ARTISTS AND WRITERS WANTED for HAZARDOUS JOURNEY on JOINT CREATIVE VENTURE
Never Mind the Blizzard is an upcoming zine dedicated to the Heroic Age of Antarctic exploration, and we now invite all artists and writers interested in this colourful period of polar history to submit work to us!
So, grab your sledging pencil or polar paint kit—we’re looking for:
Anything under the umbrella of visual arts, including paintings, illustrations, comics, collage, diagrams, printmaking, and more.
Creative writing: short pieces of fiction, vignettes, creative nonfiction, poetry, etc.
Any combination of these.
In other words: if it (1) relates to an Antarctic expedition taking place between 1897 and 1922 and (2) can be put to (digital) paper, send it our way! Playfulness and formal experimentation is encouraged, and everyone is invited to contribute regardless of skill level. Please see the submission guidelines on our website for a few more details.
Submit your finished work HERE by August 15th (23:59 GMT).
Introducing...
Never Mind the Blizzard, an upcoming zine by and for fans of the Heroic Age of Antarctic exploration!
The zine aims to be an informal, low-pressure publication for creative work of any kind (art, comics, fiction, creative non-fiction, poetry, anything else you can think of) as long as it concerns Antarctic life circa 1897-1922. Contributions do not have to be very “serious” or polished; true to polar periodical form, the main goal is just for us to entertain ourselves and each other throughout this long Antarctic winter.
The result will be a digital zine that can be downloaded for free or on a pay-what-you-want basis. Proceeds will go to the Antarctic Wildlife Research Fund (AWR).
Interested? Follow us here or on X / Gumroad to stay updated - and keep an eye out for a call for submissions very shortly!
Questions, comments, concerns: get in touch at [email protected] or via DM.
I’m SUPER excited to be able to share this now!!! We’re a small team and we’re so looking forward to hopefully making something really cool (ha, ha) with the polar community!! ❄️ Make sure to follow the account for updates to come!

Old comic from ‘23, when I was still working my way through the various heroic age expedition books and noticing some… similarities
Hello. can anyone hear me. hello
Hello. can anyone hear me. hello
I'm curious if Hussey ever had any recordings of his voice available, because he just seems like the type that someone would naturally want to record, and if anyone knew it would probably be you.
He does! Some of them we only have records of, like this 1926 one...
... But there are a few online I can share here!
The new Endurance documentary (2024) has some clips of him talking, if you can access that on streaming. The documentary they pull from is from 1957, and features multiple members of the crew together in the studio — and if you're ever interested in the full thing, it can be seen in-person at the BFI!
Here's a longer broadcast with multiple audio clips of the crew scattered throughout (Hussey at 25:10 and 51:26)
Here's a 'Witness History' podcast episode with old interview clips with the crew, including Hussey (it doesn't say which crew member is talking but his voice is at 3:28)
And this forum has a little interview with him on the BBC including some banjo-ing, which I'll post here:
and here's a pic of him at the BBC in from a different show in 1943 that seems to have been lost to time!
Bedtime doodle :)

Two Endurance birthday boys today, here engaged in one of their sing-alongs: “cheery little fellow” Alf Cheetham with his squeaky voice, and “peppery little individual” Leonard Hussey with his banjo!
