Hi there! I’ve really fallen in love with your comics. They’re wonderful! Absolutely brilliant! I’ve enjoyed them so much that I could read them over and over again. My English is terrible, so I thought, why not translate your comics for myself? Somehow, it turned into cleaning the pages of text and overlaying the translation. I’m not very familiar with the artistic side of things. In the comic ‘Stay’, the text has such an interesting effect that without it, the charm is lost and the translation doesn’t look quite the same as the original. What’s it called? And how did you achieve that?
hi!! thank you so much 🥺🥺 i’m very flattered that you want to translate my comics! i used a couple effects in that comic - first sharpen, then noise, then chromatic aberration. you can skip sharpen tbh but noise and chromatic aberration are standard effects you can find in any photo editing software! i hope this helps :-)
Hey I simply love the way you make your comics and I’ve got ideas for some that I’d love to do (because I can’t write for shit) but I’m really not sure how to plan them out, is that something you would get into?
hi!! thank you so much! do you mean like, teach how to make comics? honestly i think im so far away from that point lol im mostly winging it and following the advice i see from other people online!
i can quickly share how i plan things out rn if that’s helpful!
i basically come up with an idea for a story which usually revolves around one pivotal scene, the climax. in “the conversation” it was dennis coming out to trinity, in “pretty” it was robby calling dennis pretty, in “stay” it was robby asking dennis to stay, and in “home” … well you’ll see.
i plan the entire story out beat by beat before i start drawing it at least loosely, i try to follow the 3 act story structure if it’s a longer endeavour like with “home”.
then i get started on thumbnailing each page, i’ll do maybe like 10-13 thumbnails to get started and then i can start drawing out those pages one by one.
i decide on a cohesive colour palette in advance too and kinda just play around with it in the moment as im drawing each page, i don’t really colour key though maybe i should.
as im drawing out the pages i can come back to my script to refine things or my thumbnails if im in a particular mood for loose creative sketching more than precise page work. i usually mix and match as i go so im always having fun. some days are just writing days and some are painting days, you never know!
this is a specific personalised approach that i have but i definitely do recommend having an idea of where the story is going before you start drawing. i’ve rewritten my comics many times and was grateful each time that i gave myself time to think about the writing part in advance so i knew for sure that im committing to drawing something i know for sure works. i’m also a very visual thinker and have a background in sequential art (animation tho not comics) so the layouts kinda come to me naturally but i learn lotsss from creators on insta, one i recommend is @ ncdyerart that has many reels on the making of comics that i found very helpful.
lol this is kind of jumbled cuz i didn’t expect this question but i hope it was helpful in some way!
tl;dr i come up with an idea for a story, i write it out loosely, i do a few thumbnails, i start drawing out pages. then i mix and match the last 3 points until im done
was rereading through your hucklerobby housesitting comic and now the amy and whitaker one on twitter and wow the way you use colors as a throughline is just so wonderful! Really adds to the impact of every panel
thank you so so much!! i love using colour as a way to add to the storytelling soooo much im glad it resonates with people!

Hey, I've been following you for quite a while, since 2020, and I love your art. I remember you talking about your sexuality, are you queer?
2020 is crazy lol thank you! idk why you would be interested in that at all tbh but i’ve always been pretty openly queer yes. i identify more like bi and transmasc as far as labels go
Comparing and contrasting Robby's interactions with Samira vs Whitaker as he spirals further and further downward and out of control is just so much more interesting to me when you take the genders of everyone involved out of it for a second. And I'm not saying that criticisms of Robby as someone with misogynistic biases are completely unfounded or unworthy of discussion, but there is also just so much more there.
It is abundantly clear that Robby sees Samira as a younger, less broken reflection of himself, as has been discussed in great length by people who are far more articulate than I will ever be. But I also see so many people arguing that Robby sees Whitaker through the same lens, so why isn't he treated the same way? And I actually so vehemently disagree with that interpretation, at least in so far as this season goes. I don't think Robby particularly sees himself in Whitaker, I think he feels seen by Whitaker, in more ways than one, and that is the crux of where Robby's attitude towards them differs.
The more Robby's self-loathing manifests, the more critical he becomes of Samira, and seemingly the tighter he attempts to draw Whitaker into his life. Abbot compliments Al Hashimi and says they'll be fine without him, accidentally hitting on Robby's biggest insecurity, and Robby immediately goes to offer Whitaker his house. Samira has a panic attack, so identical to the one Robby still hates himself for, and Robby introduces Whitaker to his motorcycle mentor and tells him how much he trusts him. And I don't see either of these actions as really about Whitaker personally or professionally, but rather what he represents to Robby. Someone who saw him at his weakest moment, guarded his most shameful secret, and still looks up to him as a respected teacher anyway; Someone who makes Robby feel like he isn't the catastrophic failure he views himself as.
Robby is suicidal. Perhaps at the start of the shift it was a more passive ideation, but as the hours drag on he's becoming becoming firmer and firmer in his convictions. And in this, keeping Whitaker close provides him both comfort in feeling seen in his final moments and the belief that he's tying up all his loose ends, that Whitaker will remain quiet and loyal inside the box he's tightly enclosing around himself--something that is inevitably going to blow up in both of their faces.
