I love bookbinding fics lol I do it all the time. I never ask the authors for their permission. my shelf is full of fics I read and love. and no, I do not think permission is ever necessary. because if it’s for personal use only then how someone reads fanfic writers’ works—be it on their device screen or on physical paper—doesn’t affect the author in any way. the same logic applies to downloading fics, which is a built-in feature on ao3. anybody is free to download any fics they want without asking the authors for their permission first. because it’s for personal use, and how someone reads fanfics doesn’t concern the authors in any way. it doesn’t affect the authors or their works in any way.
