My college farewell outfit was dreeeaamy. I had a very specific idea in mind for what I wanted it be, so of course I didn’t find it in any of the 16 stores I raided. I finally went to the amazing Dilnaz Karbhary, who understood my vision perfectly. I had the most fun poring over vintage Dior design books for inspiration before we came up with this one, and I couldn’t be happier! I’d say my 2018 resolution to wear more colourful everything is going great so far.

Of course my Black Panther outfit had to be suitably 💅lit 💅!!!

I found this gorgeous blazer of my mom’s from when BHS was the new, ‘cool’ brand in town. This reminds me of the time my family and I were in Italy in 2009 and we asked our B&B hosts about brands like Zara (because Zara was super exotic to us at the time) and he said, “Zara is the cheapest brand”, crushing all our hopes and dreams. We are still in recovery, thank you very much.

Just kidding, these pants are a recent Zara sale find.

My H&M top, a gift from my friend, actually says “Feminism: the radical notion that women are people”. Ah, those days when I believed it was really that simple. Off late I’m more inclined to a feminism that makes no excuses for anyone. For instance, I reject the trans-exclusionary white feminism of people like Rose McGowan. And the upper-caste ‘woke liberal’ feminism of women I once considered my heroes–Nivedita Menon, Kavita Krishnan, Ayesha Kidwai and the like. And I reject, most definitely, the feeble lip service and patronising breadcrumbs of most Bollywood actors. As Ira Madison III would say, KEEP IT.

Interesting parallels between food-related words in Norwegian and English

- the words for restaurant and pasta are the same but with different pronunciations

- wine = vin

- orange = applesin (not a parallel I know, just kinda funny)

- knife = kniv, but the ‘k’ isn’t silent

- melk = milk

- lemon = sitron

- tomato = tomat

P.S. For anyone who wants to pick up a new language but doesn’t have much time on their hands, I highly recommend Norwegian. It’s got extremely simple grammar rules and the pronunciations aren’t too difficult either.

If you’re still unconvinced—watch SKAM, and see if you won’t be dying to understand every word that comes out of their beautiful mouths.

We don’t ever listen. We need to listen to each other. We’re so busy ready to tell what we know. Listen. I still have that love affair with listening. Although I have to talk a lot, sometimes, in a classroom, but also, listening to what people have to say, that’s why it is detrimental to a university, for people to take courses online, when you need to listen to people speak in a classroom, and listen to a professor teach.

It’s not just the fact that trolleys are outmoded—or that, since they travel about 10mph the workers would probably see the damn thing coming and just move out of the way—that makes this a highly unrealistic hypothetical. It’s that in the actual world, decisions do not occur in this kind of vacuum, and it’s just as important to pay attention to the factors that structure individual choices as the nature of those choices. If am forced against my will into a situation where people will die and I have no ability to stop it, how is my choice a “moral” choice between meaningfully different options, as opposed to a horror show I’ve just been thrust into, in which I have no meaningful agency at all? It warps human moral sensibilities, by encouraging us to think about isolated moments of individual choice rather than the context in which those choices occur. It is escapist, in that it allows us to comfortably drift into the realm of the implausible and ridiculous, so that we do not have to confront disturbing truths about our real-world moral failings. And it encourages a kind of fatalism, where everything you do will inevitably be a disaster and moral questions seem hard rather than easy. If you want to actually be a better person, you can start by never wasting a second of your life contemplating trolley problems.

Architects often get mad when non-architects conflate the terms “modernism,” “postmodernism,” “Brutalism,” etc. They love telling people that, say, “Frank Gehry is actually REACTING to postmodernism.” These terminological disputes can obscure the fact that everything under discussion is actually just a minor variation on the same garbage. We are not meant to live in modern buildings; they are made for people who do not poop. there is plenty of space left on earth to spread out horizontally; the only reasons to spread vertically are phallic and Freudian. There’s an easy test for whether a building is beautiful or not. Ask yourself: if this building could speak, would it sound like the Rubaiyat or the works of Shakespeare, or would it make a noise like “Blorp”? For nearly 100 years, we have been stuck in the Age of Blorp. It is time to learn to speak again.
