a brilliant use of metanarrative sensibilities to convey a message. It is utterly perfect.

Okay friend, Iām going to give you the run down. Are you sitting comfortably?Ā

THEYāRE ASSUMING CRASH POSITIONS
THIS IS GOING TO BE AN OUTING OF STUPIDITY TO THE ENTIRE WORLD
NEWS CREWS ARE GATHERING ā- AGAIN FOR NO OTHER REASON THAN THE FANS THINK SOMETHING IS GOING TO HAPPEN WITH ABSOLUTELY NO EVIDENCE TO SUPPORT THIS THESIS
EVERYONE ON TUMBLR IS DISTRESSED
DISMAYED
āTHE WORLD WILL KNOW THAT WEāRE INSANE!!ā THEY CRY, THEIR SELF-AWARENESS THEIR LAST REDEEMING FEATURE
AND THEN
WHEN ALL HOPE IS LOST
TAYLOR āIāM POTENTIALLY THE ONLY PERSON MORE BATSHIT CRAZY THAN MY FANSā SWIFT GETS HER CLOWN ASS ON INSTAGRAM

THEY TURNED UP IN DROVESĀ BECAUSE THEY ALL DESPERATELY NEED TO GET A JOB
AND THEN - 6PM GMT - THIS ANGEL/DEVIL WOMAN TURNS UP AT THE MURAL AND TAKES WHAT SEEMS LIKE A SELFIE WITH LITERALLY ABSOLUTELY EVERYONE WHOāS THERE - WHICH BY THE WAY, IS ABOUT 500 PEOPLE AT THIS POINT
AND SAYS! NOTHING ABOUT THE ALBUM! NOTHING ABOUT THE SINGLE! NOTHING ABOUT ANYTHING!
SHE JUST SHOWS UP AND SAYS HEY (it was enchanting to meet you)Ā
OUTSTANDING
LITERALLY OUTSTANDINGĀ
WHO KNEW SUCH CLOWNERY AND TOMFOOLERY WAS POSSIBLE?

After this, the fandom can all become Sherlock.
Womenās History Month Spotlight: Mitu Khandaker
Mitu Khandaker is living the dream. She had a hobby and turned it into a career where she can make meaningful change. As a game designer, she holds a PhD on the aesthetics of interactivity in videogames and most recently founded a new studio, Glow Up Games. Her and her team are motivated to tell stories through mobile games and AI. If youāre into gaming, youāll want to read our interview with her below.
Tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got into the gaming industry.
Iām a game designer, programmer, scholar, and entrepreneur. Iām a professor at NYU Game Center and CEO and Co-Founder of new studio, Glow Up Games. I have a PhD in the aesthetics of interactivity and designing for virtual reality, and I do consulting across a range of creative and technical projects across games, AI, and immersive storytelling
I think that I have the typical story [after] I found out that creating games was an actual job. That actually happened thanks to an episode of my fave TV show when I was 13, The X-Files, which featured a storyline featuring a female āentertainment software developerāāāwho, incidentally, happened to be a woman! Since then, I knew I wanted to do that, but the route I took was also typically a little unusual and eclectic. I studied Computer Engineering to Masters level at university (my other aspiration was to build cool robots), and for my final project, I designed a videogame and controller which used stress levels as input. Then I was offered the chance to do a PhD in game design and creative technologies at the University of Portsmouth, and while I was doing that, I was building all kinds of games and projectsāfrom a location-based games startup I worked on briefly, to my first indie hit, Redshirt, which sparked my interest in social simulation and AI.
I was then part of the founding team of a game AI tools company called Spirit AI, until more recently, when I left to start a new studio, Glow Up Games. [Now I] focus on telling beautifully crafted systemic stories through games, mobile, AI, and emerging tech, and, particularly, building games for a diverse and underrepresented audience, by a diverse and underrepresented and underestimated team.
Games are such an interactive medium. How do you think game developers and their teams can create a positive, inclusive shared experience?
Games are indeed interactive, but also, theyāre always about telling stories, whether through implicit systems or more explicitly. As always, I think that the key to telling better stories lies in tapping into the wider wealth of human experience. That means building more inclusive and diverse teams.
How do you see gender disparity occurring in the gaming industry? How can we change the male-dominated narrative?
Women have always been in games, but they perhaps havenāt been afforded the same platforms as our male counterparts. We need to shout about the accomplishments of women throughout gaming history, for one thing. Another is to create cultures within gaming companies where, as women and minorities, weāre truly included. For me, as a woman of color, that means building our own structuresāone of my missions with Glow Up Games!
What advice would you give to aspiring women who are just starting out or wanting to join the industry?
Find mentors in people who are women or non-binary. Find peers, allies, and find people who will remind you that youāre not alone in this. I canāt underline strongly enough the value of having a good network of support.
Thanks for the interview, Mitu!
Ā Tumblr, like what you see? Stay tuned to @gaming all month long for more interviews with women in the gaming industry.Ā
Step into the daylight and let it go.
Tell me this whole thing wasnāt a rebranding and a countdown to new music.
I may love Taylorās songs but the changing of tunes before the birth of a new album sounds the sweetest.
Iām counting down right with everyone else.
