YOU GOT TO BE KIDDING ME
And it still remains this way even after I refresh the page. Tumblr really just gave up on trying to entertain me lmao.
the philippine leafbird is a small, vibrant green bird endemic to the philippines (although it appears most of their stronghold is on the island mindanao, with recorded sightings on the cebu, leyte, and samar islands being sporadic and challenging to verify). their natural habitat is moist lowland forest, where they forage in high canopies. it’s believed most of their diet consists of fruits, nectar, and insects, based on what is known about the diets of other similar leafbirds. they are bright green, with paler coloration on the chest and face; accompanied by a yellow eye-ring and throat. they are typically easy to identify, as no other green birds of their size occur in the philippine leafbird’s range. sadly, their population is decreasing, primarily due to habitat loss in their range.
Hypothetical situation.
Imagine an artificial pond of ideal size, with the ideal amount of plants, hiding places etc., and which is heated to the ideal temperature. Now imagine throwing a bunch of bettas in there. Halfmoons, crowntails, plakats, veiltails, rose petals, you name it. All colors and patterns. All of the varieties currently available in pet stores. There is an ideal ratio of females to males. The pond is big enough for them all to find territory and food and minimize lethal fights. They are safe from predators and disease is not a factor. This is an environment where sexual selection is the single biggest deciding factor for who reproduces and who doesn’t.
What would happen? What would the bettas in that pond look like after ten generations? Fifty? A hundred? Would we see the males converge on a specific fin shape and color(s) as the females “agree” on an ideal mate’s appearance, or would they all begin to diverge into different populations and eventually species?
Personally I find the latter more likely, but eh it’s just a hypothetical ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ And I’m not a betta breeder either lol just a betta enjoyer.
That's an interesting question, I'd like to discuss it. I hope more people join.
As for tail shape, I'm fairly certain that it would be short (plakat-ish). Plakat bettas are significantly more active and energetic than their long finned counterparts and aren't as inbred (except for fancy variations such as "candy plakat"). Them being healthier, together with the fact that long finned variants usually have a hard time swimming and often pause to rest, makes you think that plakats would be far more successful at spawning, favoring shorter fins for the future generations.
As for colour... It's more complicated. Since you stated that predation is out of question, I think they would be bright as bright scales indicate health, therefore, are a preferred trait. They may be reddish as two studies showed us that female bettas prefer males with red colour. But they wouldn't be as red as the bettas you see in stores, whose appearances are acquired by artificial selection. Maybe a "cloudy" red, mixed with some other colours/patterns. But of course there would be bettas that look different (plus recessive genes are a thing), this is just what I estimate the majority may look like, considering the preferences of female bettas.
In case you're interested, here's an article about female bettas' preferences when choosing a mate.
I personally don't think they would evolve into different species as the environment and the conditions are the same, so there wouldn't be any pressure to change and adapt. That is considering they never run out of resources and living space.

Just found out the first grunion run of 2025 will happen on Friday the 13th. @grunionposting Any explanations?
no fishy explanation for this, just a fun coincidence. it lines up with a full moon too, which is pretty neat
i wanted to post this with a link to some old runs, but couldn’t find anything :/
if anyone has a link to a grunion run record base or something with dates listing out each of the runs for the previous years, let me know. It’d be cool to reference
(responding to grunion) Aw no need to be scared! These are all just make-believe, like you said. The day itself doesn't mean anything. Just be very careful of the humans...
(responding to you) I couldn't find a whole database but I found the schedule of 2020, if you find it useful? https://www.welikela.com/grunion-run-schedule-2020/

"They ruined Minecraft!!! And the game said I love you because I am love!!! Why is the sheep dumb?!" im sorry tumblr user endermanpenis did you forget that minecraft is a game for ten year olds
Except that fans were waiting since 2014, when it was first announced that there would be an official Minecraft movie. Of course people are gonna be upset after the movie they waited for ten years, a movie based on a successful game, turns out to be a ripoff of an existing popular movie with some fancy visual effects added. Trust me, nobody was expecting a Shakespearean tragedy, but how hard was it to make a movie that at least caught the game's atmosphere? About the target demographic, they could've easily made something that could be enjoyed by people from all ages, just like the game itself, you know. The problem isn't that it's goofy when Minecraft itself has many goofy features (April fool's updates, LOLCAT language etc) the problem is that it appears the whole movie just revolves around "this world is so random lol" and more importantly, it seems way more about the real life people instead of the in-game universe. Just because the target demographic is kids doesn't mean they had to make it a soulless cash grab. After waiting for a decade for this, fans simply feel disrespected, rightfully.
Today I found out Shrek OST has a theme literally named "Saving Donkey's Ass". Do whatever you want with this information.

The spirit of the early 2010s internet always lurks around like a ghost and occasionally possesses me. Today was one of those days and...
...apparently people created a deep Nyan Cat lore?
I came across this Nyan Cat fandom wiki page and learned new things about what once was just a silly cute pixel gif.
What?
I'm sorry but.... LMFAO

Does anyone know if fish can taste
Yes, they can! They have taste buds. They can even like or dislike certain foods, just ask betta owners.
Fun fact: Some fish have taste buds on their lips and faces as well, meaning they can taste something without actually eating it.
OH YAY
Thank you this is delightful!
I hope all fish get their favorite snacks today
You're welcome, and yes, I hope so too!

An entry for a challenge on Arts & OCs Amino. I almost missed the deadline but here I am!
For the challenge we had to base a sea creature on steam-powered technology, and I chose to draw a lancetfish. I think they're underrated. Drawing this reminded me of Feed Us, a series of flash games where you play as a piranha. I imagined this lancetfish would be fitting as some kind of an antagonist in the game.

It's done! I haven't been sharing art for a while but I wanted to share this as I really like how it turned out. An Aether dragon, ascending to infinite skies.
While I was painting this I realised that it looks very similar to an another drawing involving an Aether dragon I made back in 2018. It was completely coincidental, I wasn't re-drawing it but I "re-drew" it without realising, strange. The 2018 drawing featured an Aether dragon and a dark dragon whose species is unidentified (maybe it was an original species of mine, I don't remember right now. Or maybe I indeed created it without a certain species in my mind.) and implied them being "opposites". This made me think, maybe I should make a separate drawing involving that other dragon so the pieces "complete" each other.
Here's the old drawing I'm talking about:
Has my art improved? I think so! Another thing I notice is that how juvenile the dragon looks here. The proportions, the eyes, the snout... The one I recently drew looks more serious, for the lack of a better term. Curious how characters we draw seem to "mature" with us.
starting a tag game! take this quiz to find out what kind of shark you are, reblog with your results, and tag a few people you think would enjoy :) i’ll go first!
i think this is pretty accurate!!
