âYou can use the internet to order stuff!â She excitedly told Natalie, amazed she clearly hadnât heard of this amazing invention. âI get shiny things from there sometimes for outfits. You use a computer, and itâs kinda likeâŚâ Mei looked up, tongue in cheek as she tried to think of a good description. âLike everything ever is just there in the screen, and you just say you want it, then it turns up!â
She felt slightly guilty as Natalie brought the chain away from her neck. âWell, itâs okay. I stole it after all.â She rifled through a nearby stack and came out a small emerald on a loop. âHere.â Mei passed it over and tapped her own neck. âPut it on the chain, and itâll be pretty but not too bad, if that isnât your thing.â
Mei laughed at the idea of having to give money for any of these things. As far as she was concerned, looking as good as she did was payment enough for the jewels she took. âWell, if you wanna get started, just ask me for some tips. Iâll get you taking stuff in no time!â
That hadnât occurred to Natalie. âThatâs a great idea!â She grinned widely. âI used to order things from online sometimes when I was alive, but I guess I just thought ... Iâm not used to getting mail here,â she laughed. She made a mental note to order some stamps and ink the next time she got the chance. Did she even know the address of the Spookshow? Her scope of reference had become rather limited since she was traped here.
Eager to please, Natalie took the emerald from her. âItâs beautiful,â she said. âThank you!â She slipped it on the chain and watched the light glint off of it, glad to have a memento from her new friend. âIâll wear it all the time,â she promised. It would be a nice change from her usual routine. She clasped the necklace around her neck with a smile.
She snorted a little laughter at the other womanâs offer, trying to imagine herself actually stealing from the guests. She thought that sheâd feel too bad doing it -- what if that jewel was something precious to them? She supposed they wouldnât have forgotten it, if it was. âIâll keep that in mind,â was all she said.
trapped.
She had been on the other end of this situation, but she had never seen what it was like for other people. Isabellaâs own circumstances were so much different than Natalieâs. Mr. Mammon came to her just when Isabella was ready to end it all. After she had killed the last of her family and she was ready to let the fire she had set to the estate consumer her. After all, she had nothing left. But he appeared before her in the midst of that fire and offered her a second chance. In some twisted way, the demon was her savior. But for Natalie, he was her captor and he was threatening her into servitude.Â
Isabella watched in silence as Mr. Mammon, grasped the ghost girlâs hand. The second that their hands touched, a cool light seemed to emanate from Natalieâs hand and slowly shift until it had all but consumed the demonâs. Isabella remembered this process very well, mostly because she had expected it to be painful, but she felt nothing at all in the end. She was sure that it was the same for Natalie. The light travelled from one hand to the other, lingered in Mammonâs gnarled, sinewy hands and then faded leaving only the light of the binding circle to illuminate the area.Â
He then turned to Isabella. âIsabella, dear. You may release her now.â And like the obedient little employee she was, she obeyed. With a flick of her wrist, the intricate circle vanished, along with itâs anchor points. âMs. Bartlet, welcome to the Spookshow Amusement Park.â he smiled at his newest employee before he turned his back on her and Isabella âMs. Sandoval will take you the employee grounds. You can rest for the night in your new apartment and tomorrow you will receive further instructions on what you will be doing while working her at the park.â And with that, the demon suddenly vanished as abruptly as he came. Now that he was finally gone, Isabella found the strength to actually move and she took a few steps towards Natalie.Â
âI⌠Iâm sorry I had to do thatâŚâ she apologized quietly.Â
Natalie winced out of instinct when the transaction happened, but she didnât feel anything. Just a strange sense of dread that she was giving away something that she couldnât replace. But when it was over, she was still here. She still existed. And that was more than she could have asked for, just a few minutes ago. The demon gave her and the witch some instruction before turning on his heel and disappearing, almost into thin air. She was free.
Except she wasnât really free. She still wasnât allowed to leave the park, but she was so relieved to be out of the circle, to still be on Earth, that she couldnât muster up the disappointment she was supposed to feel. She felt more here than she had in the year since she died, more solid, more present. It was a strange sort of feeling.
