Off the Grid: Movement Workshop and Field Trip

Led by Elliott Maltby—a designer and founding partner of thread collective, a collaborative design studio that explores the seams between building, art and landscape—the movement workshop encouraged participants to adapt and apply the arbitrary, rule-based systems that underpin Gaines’s works. Participants animated the unique grid of Manhattan, calling on and channeling the themes of conceptualism.

All Things Grids: In addition to the work of Charles Gaines, this blog will highlight the work of artists who incorporate the grid. United by the theme of a “grid aesthetic,” the works featured represent a cross section of movements, generations and materials, and demonstrate the varied use of the grid in modern and contemporary art.
