We sense it now, we feel the threat in our blood. Something terrible is coming. And we must all be ready. All of us.
the fact that i'm no longer the same age as the protagonists of novels and films i once connected to is so heartbreaking. there was a time when I looked forward to turning their age. i did. and i also outgrew them. i continue to age, but they don't; never will. the immortality of fiction is beautiful, but cruel.
Something I think about a lot is how carefully SM tried to make it so that Bella couldn't really be 'blamed' for anything. I'm not sure I'm articulating that right. But it came up the other day with the ask about the top five things that don't make sense and the tent scene.
It seems to me that SM found herself surprisingly interested in the Jacob/Bella dynamic. That was never part of her original plan; remember, she wrote Twilight and then Forever Dawn (which was basically had all the same plot points as Breaking Dawn eventually did). She had already written E/B's wedding, birth of Renesmee, Bella being a vampire. Jacob was just a family friend with a minor crush. But it's pretty clear he took on a life of his own in the middle books that SM had not originally planned for and my theory has always been that SM liked the idea of Jacob/Bella but not as much as the Edward/Bella endgame she had literally already written. So what to do? She wants them to kiss, so she makes Jacob force himself on Bella so that Bella is blameless. She wants them to snuggle, so she puts them in a cold tent where Bella literally needs Jacob's body heat so Bella is blameless. She wants them to kiss again, so Jacob threatens getting himself killed, so Bella is blameless.
And none of the Cullens seem at all bothered by whatever is going on with her and Jacob, and they don't have the details because Alice can't see him. It would be natural for some of them to be like, "uhhhhh, what? Is she cheating on Edward?" but no! She is innocent and blameless and they all (except Rosalie) adore her! Part of the family already! Don't even worry about it! Alice even says something like "wow it must be hard to have two good options" like she is a neutral observer and one of the options isn't her brother. They aren't even bothered by her making Edward, the only mind-reader and the only one who can communicate with the wolves when they are in wolf form, sit out the fight to the death that their relationship caused. They're cool with it. Because no one can resent Bella for anything, and if they do, they're bad.
And then we have Breaking Dawn. Bella's been begging for vampirism for awhile now, but maybe wanting immortality and power and beauty might be selfish? Can't have that. She's dying in childbirth. Now it's not just an emergency transformation to save her life, she's sacrificing herself for someone else. She's absolved, and so is Edward.
Even with silly stuff, like the clothes and parities. It might be selfish of Bella to want those things, so she doesn't, but Alice just gives them to her anyway.
It's okay for your protagonist to be selfish sometimes! It's okay for them to be blamed for stuff! Let Bella be messy and take the blame! It's okay.
āI love her more than anything in the world, more than my own life, andāby some miracleāshe loves me that way, too.ā

thinking abt everyone who bellaās been lying to:
1. charlie
2.
3.
4.
5.
me: i just think that if smeyer respected her native characters to the point of actually developing them to be independent rather than the polar opposite of the cullens (and therefore highlight the cullensā idealistic whiteness), then she wouldāve made leah a good foil for bella. you know what i mean? they have parallel stories! theyāre the same age and both of their first boyfriends/loves of their lives ended up being supernatural creatures, thus throwing both of the teen girls into the supernatural world. in fact, edward and his familyās presence are the reason why sam ended up phasing at all! both bella and leah were dumped by their supernatural bfs for mysterious reasons, but smeyer portrayed their reactions as obvious opposites. bella, while facing criticism from tertiary characters like jessica, was portrayed as the ārightā way to cope with heartbreak: catatonic, quiet, etc. bellaās close friends (jacob and angela) gave her sympathy in the wake of her heartbreak. but leah was portrayed angry and very open about her negative feelings (similarly to rosalie). however, leah was deemed a shrew for her heartbreak by those close to her (also jacob, basically the whole wolf pack, etc) despite her anger being a valid reaction to being suddenly dumped by her bf of several years. for her cousin!!! if smeyer thought to develop leah as more than the bitter, angry, loud, undesirable-by-her-peers yet āexotically beautifulā brown girl, then bella and leah have potentially found solace in each other in reaction to their respective experiences with heartbreak, or at least openly acknowledge that the cullens and their lifestyle played a large part in changing leahās life for the negative while bella aspired to join their lifestyle and her life improved tenfold once she did. if smeyer gave leah more character development beyond a heartbreaking and unfair backstory used to explain away jacob imprinting on renegade, the series would have improved that much more. then again, smeyer would never admit her white protagonistsā wrongdoings past new moon, and she would never acknowledge that leahās presence as a character often undermines bellaās motivations by highlighting her selfishness. this would therefore highlight the fact that bella serves as a self-insert for smeyer and i donāt think she would ever acknowledge that either, unfortunately.
girl at the bar: i think i see my friends
can we talk about renesmee?