As the other woman approached her, she couldnât help but shy away. Maybe her apology was genuine -- and Natalie was inclined to believe that it was, since she wasnât the type to hold grudges. But she was powerful, and she was frightening. She could wipe Natalie off the face of the planet if she so chose.
âItâs okay,â she said quietly, through lips that felt numb. It didnât feel okay between them at all, but she didnât want to say so. âBut I just want to rest, now.â

âJournal?â Sheâd never heard of that, but Mei loved magazines, so it sounded funâŚalthough she wasnât sure she could ever cut hers up. âThat sounds coolâŚdo you cut out people you like or outfits?â Maybe Natalie could join her and Derekâs fashionable clique! Mei would have to inspect the fashions first though, of course.
She raised her eyebrows when Natalie picked up the chain, surprised. âUmâŚsure, but donât you want something nicer?â She didnât even remember getting the chain, but it had probably once been connected to a jewel of some kind for her to bother picking it up.
Maybe Natalie had bad tasteâŚobviously good taste was as sparkly as colourful as possible. Picking up a large ruby, she turned it over in her hands.
âI guess you like simple stuffâŚI like everything to be big and loud.â She grinned a bit to her self as she spoke and magically projected a pattern into the ruby, the jewel appearing to burn from within.
Natalie shrugged. âBoth! Whatever catches my eye, really. Or goes with the paints I found. Iâd like to use stamps and stuff, but itâs harder to find those and I canât leave the park.â It wasnât the most ideal situation, but Natalie didnât think it was all that bad. She was used to being cooped up in one place, and this had some advantages.
Natalie paused in putting the chain around her neck. âYou donât think this is nice?â She pulled it out and inspected it again. True, it didnât glitter quite as brightly as some of the other things in Meiâs collection, but that didnât make it bad.
But she wanted Mei to like her, so she wasnât going to argue. She drifted over to where the other was, looking down at the ruby in admiration. âWell, what do you think I should take?â She smiled a bit shyly. âI donât have a lot of experience with this. We didnât have a lot of extra money for jewelry back when I was alive.â
Most of their extra money went to medications and doctorâs visits, unfortunately. And she probably wouldnât have seen much of a point in spending it on jewelry, even if she could. When would she have had an occasion to wear it?
trapped.
Isabella waited for the girlâs answer with bated breath. This was the first time she had seen anyone offered a deal by Mr. Mammon and to be completely honest, Isabella was waiting for the girl to just up and say âyes.â The terms of the deal were simple after all. Either come work for him and get some form of her life back since she seemed to be in hiding for an entire year⌠or die. Yes, there was apart of her that had to admit that the prospect of giving your soul over to a demon was terrifying, but Isabella had been there for quite some and she remained the same. She didnât turn into a member of the undead, Mammon didnât take her free will away and use her like a puppet. She was fine.
Isabella was hoping and praying that the girl would say âyesâ because even though Isabella was capable of cold blooded murder, she didnât want to end everything for this girl. So when the girl agreed to the deal, Isabella let out an audible sigh of relief. As she let out her breath, she heard Mr. Mammon chuckle.
âExcellent.â he grinned. That was when he finally took a step forward and inside the circle. Isabellaâs shoulders tensed for a moment, half expecting him to react to the magic binding she had put in place, but Mr. Mammon remained unperturbed. Instead he moved with ease towards Natalie in the middle of the circle, his thin lips quirking upwards as he smiled at her. He extended a gaunt hand towards her, waiting for her to take it so the deal would be set in stone and her soul would be his. âItâs a deal then.â
Natalie looked at the outstretched hand. Even though she had already agreed, she still didnât take it right away. She couldnât stop staring at those pale, thin fingers, haggard and fragile-looking. But even without touching them, she knew they wouldnât feel fragile. Nothing about this man felt fragile, despite his appearance. The thought of touching his skin made the walls of her stomach crawl uncomfortably, an automatic response from a time when she had such a thing.
