love (derogatory)
foolish one / cruel summer / you're on your own, kid / all too well (10 minute version) / august / say don't go
It was another windy night at the eras tour
omg reading your wcs/dbm thing and it JUST clicked that she's saying halo hiding my obsession like this good girl exterior is disguising my inner desires/obsession w you omg
YES!!! one of my fave lines in all of reputation for that reason. and the way the halo connects with falling from grace connects with "you know i'm not a bad girl but i do bad things with you" in so it goes and "he looks up grinning like a devil" and and and
her use of religious imagery is so so fascinating. thereās something about how religion and love and sex are so tied up in her mind i wanna study it further, particularly that it went from offhand christian girlie mentions of god and prayers (āasking god if he could play it againā and āgod smiles on my little brotherā) then went pretty silent except for relations to innocent, early love, like "this is me praying that this was the very first page not where the story line endsā or āthis is a state of grace, this is the worthwhile fightā and āright there where we stood was holy ground.ā
then it comes back with reputation as rae discussed above, and comes back in hot on reputation but especially lover, with an entire song relating sex to keep love alive with a long-term partner, āreligionās in your lips, the alter is my hips, even if itās a false god, weād still worship this loveā and saying ādesperate people find faith so now i pray to jesus too.ā and i also think that the use of āgoddamnā in ivy is interesting. āoh, goddamn, my pain fits in the palm of your freezing hand // yeah, itās a fire, itās the goddamn fight of my life, and you started it // now iām covered in you // iād meet you where the spirit meets the bones in a faith-forgotten landā (relating right back to donāt blame me and āi once was poison ivy but now iām your daisyā and sheāll be using for the rest of her life.)
then of course um. all of wouldāve, couldāve, shouldāve: āstained glass windows in my mind, i regret you all the time // i wouldāve stayed on my knees and i damn sure never wouldāve danced with the devil at 19 // but the godās honest truth is that the pain was heavenā and then back to āno rules in breakable heavenā and āif you aim at the devil, donāt missā and and and

FRIENDS in COLOURS Chandler Bing
Diane Warren opens up about co-writing '1989 (Taylor's Verison)' vault track 'Say Don't Go' with Taylor Swift nearly 10 years ago.
The legendary songwriter reflects on co-writing with Swift and demoing the track on New Year's Day 2014: "Everybody's on vacation, but she showed up"
When Taylor Swift dropped 1989 in 2014, Diane Warren wondered why the song they wrote together, āSay Donāt Go,ā didnāt make it on the LPās tracklist. So when the famed songwriter heard from her lawyer that Swift would finally release it nearly 10 years later, she was surprised ā and more than ready.
āEverything has its time, you know? It took a while to see the light of day, but Iām glad it finally did,ā Warren tells Rolling Stone. āIt was worth the wait.ā
Warren, who typically writes on her own, says the two of them āsat down and wrote the song,ā which was released Friday as one of 1989 (Taylorās Version)ās vault tracks, āfrom scratchā during the last few days of 2013. She remembers being impressed with how specific Swift was with her lyricism and how considerate she was about how her fans might receive it.
āShe was very particular about how she said certain things. It was a really interesting experience. She gets her audience,ā Warren says. āSheās deeply aware of how her fans want to hear something. I canāt explain it, but thatās probably why sheās the biggest fucking star in the world.ā
Several days after writing the song together, they got into Warrenās office to record a demo, where Swift played it on her acoustic guitar. āWe demoed it on New Yearās Day. And Iām a workaholic, and thatās fine for me,ā she says. āBut I remember being impressed that she did, too. Everybodyās on vacation, but she showed up.ā
āI was curious what they would do with the record,ā she adds. āAnd I assume itās Jack Antonoff who produced the shit out of the song.ā
Warren says she was emailed the song just a few hours before it was released on Friday while at dinner with friends. She says she went outside to listen to the song. āI said, āOh my god, this is fucking awesome,'ā she says. āIt was such a surprise to me that the record version was as good as it was. You know what? I hope they release this as a single because I think itās a fucking hit.ā
Her favorite part of the song? When Swift goes up an octave in the trackās second verse. She also says āSay Donāt Goā was released with the same lyrics they wrote nine years ago: āIt still stands. Itās timeless.ā
Warren attended The Eras Tour earlier this year and sat alongside Swiftās parents to watch the show. She says she had ānever seen anything likeā the crowd at her concert. āWhen I first worked with Taylor to where she is now, itās so crazy. Sheās probably the most popular person on the planet. Itās like, wow,ā she says. āTaylor Swift could be a cult leader if she wanted to!ā
And after the experience, Warren says sheād be open to working with Swift again. āThe one we did is pretty good, so if sheās down, Iād be down. That would be awesome.ā
I love how some people are commenting "Tjey aren't dating. They are just having a good time seeing what's going on."
That's the definition of dating people. Dating does not mean exclusive, although personally I was a one at a time girl regardless of dating status. And, I personally think Travis and Taylor are going to feel this out to decide if has legs without introducing another potential partner in the mix.
This. This. This. What do they think dating means?!?! This is dating. Why are people struggling with trying to define it differently. Just call it what it isā¦they are dating. It seems very simple and straightforward to me.
I've noticed that younger millennials and gen z have a different connotation with the word "dating" than older generations do. To them, "dating" = we are an official, exclusive couple. The stage before that is "talking." So what Taylor and Travis are doing right now would be "talking," even though they are literally...going out on dates. It's very confusing lol

