The community benefits meeting held at UAW Local 7 regarding Chrysler's renovation plans for the Mack Engine Plant was PACKED! No seats, standing only, people refused entrance due to capacity. FCA is expanding the existing plant out to the curb. The empty lots across on St Jean from Warren to Mack are currently being leveled to put in a parking structure. The expansion plans are to change the plant over to FULL ASSEMBLY of the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Existing workers at the plant is about 700. The revised plant will have 5,000 jobs. There are over 12,000 construction jobs short term. One of the early questions asked was "what percentage of Detroit Residents would be on construction crews?" It has been very evident that bringing the labor force of Detroit's young workers up is needed badly. Economically the neighborhoods struggle and facing gentrification simply shows corporations and the government haven't brought enough focus to employing residents. Most residents find work outside the city. That means tax incentives and earned wages don't get turned over within the city's economy fast enough. Metro Detroit gains but the city itself continues to suffer. The photo obviously shows Detroit Residents are convened but they aren't getting an eat from corruptions without intervention of a community benefit ordinance. One that most companies are skirting around by being just under requirements for implementing; or as Chrysler is showing doing the work before even a draft CBA is created, then claiming they couldn't fit it in. I'm of the opinion tax incentives have to be withheld / negotiated until corporate behavior listens to public concerns fully. All the pre-meetings need questioned and documented. Decision points in development need to be analyzed for compliance with local sourcing needs.