She glanced over to the witch. Even her magic could not hold this man. Even she was afraid of him, and she was not afraid of Natalie at all. It was strange -- she did not know that Natalie would not be dangerous. Maybe she was simply too powerful for most things to frighten her. Considering how easily she had bound Natalie to this spot, she was not surprised at all.
She turned back to Mammon, trying and failing not to tremble. It felt like weights were tied to her wrists as she lifted her hand, stifled by the utter finality of what she was about to do. But it wasnât half as final as what would happen to her if she didnât. She grasped the manâs hand, trying not to wince at the feel of his skin. âItâs a deal.â
closing time.
âWellâŚI donât really have much to do!â She laughed, bopping around to the beat of her music as she floated in mid air. âMostly I just dance and count my stuff here and sometimes I practice illusions.â Mei had always been easily pleased, and had entertained herself with very little activity in her room for years.
She watched slightly impressed as Natalie made her legs intangible. It was always kind of cool to see humans doing magic â it made them a little more special. She guessed being dead already made Natalie special, but there were aÂ
How long had she been working here? Mei paused and frowned for a moment, struggling to remember. âAboutâŚuhâŚ10âŚyearsâŚmaybe?â She tapped her finger to her chin, not sure anymore. It had all just turned into a blur of glitter and boredom. âI dunno. I only started collecting a couple years ago, thoughâŚWhat about you? How long have you been here?âÂ
âThat makes sense!â Natalie guessed she didnât have much to do a lot of the time, either. If it were up to her, sheâd spend all of her time with people as lovely as Mei, but sometimes that just wasnât feasible. âIf I have time to myself, I like to journal. Lots of people throw away magazines and stuff, and I like to cut out the pictures to add to my notebook. And I can use paint and stuff too, when I get my hands on it.â She couldnât leave the park, of course, but sometimes she came across these things.
She looked over her shoulder at Mei as they discussed how long she had been working here. âAround three years,â she said. She was curious how someone like Mei had gotten into the Spookshow, but she knew that a lot of people were sensitive about it. Mei didnât seem like the type, but she still didnât want to pry.
Her eyes were drawn to a simple golden chain (although she didnât know enough about jewelry to be able to tell if it was real or fake). âHow pretty,â she said. It wasnât particularly flashy, but Natalie wasnât the type for flashy things. âMay I have this? Or is this one special?â She offered a small, shy smile. It felt a little weird to be asking for something, but the other had offered.
trapped.
Isabella couldnât quite describe the terror that ripped through her when Mr. Mammon proposed that she destroy the ghost named Natalie right then and there. Isabella was under not under the delusional that she was a completely good person. In fact, if most people in the park knew what she was capable of and knew of the blood staining her hands some would probably call her a monster. Isabella even called herself a monster more times than she could count.Â
However, despite that, she didnât want to get rid of the ghost girl. The poor girl was terrified by a shadow of a doubt. The moment that Isabella bound her to the circle, she could feel something about the ghost girl. The reason why most ghosts were trapped in this earthly realm was because they felt the had unfinished business of some traumatic experience bound them to the place. For the ghost Natalie⌠it was both. Whatâs more⌠she was bound the entire park. It had been an entire year and if she could leave, she probably would have (Isabella guessed). But she didnât. Probably because she couldnât. And Isabella didnât want to get rid of her either.
However, there was one big problem. She was standing next to the demon that held her soul⌠She would probably have to. He would probably make her do it himself, or if she disobeyed him right to his face maybe there was a chance that he would just eliminate her right then and there along with Natalie. In all honesty, Isabella was scrambling as to what she should do before Mammon offered her an alternative.
Threaten them and appeal to them.