this has been bugging me for a while and i donāt see a lot of posts about it, which frustrates me to no end.
renesmee was created solely so jacob could get a happy ending, and thatās disgusting. from someone who was sexually abused as a child, i canāt sit and watch the breaking dawn movies without skipping over every single scene that involves jacob ābabysittingā or being near baby renesmee because itās just too uncomfortable for me. and i have no idea how hollywood or publishers let that plot line go.
maybe to some, the idea of your ātrue loveā being your first love and waiting for someone is romantic, but not when itās a child and a full grown adult. renesmee is a baby, no matter how fast she grows, sheās a literal child and to make matters worse, is being groomed into loving only jacob romantically from a young age by the āpowerā of imprinting. she never got a choice when it came to love interests, because really, if jacob hadnāt imprinted on her as a baby, would she still grow up to be āin loveā with him? probably not. and to make matters worse, jacob is always around her as a child, always with her. do any of the cullens find this unsettling at all? rosalie, a survivor of a brutal sexual assault, shows no concern throughout the movie. edward cullen, the father of this baby, is perfectly fine with the plan to have jacob run away with her if all else fails. even bella, after the initial āfightā scene, seems to have let it go, for the most part. carlisle, esme, jasper, emmett, alice...nobody shows signs of concern when it comes to this ābondā, (i will be damned before i call it a relationship.) of sorts. now, iām not saying that they should be concerned about jacob abusing this privilege in anyway, i personally donāt think that jacob would ever do anything to harm renesmee especially as a child. but itās still concerning when you realize, that this grown man will one day find this chid sexually attractive and is just waiting until sheās (hopefully, but i wouldnāt doubt if they allowed a relationship earlier) eighteen to start a romantic and intimate relationship.
not only that, but renesmeeās excuse of ābeing part vampire so she grows fasterā is obviously just so nobody finds this revolting. and this trait makes her a tragic character, if you think about it, because renesmee will never have a ānormalā childhood. by the end of the movies, sheās already around 8-9 years old physically, meaning that, sheās already missed out on half of her schooling and hasnāt been able to socialize with any children her age. she grew up too fast to enjoy cartoons, dolls, imaginary friends and every other joy that comes with a childhood. that is, if weāre to assume that she continues to age like that after the movies have ended. to make matters worse, even her mental age seems to be progressing at a concerning degree, sheās obviously very wise for a kid her age, being able to approach aro with calmness and grace. not too mention, all of this mental progression has happened during a time of war. she practically grew up watching people spar and talk of plans to destroy the volturi, whilst also knowing full well that the volturi are after her. imagine, all of the necessary growth that happens in your childhood years, happening with all of this going on.
sheāll also never experience what other people get to, most likely. growing so fast, elementary school and middle school are out of the question. sheāll never know what itās like to have a shy boy ask her to dance at a school formal, or what itās like to make friends on the playground and the excitement that comes with class pets, ice cream days, girl scouts ect... sheāll never get to a point and be able to figure her sexuality out on her own, or find out what she likes in people and doesnāt like. because everything has been programmed to be jacob by that point. sheāll never get to feel the butterflies of that one person asking her to homecoming or the nauseating but beautiful nerves that come with a first date, because sheās known jacob all her life, so why be nervous to begin with? and why say yes to the boy with the sweet smile asking you to homecoming, when youāre programmed to believe that itāll ābreak jakeās heartā? sheāll never get to make friends the same way we do, because thereās that caution that comes with being half vampire. and who knows if sheāll even be able too, seeing as her age progression makes it hard for her to stay at one solid age for too long?
sheāll experience everything that we do in eighteen years, in what? five? six? seven? that, to me, is heartbreaking. even if sheās just a character, weāre meant to feel for them and to care about them, and yet, all iāve ever felt for her was pity. pity for a childhood that sheāll never get to have. pity for milestones that sheāll never get to experience. pity for the choice and freedom that was stripped from her before she was even able to know what those things are. she was branded an imprint before she could develop a personality, morals, standards. before she could develop her orientation and decide what she wanted for herself. all because smeyer wanted to give jake a happy ending. but what about nessieās? would this girl want any of this, if she were old enough to understand and WASNāT bound to him by imprint? we all know that she wonāt ever have a choice in the matter, because now itās either, be with jake or suffer with depression and a slowly deteriorating health (if imprinting is the same as a vampiresā mate bond, which we were lead to believe) like bella once had. which will be even harder on her because she was always with jake growing up. it wasnāt a short time period like bella and edward, it was her entire life, so whoās to say separation wouldnāt be worse on her?
all in all, renesemee is the saddest character in twilight, simply because she never had a choice.
