It's a quick walk down streets that are little more than alleys littered with mopeds; people stop talking to stare as they go by. Colourful laundry hangs from clotheslines that cross the narrow gap between tall buildings, most of these in a startling state of disrepair. Even though the sun doesn’t reach the stone streets, the heat is oppressive, much more humid than Rome. The noise is jarring, too. The rattling roar of window air-conditioners provides a mocking soundtrack to the sweat dripping down John’s back.