It wasnât the tactic he had used on her to convince her to come here, but Isabella had heard from plenty of employees that they didnât really have much other choice. She turned her head and saw a smirk pull on the cornerâs of Mammonâs mouth. âYouâll do anything? Now those are words I like to hear,â he chuckled. âYou see Ms. Bartlet, Iâm in a generous mood tonight so youâre in luck. Instead of killing you right here and now, you could work for me. Right here. In this very park. Youâll work one of the attractions during the day and youâll have a place to call your own. It will be very similar to what you have been doing now only⌠you wonât have to hide from anyone and youâll actually have a purpose beyond sneaking around. All you have to do is give me your soul.â As the words left his lips a cruel, cat like smile curled the sides of his mouth upward. âItâs either that or I could get rid of you right here and right now.â He paused as if to let the weight of his words truly sink in. âSo, what will it be?â
It seemed too good to be true. A chance to be more than the shadow of a girl, the chance to do and to act. It should have been something that she jumped upon without question, something that she took as a gift instead of an ultimatum. She never really got the chance to work when she was growing up, being too focused on her health. She had often envied the little summer jobs her friends picked up. Now she was being given a chance to work one of those jobs, was being given the chance to talk and interact with people.
And, yet, she hesitated. Natalie Bartlet did not not have a lot to her name. She did not have a home. She did not have money or food or anything like that. No companions, not even a pet. The clothes on her back were made from memory more than fabric. All she really had to her name was her soul. And that was the very thing she was being asked to sign away. This man (who was not truly a man, she knew) frightened her. What would he do with her very last possession?
And, yet, she knew the alternative. She didnât have a choice. âI accept,â she said through numb lips. She gave a quick glance to the witch who had trapped her in this position. She would give anything to be out of this circle, away from the woman and man who frightened her so much.
closing time.
She found herself disappointed that Natalie didnât have stories about everyoneâs secret rooms, but maybe in time she could convince her to give it a go. âIâd go spy on someone right away if I could do that! Itâs the fun thing to do.â
Mei reached her door and opened it wide, revealing inside a room that may have once had pink walls, but so covered were the walls in beads and pictures and fabrics you couldnât tell anymore. The floor, crowded with piles of trinkets, had a sort of makeshift corridor in it, leading from the front door to the bathroom and kitchen.
She floated in, holding out her arms. âTa-da! This is everything.â An old looking stereo, covered haphazardly in some kind of glitter, played a pop song in the background.
âYou can have something nice if you want! Thereâs basically a bit of everythingâŚâ She mumbled the last part almost to herself as she looked over the collection of gold and jewels, some fake and some real (but no silver, of course.)
Natalie laughed off the otherâs comment, figuring she was probably just kidding. Probably. It was mean to sneak into peopleâs rooms, but then again, taking forgotten objects wasnât exactly the nicest thing to do. Well, Mei seemed nice to her, and that was the important thing.
Her thoughts were easily swept away as she entered the other girlâs room. âWhoa! You live here?â She looked around wildly, trying to imagine being constantly surrounded by all of this. Every time she thought she had her mind wrapped around it, a new thing grabbed her attention.
She couldnât help but laugh. âHow do you get anything done? I think all Iâd ever want to do is look around.â Which was exactly what she did, stepping silently among the glittering jewels and trinkets. At the otherâs offer, she smiled. âThank you! Iâll keep my eye out for something I like ... And I wonât disturb anything, I promise.â
She turned intangible from the waist down to give herself a bit more freedom to walk around without messing up the piles of stuff. âHow long have you been working here?â There was so much stuff, she could only imagine that Mei had been here for awhile.

⢠Do they have a favorite item they treasure? If so what is it?
Whichever notebook sheâs decorating and writing in at the moment certainly counts.
Who are your favourite people here? Who are your least?
âUh, gosh, I donât know if I want to rank people, you know? But ... Liam and I are close. And uh ... Isabella kind of scares me, but I wouldnât say sheâs my least favorite person or anything.â
Do you have any friends here at the park?
âSure! Liam is definitely a friend. And I think Mei and I are getting to be friends, too! Iâd love to meet more people, though.â
closing time.
Mei looked at herself in the shiny wall of the elevator, thinking over Natalieâs question. Why had she picked this form? When sheâd first got here, sheâd spent a day pouring over human magazines, looking over all of the different models and trying to decide which one she wanted to emulate.Â
âI looked at lots of faces and I just liked this one the best!â She smiled a bit. âBut over the years I changed some of it. Like my eye colour and my hair and stuff.â For a while sheâd been a blonde, but had decided it just didnât suit her. Maybe in a few years sheâd change her face completely, or grow a few inches taller, or get a new nose. For now, this form seemed to make people like her and she looked good with jewels, so it worked out.
