Inside-Outside: X-ray self portrait series by Dilek Öztürk
"I created a series of self portraits combined with my own x-rays during my MFA Degree project. The project starts with the idea of searching a new aesthetic to reveal human body. Eventually the layers of the body overlapped perfectly and revealed what is there upon the skin and underneath the skin. Now, the next step is going to form in the extensions of the skin and the space."
Dilek Ă–ztĂĽrk, born in 1983, Istanbul.
MFA Degree in Visual Communication Design.
Currently living and working in Istanbul, Turkey.

I LOVE SCIENCE
On this day 119 years ago, a German physicist changed the world forever by discovering, quite by accident, a new type of ray. As the type of ray was unknown, Röntgen temporarily called it an “x-ray”, the mathematical designation for the unknown.
From airport security to identifying underdrawings in paintings, X-rays have had a varied use over time, the scope of which could not have been imagined by its inventor. Perhaps most strangely, the X-ray was popular in shoe shops until the 1970s, in order to find the perfect fitting shoe.
The discovery of the X-ray has had a massive impact on the medical field, which is what the International Day of Radiology, held on 8th November every year, celebrates. This year is dedicated to brain imaging and radiology’s important role in combating brain diseases. See what you could learn by exploring our special collection of journals, books, and online resources which have been made free to access to mark the occasion.

Renal connections to the urinary system and the vessels of the hepatic parenchyma
[Remember: Renal = Kidney and Hepatic = Liver]
The liver, like most organs, has a stroma, which is the connective tissue that provides structure, and a parenchyma, which is the functional part of the organ.
The parenchyma of the liver is highly vascularized, and hepatocytes form lobules (the filtering units) in hexagonal groups, centered around a central vein. These veins, arteries, and bile ducts (leading to and from the gall bladder -Â the balloon seen in the bottom center of the image) facilitate the processing of foods and toxins from the intestines.
In general, the liver is extremely good at its job - paired with the kidneys’ ability to filter the general blood supply, we’ve evolved to process almost all environmental and ingested toxins that are presented to us in our day-to-day lives. After all, we could never have eaten raw meat and survived on dirty roots for most of our evolutionary history without that.
While some conditions, such as cirrhosis and renal failure inhibit our ability to process environmental toxins, adding “detoxification” scams to what your body has to process can actually harm, more than help. There are already established and effective medical procedures and diets for those with genuine organ troubles.

Baroque Period Anatomical Wax Model
Venerina - Anatomical Venus 1780-1782

Anatomical Venus - 19th c. Wax
This is an x-ray of a 79 yo man who had lost weight and was being evaluated for swallowing difficulties. During the process of having him rapidly swallow barium (dense element that allows one to visualize structures), he aspirated the barium into his lungs. This led to respiratory failure.
The x-ray showed barium into both right and left main stem bronchi in the left upper and lower lobes. The barium spread to the smaller airways which produced the tree-in-bud appearance (arrow). This patient had the barium suctioned out (as much as possible), but he developed shock, his heart stopped beating and he suffered severe brain injury. He died a short time later.
