This scene hurts so much because Din literally gave everything he had for this kid. He gave up his place in the guild, his covert, and his own safety when he rescued him in chapter 3. He gave up his Creed for him when he took his helmet off in chapter 15 to complete the face scan that would help him find the ship that had taken him. And now he's giving up the last thing he has: the child that he gave everything else up for.