@mamaspark pieced both of these
āTaylor is such a brilliant storyteller and a masterful songwriter. When she encountered that generative engine that I have where I make a lot of music that just has feelings and images within itāit was like giving her a canvas that she could then give so much substance to. She has a rare gift to conjure these brilliant, narrative, lustful songs. The chemistry was just instantaneous. It was like a wildfire. One of the things that makes her so exceptional is all the different ways that she makes songs. She can make this elaborate, intricate song like āTolerate Itā with me, but then she can, with a different hat, make a perfect pop song. She's incredibly versatile.ā

you showed me colours you know i cant see with anyone else
tbh I think this part of the great war is talking about taylor justifying a cheating
like I know we can interpret this in a multitude of ways but as a messy girlie raised by taylor who was also stuck in a mid-shitty relationship... this justified it hits.
@oldnapkinned I am SO curious about other songs you think walk this line bcs I have thoughts!!
Thereās so many! Iām trying to consolidate my thoughts on it but I basically view the allusions to infidelity in terms of how she framed each album. With Lover, towards the end thereās afterglow, which is basically āIām sorry I accused you of this because this was totally just me and my insecurities, it has nothing to do with youā which makes total sense within an album striving to look at the net positive growth of the relationship.
In folklore, itās interesting because the Betty triangle has no conclusive cheating but there is a definite feeling like James betrayed Betty and used this āother womanā and itās all kind of contextualized within this āpeople do dumb thingsā narrative and the overarching point is that Betty and James chose each other in the end anyway. But I believe there was an underlying current of infidelity running through august and āyou were never mineā and just slowly falling in love with a person who clearly was only with her out of necessity. But still, the message was clear: august was catching feelings for James when she knew he wasnāt hers at all. I wonder how any potential Betty would feel knowing that James was halfway flubbing that it was ājust a summer thingā and how you should take it when a person is saying that when the other woman views it SO differently.
But then we get to hoax which is so clearly antithetical to afterglow in every single way: YOU did this, YOU betrayed me, YOU hurt me. And even though sheās still saying that she wants him, sheās calling out the fact that thatās HER weakness that wants him, instead of her strength.
On evermore, itās probably the most striking shift because itās not even like sheās questioning whether or not he did it (I just canāt prove it etc.) and whether or not she should take him back, itās more concerned with her OWN behavior. What would you do if I did this? What would you do if I were to fuck my hometown ex? What would you do if I said no to your proposal? What would you do if we were married and I cheated on you? I think I would give you forgiveness. I think Iād kill you and your mistress. I think Iād just fall out of love with you. The skeletons in both our closets, the ladies lunching, I hurt him too, all point to different possible endings for this thing.
And then you see those same stories recur on midnights: the small town love, the threat of going out, a āgood husbandā chastising his wife for stepping out and her astonishment at him even noticing, being ultimately alone in my pen, dying within the context of your relationship. I feel like midnights was actively writing the ending to this thing as it was happening.
Iām not sure that infidelity was the main factor or theme, but it was the plot device she used the most in these albums in almost every song that listed their issues. And those songs seem richer for it because it shows how morally and personally dubious the whole thing became without casting either one of them as an ultimate villain.
americans whatās the state that doesnāt feel real to you. for me itās montana. i cannot even conceptualize montana
Just remembered that the Ariana/Ethan situation reminded me of Miranda Lambert. She dated a guy who left his wife and they dated for 2 years. Miranda dumped him and then he went back to his wife and they had a kid.
The guy is Evan Felker, the lead singer of my favorite band the Turnpike Troubadours. He was a mess during that time -- heavily addicted to prescription drugs and alcohol. He left Miranda, got sober and remarried his wife and they have two kids now!
The band also went on a several year hiatus when all this was going on and just got back together last year. I went a concert in April and there were several "FUCK MIRANDA LAMBERT" shirts in the audience. Lol
