In 1x01, when Greta offers to cut Carson’s hair because it’s “holding her back”, Carson cites Charlie’s preferences for long hair as a reason for her initial hesitance. But as Greta does Carson’s hair, Carson begins to open up to her about her dissatisfaction with her marriage and concerns over her future, to which Greta encourages her to find her own destiny. It’s an important turning point for Carson in beginning to consider what she wants instead of what others expect from her. The conversation, coupled with the intimacy of the moment—Greta’s soft touches and checking in for consent—appears to spark a shift for Carson. Carson’s haircut is representative of her letting go of her past and opening up to her own curiosities as she begins this new chapter of her life. In addition, Greta’s comment, “I think we can see you better now,” takes on a second meaning of her seeing Carson for who she is, recognizing Carson’s queerness even if she doesn’t see it for herself yet.

For Max, there are two pivotal scenes related to her hair in 1x05 that parallel her journey of growing confident in her queerness. The first is when she asks Toni to do her hair. It’s a moment of reconciliation and vulnerability for them after they’ve been at odds. But when Toni asks Max what she wants, she defers with “Whatever you think will look nice.” It is such a common and recognizable queer experience to hold yourself back from asking for the haircut you really want out of fear of breaking norms, and that is likely part of what is going on here. But in addition, the scene is also reminiscent of a missed attempt at coming out—Max wants to be open with her mother, but she can’t. Instead, she visits Gary, trying (and failing) to conform to the expectation of heterosexuality. Meanwhile, in the episode’s final scene, Bertie is the one to give Max the haircut that is authentic to her and boosts her confidence. Like Greta with Carson, he is one of the first people to see Max’s true self and thus becomes a role model for her, providing a safe space for her to explore and figure out how she wants to express herself in a way that she didn’t have with Toni.
