RIPWEEK 2021
Day 7 |Ā Free Day
Oh boy.... What a awesome week I had. Iāve joined a great community of Rip Hunter lovers and they do an amazing job to appreciate this awesome character. At the moment Iām not quite good in writing FFs in english, so I decided to make an FMV like the good old times. How I missed them.Ā
I guess it went pretty well. Hope youāll enjoy watching it.Ā

Uh evil rip is best. Love him so badass
the strutā¢
Todayās prompt for RipWeek isĀ āOne person acting alone canāt save the world.ā
And thereās something funny about that to me.Ā I mean, on one hand, I think it encapsulates Ripās feelings about the issue very well.Ā Rip is at heart a people person.Ā He befriends Jonah Hex (and presumably a far future Barry Allen)On th, allies with the JSA, he gathers the Legends, he establishes the Time Bureau, he picks up Wally.Ā Heās just simultaneously awful at actually interacting with people.
On the other though, itās pretty hilarious that Rip is far far more effective on his own than he is with other people.
Rip is a decent fighter with the team, though I wouldnāt list him as one of the strongest.Ā He had trouble taking on one giant Russian in a sauna, after all.Ā And yet in Out of Time, as soon as the Legends leave, he takes on an entire room of Nazis, in a poorly fitting dress uniform, all without spilling a drink.
Look at evil Rip, that calm, efficient way that he ambushed the Legends and tore through the ship for the spear shard.Ā Ā Look at his takeover of Camelot, and the destruction of the compass in Land of the Lost.Ā That is a very efficient, very skilled man.
Hell, look at the Time Bureau.Ā As soon as the manās away from the legends, he manages to create a full on, theoretically self-sustainable agency (okay, it only lasts one more season, but I blame poor management) with a completely new operating style and technology.Ā
Hell, he makes a pretty good showing in Return of the Mack, with those time pellets.Ā Sure, Dahrk ended up getting the better of him, but no oneās perfect.
Rip is a man who is credited with inventing the Time Sphere, off screen.Ā He adjusted Mid-Niteās emotional stabilization device to mass mind control.Ā He presumably built the time corridors and the time pellets.
The man is terrifying!Ā As long as heās not with the group.
Iām sure there are Doylistic explanations for that (for one, we actually want the team to be able to do things, and the characters tend to lose abilities anyway as the plot demands - see Sara and her ability to control the team in late season 2 vs. any later season), but Iām more interested in the Watsonian end, because it does seem intentional.Ā It would be easy enough to just make Rip an overwhelmed bumbler the whole time.Ā Or even just a chaotic wild card like the Doctor, who canāt be expected to be consistent.Ā Ā
But they make a point of it.Ā Jon Valor talks about his impressive reputation.Ā Zaman Druce is fairly desperate to win him over.Ā And as the examples show, under certain circumstances, Rip IS badass.
We can theorize why.Ā The Time Masters were not team players.Ā Each Time Captain weāve seen has been alone with their ship.Ā Miranda was praised for a maneuver that put her and her partner in danger without telling him.Ā Rip had a childhood where relying on other people was not an option, and heās a basket case that needs decades worth of therapy.
Iād like to think Rip is still out there (no body=no death!), collecting a bunch of random people, bumbling along with them, and eventually pissing them off too.Ā This time in a bunker in Arizona.Ā Who knows, maybe one day heāll make it work.

So day 3 of RipWeek isĀ āIāve seen darker daysā.
This topic makes me think of season one and what I truly did love about it.
Iām not going to claim season one was perfect.Ā In my opinion, it took a little too long to find its groove, and while there were a few great episodes in the front part of the season (particularly blood ties, dealing with Saraās blood lust and her continuing fight to control it), I didnāt feel like it truly gelled until after Marooned shook things up a little.
But I think overall, there was a pretty powerful theme of grief, acceptance and moving on.Ā Rip was the most obvious example, but I think it was true for most of the characters to some extent.
Sara, for example, was grieving over her lost innocence.Ā It didnāt consume her the way that Ripās grief was consuming him, of course.Ā But it was something she dealt with every day: when she found herself compelled to violence, when she succumbed to the effects of the 1950s and rejoined the League.Ā When she found herself drawn to the nurse Lindsay and her responses to that.Ā It wasnāt overt, but over the course of the season, we saw Sara come to terms with her past and find strength and purpose aboard the Waverider.Ā Ā
Kendra was grieving her normal life.Ā People mocked her barista line, but thatās because people lack fucking empathy.Ā The poor girl had an ordinary, happy life before she was suddenly swept up into this crazy nightmare of loved ones she canāt remember, an abuser obsessed through lifetimesā¦.
Not all the characters were so strongly tied to their losses, but they were at least touched upon: Rayās fiancee, Jaxās dad.Ā Leonard Snart tried to save his childhood through keeping his father from prison.
Even Mick found himself grieving the man Snart was, or at least heād thought he was, before theyād joined the team, while Last Refuge showed us that some hurts run deeper than that.
But each character had their own arc that moved them past that.
And of course, Ripās arc was center stage.Ā And as cheesy and ridiculous as season one could be, Iāll never forget Rip flying the Waverunner into the sun and then, finally, choosing life instead.Ā Ā
(Later season Legends has committed many sins, but I will never forgive the showrunners for having Rip take back that choice.)
I guess itās funny.Ā The theme is darker days, but Iām talking about how Legends was better then.Ā But I think it was.
Season 1 Legends wasnāt afraid to be dark, and it wasnāt afraid to be painful.Ā And yes, it could be very funny, but that wasnāt the point.Ā The humor in season 1 came from the characters.Ā And sometimes it came from pain or callousness, or anger.Ā The characters werenāt always likable and they werenāt always fun, but they grew and became stronger and better.
Iām not going to say that later seasons Legends canāt be dark, I know that Zari and John Constantine in particular have had plots that address grief and guilt.Ā But I feel like the show isnāt willing to commit the way it used to.Ā At least not without some kind of wacky subplot to lighten the mood.Ā And thereās nothing wrong with that, I suppose.Ā But I liked it better the way it was.
