The Maritime Museum of San Diego, stewards of HMS Surprise (formerly Rose) have announced that the ship will close as a dockside exhibit on August 1st, 2027. This comes after a professional assessment about the financial feasibility of keeping her open. The organization aren't pursuing a fundraiser, but are exploring options for where she can go next.

I'm deeply saddened by this news—especially at a time when many ships are struggling to stay afloat due to lack of funds. I'll never forget the hospitality the museum showed me when I was on tour with Baggywrinkles. Getting to do an event aboard a historic steam ferry was a real treat.

If you haven't had the chance, you have a year to make it to San Diego and step aboard this truly gorgeous vessel. She's well worth the trip!

I just got back from San Diego and we had a chance to tour the Maritime Museum! It was beautiful and informative. Definitely worth the effort if you’re ever in SD! Also, the ComicCon Museum is pretty cool too. Actually, all of Balboa Park is pretty wonderful!
