I took 2 selfies at the library!Â
Lavoisier is having none of your shit.
Heeeey so fun fact: the woman in that painting is Lavoisierâs wife, Marie-Anne Pierrette Paulze, who not only acted as Lavoisierâs lab assistant but also translated English and Latin texts into French so he could read them. But she didnât just translate, she pointed out errors in the chemistry in some of the texts. Her observations of these errors convinced Lavoisier to study combustion, which led to his discovery of oxygen. She was also critical to the publication of Lavoisierâs Elementary Treatise on Chemistry in 1789. She kept strict records of every experiment they conducted together and drew detailed diagrams of all their equipment. She also threw amazing parties and invited all the brightest minds in science so her husband could pick their brains. After Lavoisier was guillotined she secured all of his notebooks and equipment for posterity.
In short: NOBODY KICKS MADAME LAVOISIER OUT OF THE LAB.
Also, a side note: My historian husband-to-be pointed some things out to me about this painting. Notice that Madame Lavoisier is looking at the viewer, and all the light is on her, while Lavoisier himself is physically smaller than her, in shadow, and looking up to her in reverence. This isnât a candid photograph- all of these choices are deliberate. The painting isnât of Lavoisier- Madame Lavoisier is meant to be the central subject.Â
I can just imagine Lavoisier telling all his colleagues that his wife is really the one with all the clever ideas, and them patting him on the back and telling him heâs sweet for saying so.

Oh okay.
I canât not reblog.
I care too much.
reblogging this to remind myself to donate when I get my purseÂ
reblogging this because I really want them to live like we do.
A MUST TO REBLOG
PLEASE REBLOG. I donât care if itâs truth or not. But it may be, and you have to understand that this is REALLY important. When you get your hands dirty you just go to the bathroom and clean them. Well this people canât, and they canât shower either. And they need that water to drink it, and to stay alive. Thereâs people out there suffering, and just by reblogging you can help them. So please, I donât care if this doesnât fit your blog, this is actually worth it.

Identification of a protein that may increase the currently short therapeutic window in stroke
A new study published in the prestigious publication The EMBO Journal shows that the mitochondrial protein Mfn2 may be a future therapeutic target for neuronal death reduction in the late phases of an ischemic stroke. The study has been coordinated by Dr Francesc Soriano, RamĂłn y Cajal researcher at the Department of Cell Biology of the University of Barcelona (UB) and member of the Research Group Celltec UB. The study, funded by the FundaciĂł La MaratĂł de TV3, is part of the PhD thesis developed by Ălex Martorell Riera (UB), first author of the article. Experts Antonio Zorzano and Manuel PalacĂn, from the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of UB and the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona), and JesĂşs PĂŠrez Clausell and Manuel Reina, from the Department of Cell Biology of UB, also collaborated in the study.
When blood flow is blocked in the brain
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), strokes are the second leading cause of death in the world. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel is blocked interrupting blood flow in the brain. Ictus damage is progressive: it begins some minutes after the attack. Recommended treatment consists in restoring blood flow to the brain, but it must be done during the first four hours after the stroke.
According to researcher Francesc Soriano, âone of the main causes of brain death in ictus events is glutamate increase; glutamate is the main excitatory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. Glutamate extracellular concentrations remain low due to the activity of membrane transporters, which require energy to workâ.
When blood flow is blocked, energy levels are reduced in the affected area. This phenomenon leads glutamate transporters to work inversely, so glutamate is expelled to the extracellular space. Glutamate activates its receptors âparticularly, the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDA)â on neuronsâ surface, a process that triggers an excessive flux of calcium, the activation of a series of reactions and neuronal death, in a process known as excitotoxicity. âMany of these excitotoxic cascades âpoints out Sorianoâ converge on the mitochondrion, an organelle which plays a major role not only in energy production, but also in apoptosisâ.
New therapeutic strategies against ischemic ictus
Specifically, Mfn2 is a mitochondrial protein involved in the regulation of organellesâ morphology and function. The team led by Dr Francesc Soriano has just discovered that the reduction in Mfn2 protein levels occurs four hours after the initiation of the excitotoxic process in in vitro and in vivo animal models.
In vivo experiments proved that if Mfn2 reduction is stopped, delayed excitotoxic cell death is blocked. The research team from the Department of Cell Biology of UB found that the Mfn2 reduction is triggered by a genetic transcription mechanism (DNA is transcribed into RNA molecules). UB experts also discovered that MEF2 is the transcription factor involved in this process. Authors affirm that these findings are essential to find a strategy to reverse Mfn2 reduction.
Currently, the team led by Dr Francesc Soriano are researching on brain damage in excitotoxic conditions in animal models where the gene Mfn2 has been removed. The main objective is to design therapeutic strategic in order to reduce damage.

SHONDA RHIMES âA screenwriterâs adviceâ
Amazing, AMAZING advice from my favorite screenwriter! I think we all get caught in this trap of dreaming and wishing instead of actually doing, and itâs important to always keep on foot on the ground when dreaming.
