the rules are as follows: you can only buy a timer if you're 16+ years old. it stays off until your soulmate gets their own timer. once you both have it, it will start the countdown. when you're finally in front of your soulmate, both your timers will beep loudly. (inspired by this fic)
veronica's dad buys her one on her sixteenth birthday. her boyfriend brad is standing right next to her, staring anxiously at his own blank one, and when they install hers, it goes off. hers. his stays blank. it's a little disappointing, but it marks eight years and veronica's smarter than that. she's not going to ruin a perfectly nice relationship because of a silly watch.
the thing is, she really thought barney would be the one. she kept waiting for reports to start appearing about how timers weren't really working for anyone, but it was the opposite. and yet hers kept counting down. the biggest irony was that hers and barney's marked the exact same time, and long after the baby, after the break up, once she's started to feel better, she understands. they were both put in each other's way so that they could grow. they needed that time to be hurt and get better and be ready for when they meet their real soulmate. the one that won't hurt them, that won't make them cry themselves to sleep for months.
so she goes on. she lets go of barney, or at least she tries. her time is coming. it's a sunny afternoon, and it's been two years since she saw him. she feels better. she feels whole. she feels ready to love again, to love properly. to meet her soulmate. she's got a couple of minutes left, and she sits in a cafe with a book, stealing glances at the countdown until it's only a minute, and there's footsteps behind her and she just can't bring herself to turn around because suddenly her heart is shrinking inside her because this is wrong she doesn't want to meet her soulmate she doesn't want anyone else she wants barney this is all a big mistake and there's tears at the corners of her eyes when her timer gets to zero and she shuts them tightly because this is not what she wanted.
"i knew it would be you."
she laughs, because it's the only thing she can manage to do. barney wasn't right for her at all.Â
but he is now.

the room is completely silent, and the matchmaker that's installing the timer can't help but crack a smile at the contrast between the two of them. julia's wide, hopeful grin as she watches him work. ian's look of complete terror and impending doom.
it sets off right away. it doesn't even show numbers, it just goes crazy, his and julia's. he laughs a little hysterically, relief washing all over him, and she kisses him breathless.
"you can never ever say anything about how i deserve better now. you're exactly what i deserve."

rachel's starts counting down the minute they install it.
maxx doesn't speak to anyone for a whole day after that. he just stares at the blank watch on his wrist.

in a school as full of posh kids as hers, sweet sixteen has turned into a whole new experience ever since it became the day you got your timer installed. and her started counting down the moment they put in on her wrist, so she goes the whole way to school grinning at it, because she's going to meet her soulmate at school. on her birthday. it couldn't be more perfect.
she gets out of the car and is instantly surrounded by her friends, all jumping around excitedly. every boy in school seems to be looking at her, but her timer keeps counting down and her heart is beating so hard she can't hear her own thoughts. her prince is going to be there any minute now, and maybe it will be a senior. maybe someone with an actual car, that cute guy from Chem she's been desperately crushing on for weeks now.
ten, nine. she bites her lip excitedly, her friends clearing up the path. eight, seven. nothing's happening, and she starts walking to the door, when she sees him and her face falls. six, five. he's steps away, and he's grinning at her so widely she wishes she could bury herself in those stupid dimples and never come out again because this cannot be happening again. four, three. there's no way. but he's smiling, and his timer is counting down too, and he knew. he fucking knew all along. two, one. they stand in front of each other, dylan smiling as if it was his birthday and not hers, lottie frowning and crossing her arms.
"i'm suing the company."Â
it's all she says before she walks away from him, but his smile doesn't falter at all, because yeah. he did know it.

now that they have jobs, they can afford it. and if jamie won't buy one for himself then they'll do it for him. they're all sitting at the kitchen table, penny going on and on about how she's got this really cool friend from work who connor should totally get to know and she's sorry it didn't work with his last blind date but this girl is truly amazing, and connor just can't bring himself to say anything, just keeps tapping his fingers on the table as he waits because he heard jamie was getting off work soon and really the only reason he keeps hanging out here is so he can get a glimpse of that pretty boy.
the door opens and both penny and colin forget all about him, running to get to jamie, nearly shoving the timer around his wrist without even explaining.
"mine has started counting down already and colin's-"
"i thought you were straight" is all connor says as he stares from across the room, all other voices gone mute at the incredibly loud noise their timers are making.
"i thought you were straight" says colin back, and connor sighs deeply, but smiles because well, that's sorted then.