As they reached her floor and she began to fly towards her room, Mei looked back at Natalie. âOkay, Ghost question! Can you fly through walls and stuff if you wanted to? âCos I really wanna know what some peoples apartments look like. Thereâs some weird people here.â
It was strange to Natalie, to think that someone could just change how they looked so easily. Then again, she couldnât even wipe the smudge of dirt off the tip of her converse -- so she was an extreme case, maybe. If she could change anything about her appearance, would she? Well, she had been toying with the idea of cutting her hair short before she died, so maybe sheâd do that.
âWell, I think it suits you!â She smiled, grasping lightly at the elevator railing as it began to move. Was this what it felt like for Mei to fly? Probably not even close, but it was something to think about. She didnât think any ghosts had the power to fly, but there were other things. Besides, the Spookshow had plenty of roller coasters if you were into that kind of thing! Now that she could actually ride them, she liked to as often as she could.
She exited the elevator behind Mei, laughing nervously at her question. âI can go through walls! When I turn invisible, I also turn intangible, so, like, I can go through things and things go through me.â She looked awkwardly to her feet. âIâve never used it to spy on people, though.â
trapped.
âI told you to tell me your name. Not for you to beg.â Mammon responded coldly as his continued to stride alongside the outside of the circle like a vulture. Isabella silently wondered why he didnât step inside the circle, it wasnât as if the circle could affect him since it was made for ghosts and not demons. And while she wouldnât actually attempt it, there were some times when Isabella wondered if she would be able to withstand a battle against the demon. She held an enormous amount of power inside of her and knew a great deal of powerful spells, after all. But it was a thought she was afraid to entertain for very long. He held her soul after all.Â
There was a period of silence that felt like it stretched on for an eternity before the demon spoke again. âNatalie BartletâŚâ he drawled. âAh, you were that girl that Rowland, Liam, and Finn ran into about a year ago. You caused me quite a bit of trouble with all the covering up I had to do.â Isabellaâs eyes widened because she had heard about what had happened that night and what happened to Rowland afterwards. âWhile I do regret what happened to you. You were trespassing on private property after hours.â he paused and stopped walking, but continued to look at the ghost girl before him. âIt seems that not much has changed from that nightâŚâ his tone was quiet, but it was almost as if he was mocking her.
âNow the question remains⌠What on earth shall I do with you now? I suppose I could get rid of you or⌠better yet, since Isabella is the one that has you under her sway, I could ask her to get rid of you for meâŚâ
Isabellaâs eyes widened, in horror. She meant to only capture the ghost, not to get rid of her. âSir.. I donât-â Isabella spoke up suddenly, finally finding her voice again before she was cut off again.
âOr⌠perhaps I can show you some mercy and offer you a proposition⌠Are you interested in hearing it?â
Natalie flinched at the coldness in his tone. âIâm sorry,â she said quickly. The silence that stretched out was unbearable. She had to press her lips tightly together to keep herself from babbling out pleas for her life, assurances that she meant no harm, prayers and oaths and whatever she could think of to get this man on her side. He made it clear that he didnât want to speak unless spoken to, and she had no intention of disobeying her. Still, the silence seemed to have almost a physical weight, pushing against her chest in that horribly familiar way that she hadnât felt since her heart stopped beating for good.
Finally, he spoke. The relief from the tension was only momentary, given the nature of his words. âI didnât mean to cause you any trouble,â she assured him. âAnd I donât hold what happened against you. It was -- It was totally, completely my fault, I just ...â She trailed off. This man didnât care about her desire to impress people, the near desperation that had driven her to the park in the first place. She had just wanted to seem worthy to her friends, she wanted to be asked out because they thought she was cool, and not just because they felt sorry for her. But what did any of that matter now?
It seems that not much has changed from that night ... The words stung dully. So much had changed. She was dead. She couldnât see her friends or her parents ever again. But she also never had to worry about staying in or being sick again. She had faced the ultimate fear -- death -- and came out on the other side. But none of that mattered to the man in front of her, of course. As far as he was concerned, she was still just a trespasser. And like he had taken care of her then, he would take care of her now.
