When I am teaching is the only reliable time in my life where my consciousness of myself is eclipsed by othersā consciousness of me. The one time when, periodically, the balance of consciousness about me in the world is unquestionably outside of myself, even adjusting for intensity.
In a way, it is a time when I am no longer the lead author of my self and its narrative. Not as a matter of history, but of consciousness and perception.
And it is somewhat paradoxical, because it is a moment of authority. I am the teacher. The very context seems to assert my importance. Yet it is also the moment where I least belong to myself.
Many have been struggling with hopelessness these last few yearsāand even more since the election. Too often Iāve asked myself how we should live in a world that can never be repaired. If thatās also you, I hope that you will find this essay on palliative activism helpful.
