This cloud formation consists of high-altitude clouds, particularly cirrocumulus or altocumulus clouds, which form a patchy or wavy pattern. It indicates moisture in the upper atmosphere and often signals an approaching warm front or moving, unstable air, which frequently brings short-lived showers.

Although the rhyme is not precise enough to replace a modern digital forecast, it is a reliable short-term indicator of changing weather, particularly in maritime and coastal areas.

At sea, ‘never wet for long, never dry for long’ means unpredictability – a reminder to remain vigilant, shorten planning horizons and expect changes.