âN-No!â She stammered out, her terror unbearable. She stumbled to the back edge of the circle, slamming hard into the barrier, the weight of it feeling strange after a year of not being confined by walls.
But then there was a chance. A way out. She clung to it like a life preserver. âIâll do anything!â She swore.

closing time.
âYou can ask me anything about fae!â Offered Mei, having to float down a little to get into the door of the Employee Housing building, but still bobbing slightly. âMuch better than asking any of the other fae here, theyâre boring.â She made a face upwards towards the other apartments.
She posed jokingly at the comments about looks. âMm. I can change how I look if I want, though, but this is alright for now. For a human form, anyway.â She had spent some years as a disguised forest nymph, some as a bird. They had all been gorgeous, of course.
âYay! Come on, then.â Mei flitted to the elevator. Normally she would fly up the stairs, but she wasnât sure if Natalie would like that. As she waited for the clunky doors to start closing, she shrugged and admitted: âI collect stuff from people here, so itâs not allâŚmine, I guess. But it is now.â
âThatâs so cool! You can ask me about anything ghost, too. I mean, Iâve only been a ghost for a few years, really, but still.â She definitely didnât Meiâs decades of experience, but she still knew about plenty of ghost-related things. After all, she had done her haunting before finally being bound to the park. She thought about saying something when Mei said the other fae were boring, but she kept it to herself. She didnât want to lose her new friend.
As the other said she could change her appearance, Natalieâs eyes widened. âReally? Thatâs cool! Iâm pretty much stuck like this.â She was even stuck in the clothes she died in, although it was one of her favorite outfits, since she wanted to impress her friends. âWhat made you choose that exact appearance? I mean, itâs really pretty, but you know. The specifics?â
She followed the other to the elevator as quickly as she could, wishing she could move that easily. âWell, if they left it, itâs pretty much fair game, right?â She assured the other quickly. âI mean, thatâs how I see it.â She didnât know if she did, really -- she always turned forgotten things over to lost and found, personally -- but she wasnât going to judge. Friends didnât judge friends.
Well shit. An actual emergency. Shouting at her was entirely regrettable and unprofessional. She softened her look and made sure not to panic or stress the other out any further. âOkay. Itâs alright. I apologize.â Maggie took out her walkie talkie and tried to get a hold of Koa. âKim to Koa, are you there?â There was silence. âDo you read?â More silence. She switched the station, âMaggie to Liam, do you read?â Again.Â
âIf you mean about mechanics, no. I know little to nothing. Or about the whereabouts of the mechanic? I donât know.â Perhaps there was just an error in the transmission, maybe something hysterically wrong was going on otherwise, maybe for some god awful reason they were all on break at once. Whatever it was she didnât really care, she was scoffing at the lack of professionalism in the situation. She would try to fix it herself if she had to. âDid it just stop working? Did you try resetting it? Maybe itâs just a small glitch in the system.â
Natalie was glad that the other apologized and quickly went to trying to help. Whatever she had done to annoy the other hadnât been very serious, evidently. Probably didnât have anything to do with her at all, although she still felt pretty responsible for it. She watched as the other tried to get ahold of Koa and then Liam with no success. âLiam is usually so reliable,â Natalie said softly. She didnât know Koa that well, since Liam was always quick to take care of Natalieâs ride issues personally. âI hope heâs alright.â She knew he was fine -- there was probably a big issue at another ride that needed both Liam and Koa to fix -- but she cared about Liam and she worried. He was still human, so fragile. And he wasnât old, but he wasnât young, either.
As the other suggested resetting it, Natalie shifted her weight awkwardly. âIâm sort of afraid to try anything. It might mess it up worse.â She didnât like to admit it -- she probably sounded like an incompetent child, and this woman seemed so sure of herself. âItâs just -- Liam usually fixes things so quickly. Iâve never had to worry about it before ...â It was a weak justification, and she forced herself to stop talking before she said something even more stupid.
