I’m watching that documentary “Before Stonewall” about gay history pre-1969, and uncovered something which I think is interesting.
The documentary includes a brief clip of a 1954 televised newscast about the rise of homosexuality. The host of the program interviewed psychologists, a police officer, and one “known homosexual”. The “known homosexual” is 22 years old. He identifies himself as Curtis White, which is a pseudonym; his name is actually Dale Olson.
So I tracked down the newscast. According to what I can find, Dale Olson may have been the first gay man to appear openly on television and defend his sexual orientation. He explains that there’s nothing wrong with him mentally and he’s never been arrested. When asked whether he’d take a cure if it existed, he says no. When asked whether his family knows he’s gay, he says that they didn’t up until tonight, but he guesses they’re going to find out, and he’ll probably be fired from his job as well. So of course the host is like …why are you doing this interview then? and Dale Olson, cool as cucumber pie, says “I think that this way I can be a little useful to someone besides myself.”
1954. 22 years old. Balls of pure titanium.
Despite the pseudonym, Dale’s boss did indeed recognize him from the TV program, and he was promptly fired the next day. He wrote into ONE magazine six months later to reassure readers that he had gotten a new job at a higher salary.
Curious about what became of him, I looked into his life a little further. It turns out that he ultimately became a very successful publicity agent. He promoted the Rocky movies and Superman. Not only that, but get this: Dale represented Rock Hudson, and he was the person who convinced him to disclose that he had AIDS! He wrote the statement Rock read. And as we know, Rock Hudson’s disclosure had a very significant effect on the national conversation about AIDS in the U.S.
It appears that no one has made the connection between Dale Olson the publicity agent instrumental in the AIDS debate and Dale Olson the 22-year-old first openly gay man on TV. So I thought I’d make it. For Pride month, an unsung gay hero.

i do find the rules around clothes fascinating because of how made up it all is. we invented the idea of covering our bodies from the elements because we lack fur like other mammals and then made up all these rules around it and now people will unironically tell you "men cant wear skirts its unnatural" girl none of this is natural. we are born naked and made up the rest as we went along. hope this helps.

Gonna give a bit of context and a bunch of extra info about this comic under the cut for anybody interested in reading my thoughts on it <3

So I'm not going to explain my whole idea because I want to make that into a comic as well and also it's too long to put here, but I want to explain why Will is only seeing the painting in that moment and not earlier. So in the idea I have Will and Mike get together their first week into college (they both go to different colleges tho) and it happens kind of suddenly and at night and they only kiss and then the next morning Will has to leave really quickly. Then they don't see each other for a week and only talk on the phone and the next time they are together in Mike's dorm room is when this comic happens. That's why Will doesn't know Mike has hung up the painting in his dorm room even though he was in there before (for the kiss). Cause first it was dark and then he didn't have the time to really look around. Anyways that's the context I mostly wanted to give for this so that it makes sense. It probably also makes sense without the context, now that I think about it, but I still wanted to explain <3
Oh also I hope I made it clear enough in the dialogue, but what Mike is telling Will here is that he knows that Will made the painting for him all by himself, that he knows the truth about it and that he understands and loves it (and Will) :> also this could be their first ily but I'm not sure yet...

I might make an extra post with more close ups because there are so many details I want to show but for now I also have this list of little details I added that I love and that might not be noticed unless I point them out:
The soft little blue and green hearts in the background; Mike has a poster with stars on it for Will the Wise; all the hickeys and scratches, also Will has a hickey on his thigh that you can only see in two of the panels; also all of Will's hickeys have little blue details on them because Mike made them and all of Mike's hickeys have yellow details on the because Will made them; Will's knee being in the frame a little in the second panel; I chose specific places for all the beauty marks/spots on their skin cause I love when that type of stuff is consistent in every part of the drawing; Will's internal monologue kind of narrating and especially the little "oh wow"; the colors are all very vibrant (that wasn't really my intention but I'm choosing to love it); also the color scheme being mostly green, blue, yellow, red; I tried giving the speech bubbles that have actual dialogue/spoken words in them clearer/sharper edges and the ones that have more sounds or exclamations in them softer edges; Mike holding Will's face in the last panel and Will's hand on Mike's shoulder and then in his hair; I also made Will's fingertips and the places where they're touching Mike intentionally very red because I wanted it to kind of show heat with every touch; the paintinggg, I love how the painting turned out; I think my favorite panel is the third one, the one with the close up on Will's face; sweaty hair!!! Sweaty hair sticking to skin!!! Mike's sweaty hair sticking to Will's skin; the way I write Mike's name whenever Will says it (that's not my usual handwriting); I honestly really love the shading in this one; I'm also very proud of all the perspective stuff
I think that's it for now, I'd love it if people would zoom in for the details cause they're all very dear to me ^^
Also I added this static effect and some color overlays over the finished comic so here is a version without those effects <33
If I were to, hypothetically, put together an account where you can submit your favorite Rosekiller WIPs, and then I'd put all of those fics into a database of sorts, would anyone be interested in that? Every week, I'd pick a few that are either relatively new, have been recommended by a few people, or are low on hits/kudos/comments to show some love to new/lesser-known authors as well as some of the newer projects of fandom faves!
@/wolfstarwips does something similar, and I just think it's a super cool idea!
