for anyone who doesnt play overwatch, heres essentially whats going on in no particular order
symmetra, someone whoâs INDIAN and likely practices HINDUISM if anything at all, was given a CHINESE QIPAO skin and the skin is literally called QIPAO and its still sexualized, bc apparently qipaos and chinese clothing arent constantly sexualized enough
mercy, some WHITE WOMAN, was given a skin based off chinese new year colours, and even worse, a highlight intro where she, a WHITE WOMAN, writes the CHINESE character for good fortune
tracer, a WHITE WOMAN, was given a highlight intro where she does the CHINESE lion dance, the very traditional and culturally important CHINESE lion dance
YELLOW-FACE zenyatta, winston, reinhardt, and roadhog to give them journey to the west themed skins, these four NOT CHINESE characters are given very CHINESE themed character skins
YELLOW-FACE anaâs skin, you know, ana, the dark skinned ARAB MUSLIM WOMAN FROM EGYPT
using CHINESE CULTURE as an ~EXOTIC~ aesthetic for tons of sprays
junkrat, who is NOT chinese, has a voice line where he speaks a CHINESE phrase for good fortune in the new year, and is deckd out in CHINESE fireworks which are actually CULTURALLY SIGNIFICANT and used in CHINESE new year festivals for a reason
in short this event is a fucking racist mess
Okay, this has to be one of the most misinformed posts Iâve seen about Overwatch, so sit your ass down as I refute this point by point. (If you need credentials Iâm actually Chinese plus I play Overwatch on a regular basis :V)
First of all, Lunar New Year is not a religious celebration. It is just a celebration of the new year on the lunar calendar, as the name might suggest. Religion has nothing to do with this. Also, Symmetra isnât actually wearing a qipao, itâs just her usual outfit recoloured into the LNY colour palette. Which is a shame, but thatâs Blizzardâs only crime in this regard.
Are white people not allowed to speak Chinese? At all? And wear Chinese themed clothing? Itâs not even based on racial stereotypes so thereâs nothing wrong with Mercy (and everyone elseâs outfit). Thereâs only one Chinese person in the Overwatch cast. Did you really expect them to load everything on just her and ignore everyone else? I, as a Chinese person, would have been really disappointed in that case. (On a side note, Iâm kinda sad there arenât more Korean themed stuff but Blizzard chose to focus on the Chinese aspect of Lunar New Year I guess.)
The lion dance is not a religious dance. Itâs a celebratory dance and also one of skill. The lionâs dance isnât limited to just Chinese performers, people of other cultures can perform it if they are capable of doing it.
Hahahaha, bud have you LOOKED at the skins? None of those four costumes have anything resembling a yellow face.
Please. Go on. Point out the yellow face. Also thematically each of these four characters fit the skins theyâve received. The protagonist of Journey to the West, Sun Wukong, is a monkey. Why not give it to the gorilla? Zhu Bajie is actually a pig. Roadhog is pig themed. This makes sense right??? Sadly Iâm not as familiar with the other two main protagonists but I can guarantee if I did the research Iâd find nothing wrong.
The sprays as far as Iâve seen have all been respectful and none of them are offensive. Just a bunch of Lunar New Year symbols.
See point above about speaking Chinese. Not to mention, Junkrat says Gong Xi Fa Cai perfectly, itâs not a racist imitation? Itâs a well wishing phrase often said during Chinese New Year to wish the recipient prosperity and fortune. Whatâs wrong with that?
To conclude, Chinese New Year is a celebration that is open for sharing, and Blizzard as far as Iâve seen has been respectful of the event and the Chinese culture. So, OP, shut the fuck up.
That was a very good rebuttal and now here is my take on this (I cannot believe I revived this old ass account to say something) Now I am Singaporean Chinese. My mother is from Shenzhen. And I am raised in a society surrounded by 4 major races. From young we were taught the concept of Racial Harmony. And this ideology says that different races are encouraged to mingle with each other. We accept each other's quirks and see each other as humans. To see people of different races and ethnicities adopt each other's culture, be it in an informal way like our racial harmony celebrations or an official way, as many of my Peranakan friends can tell you, is one of the hallmarks of coexistence in our society. When the game trailer was released I was so glad that Blizzard recognised one of the most significant East Asian festivals as an event by itself. It gives me pride to be Chinese. Now more to the point. Symmetra's default dress is a slight variation of the traditional Cheongsam. The outfit, according to my mum (who has a diploma as a fashion designer) is meant to exemplify the shape of a an ideal woman's body. Basically, if you look pretty average, that thing can turn you into a supermodel. The Journey to the West is one of the best stories ever told. Ever. Period.to have it represented so accurately is amazing, and I love Blizzard for that. Now for the uninformed...and adding on to the previous rebuttal Zenyatta's skin is modeled after Tang Sanzang. He is the monk whose flesh is said to grant immortality. But that is not the point. He is a person of calm mind and devout practice, who stands strongly against violence as and when it happens. Reinhardt is modeled after Sha Wujing, a Sand Monk who lives at the bottom of a river. He is described to be very strong and if anything, the design matches the original character to an almost perfect degree. Tracer was just dancing. Lion Dance in Asia is learnt by virtually every race. It is taught almost like a martial art and like most martial arts, it is entirely possible for say, a black guy to coach a japanese guy on Karate. Because we only see skill, not skin. Mercy's ĺŻ has no racist connotation whatsoever too. It just means Luck, Fortune, Goodwill. Here is the thing, OP. Blizzard never meant to fetishize or butcher East Asian culture, and they never did. They only sought to celebrate what a significant half of their player base probably celebrates as well. I know many people who are of a different race, wearing the traditional costumes of another to celebrate with them. I have white friends, malay friends, indian friends, celebrating each other's holidays. And I am proud that they wear my ethnic costumes as I would have worn theirs. Because it is the diversity we embrace that makes us great. Now be a darling and shut the fuck up.
