The character of Woody has to be one of the most complex, layered, fun, and lovable characters in animation history. I absolutely ADORE this character and the emotional journey he has been through for all four films. Seriously, what a character arc! He’s never been this perfect main lead, he has a heart of gold but also makes major mistakes and lapses in judgement. He’s literally the definition of loyal to a fault! You can’t help but root for this guy while also feeling occasionally disappointed in him. Sometimes it’s pity, sometimes it’s frustration, but it always comes back to pure joy and love. Just when you think his story’s over, we get more and more layers to him. We see what he’s been through, how his feelings and ideologies shift, and yet he has never ONCE felt poorly written or out of character. Woody has been through 4 feature films, 3 shorts, and 2 half-hour specials and he’s always been Woody through and through while also going on such an self reflecting journey! I adore what they did with his character in 4. I don’t want to get into spoilers, but they managed to revisit, reconstruct and reexamine all of Woody’s life as a toy and have him see outside of the box he’s always put himself in, yet it never betrays his sense of self. I just love Woody SO MUCH! His character arc has been so amazing to see, but I’m glad it’s over now. As much as I praise all these films for evolving his character, there really is no where else for his story to go. It’s a nearly perfect journey.
