I worry a little bit that people who refuse to learn about ai as a part of their anti ai position are going to be extremely unprepared to understand what’s actually scary about it and already have their digital literacy at risk tbh
not that I am some genius in this regard but if you follow ai developments even slightly you might change the things you are most worried about. do people know the extent to which ai is already eating itself and how meaningless this is making swaths of the internet. do people know that there are plenty of random mid-sized companies today buying their employees’ likenesses to create digital clones and using these to make hundreds of videos. I am so much more worried about labor and surveillance and abuse than people becoming lazy about writing emails. and idk man I sort of like and respect people who are willfully ignorant about it as a way of minimizing its force in their lives and I am in some ways jealous but also when I see posts that basically still boil down to “chatgpt will never fool me” I am like 😭😭😭 for one thing not the only thing to be concerned about, for another thing I am really sorry but I don’t think you’re right
"chatgpt will never fool me”
If you think this, then I'm sorry but I can almost guarantee that it already has. By this point, you've read something, seen something, used something, reblogged something AI generated and not known it. How could you, when it was trained to produce an average of all human expression put into the world?
The issue is not "being fooled". The issues are many and various - pick your fight, there's something for everyone: labour rights and employment; climate change and water accessibility; noise and heat pollution from data centres; price fixing and collusion; component scarcity impacting medical devices; privacy and data harvesting; the general lawlessness of AI companies; the deliberate construction of a economic bubble that will crash people's pensions, savings, and mortgages; the use of AI in lawmaking and politics; algorithmic policing and sentencing; the use of AI in warfare; AI companies inflicting constant stress and fear on people as a marketing gimmick; increased frequency of cyberterrorist attacks, data breaches, blackmail, and scams; misinformation, disinformation, and data pollution; AI psychosis and its effect on mental health; the impact on children's social and cognitive development; the impact on adult's social and cognitive skills; AI-enabled terrorism and mass-shootings; AIs getting kids to commit suicide...
There is so much bad stuff going on in the AI sphere that a random person using an LLM to write fanfic or farm likes/karma is literally the least concerning thing. Pick one or two topics that really matter to you and dig in. Get informed and make yourself known to your representatives and lawmakers.
