It's a classic. They are the blue/red ship of the Fandom. John is probably Dave's first crush. They are friends and being friends makes a nice foundation for a romance to bloom.

johndave is classic best-friends to lovers. it is the first ever pair to have an interaction, it is the first ever ship written about, it is literally the default ship. but, that isn't all there is to them. they directly help eachother, John becomes freedom via is classpect, and Dave needs freedom. freedom from his abuse, freedom to make his own decisions, he needs John. Dave uses time to his advantage; "protects" time and John needs the patience in his life. he needs for everything to be slow, to let him have a thought, Dave "protects" time; which can be read as Dave protecting the one thing John needs most. they are bounds by space and time to help eachother. they also parallel eachother. Dave lives in a trashy urban apartment in one of the hottest states. John lives in a regular suburban house in a (rainy but chill) state. Then there's davesprite. the Dave who sacrificed everything in order to save John from the hands of himself. the Dave who's one desire is to be seen as "the real dave". I have reason to believe that davesprite's self-loathing stems off of John not loving him. he sacrificed everything for John. he wants John to love him (platonically or romantically is your decision). johndave may be generic, it may be the average joe of ships, but they were made to protect eachother. also they are very cute. (the johndave song is totally geeks in love by lemon demon but Id vote birds of a feather by kind of like spitting!)

have you ever thought about how one of the biggest steps to getting dave out of his brother's shadow was....because of john? john gave dave his glasses, the glasses that replaced the pointed ones, and told him in the birthday letter that he "hopes dave steps out of his brother's shadow" (or something of the such.) and dave, does that. john -> is the reason for his freedom of self, john becomes freedom, it's again showing that john is narratively what dave needs. boom, pepsicola greatest ship.

the ship is touch starved x touch starved, she near-canonically has a crush on him, dave's one-pixel smile when he talks to her, the way he makes her giggle..!! within homestuck proper it's a beautiful friends-to-lovers story where they both have crushes on each other and manage to overcome multiple apocalypses and years apart to stay with one another.