I am so, so angry to learn that all of the awful racism in regards to the Quileutes was only because Meyer didn't want Edward to just tell Bella that he's a vampire. She bastardized a living, real tribe and included countless examples of harmful stereotypes because she couldn't be bothered to think of ANY OTHER WAY that Bella could learn about Edward. THE ENTIRE (APPROPRIATED, FAKE) TRIBE IS JUST A PLOT DEVICE TO KEEP EDWARD FROM ACTUALLY **TALKING** TO HIS SUPPOSED TRUE LOVE.
In the interest of fairness and not putting words in SMās mouth, hereās the relevant passage:
And itās just like . .. there are about 100 different ways she could have done this that A) (and most importantly!!!!) respected the Quileute tribe (not use them at all! reached out to them! her publishing company hiring a consultant during the editing process to work through some issues! not changed their legends! removed the supernatural aspect from the story!) and B) not made her protagonists look like callous jerks by coming back to a place they knew people were terrified of them and didnāt want them there.Ā
It would have been so cool to have some good Native American representation in a wildly popular YA book without all the lack of free will and animalistic stuff that fed into harmful stereotypes. Maybe thereās no werewolf stuff, Jacobās just the kid of a family friend, but has heard stories from his father and grandfather about, I donāt know, if you want to make the Cullens look good, a yellow-eyed doctor with cold hands who helped with an outbreak of something in the 1930s. If you want them to look neutral, a yellow-eyed hunter in the woods who Ephraim once saw kill a bear with his bare hands (or teeth). If you want to make them look bad, a story about an unsolved murder and the one witness reported a big, curly-haired, yellow-eyed man being involved (one of Emmettās bloodsingers, maybe? Then it would be parallel to Edwardās experience with Bella) or like . . . again, 100 different ways to include Jacob as a contemporary native character that didnāt play onĀ āmagical Indianā orĀ āanimalistic nativeā stereotypes and didnāt re-write a real tribeās history or legends. Jacob just happens to know a FAMILY story, not an appropriated/re-writtenĀ cultural one, because his family (and Charlieās) have lived in the area for a long time.Ā
I don't think we as a society are ever gonna improve on vampires. they're a metaphor for the monarch class they're a metaphor for capitalism they're a metaphor for disease they're a metaphor for addiction they're a metaphor for trauma they're a metaphor for disability they're a metaphor for breaking from tradition they're a metaphor for a hot woman who bites your tit what CAN'T they do

what she says: im okay
what she means: in the final installment of the twilight saga, the twilight saga: breaking dawn - part 2 (2012), how was alice cullen able to have a vision of renesmee cullen and jacob black in the future? ?? the entire conflict concerning bella, edward, and alice in the second half of the twilight saga: new moon (2009) was that alice saw bella jump off a cliff but didnt see jacob save her because heās a werewolf, so edward assumed bella was dead. ??? ?and then in the twilight saga: breaking dawn - part 1 (2011) alice didnt see bellas future after bella got pregnant on her honeymoon because renesmee is a vampire-human hybrid. ?????? according to the logic in the book alice shouldnt be able to have visions of species other than vampire and human because shes only been a vampire and a human.? and then all of a sudden in the final chapter of the twilight saga alice can see jacob AND renesmee 10+ years into the future????????i havent slept since november 2012
tbh, New Moon ending with "Edward came back, and i snapped out of my crippling depression :)" feels scarier than actually healing from your severe mental illness. how terrifying would it be to spend six months slogging through hell, then suddenly waking up in your fairytale wonderland like nothing happened? i'd be clawing at the walls waiting for the other shoe to drop. idk how you can look at the love of your life & not wonder whether he was real, or a memory, or a delusion. are you dead? dying? asleep? crazy? if so, to what extent? when he goes hunting, can you be sure he was real? when he follows you to class, does he feel like a ghost? when you dream, do you dream of the real Edward? the past Edward? or the hallucination? where did the pain that reminded you you were alive go? why do you suddenly have an appetite after wasting away to skin and bones? even Bella "I'm good with weird" Swan has her limits, and tbh "my soulmate, who weaponized my worst insecurities & sent me into a psychosis-level depression, is finally back and i am Cured" seems like a mind-breaking denial of reality. her whole life changed overnight in the best way - and she's telling us she has no scars from the dark? hmm

Okay but how fun would it be if Bellaās clumsiness and bad luck was not only a danger to herself but to others too
Like yeah yeah we got her accidentally hitting Mike with a volleyball in the first movie but I want a running gag where itās like āthank god she only ever hangs out with indestructible immortals.ā If Edward wasnāt impervious heād have been seriously maimed/burned/crushed/stabbed fifty times over within the first six months of them dating.
She turns around in the kitchen while holding a knife not realizing heās behind her, and if he were human sheād have just gutted him, but as it is his shirt is the only casualty. You know sheās hit him with her truck at least 3x; Edward laughs it off but one time he doesnāt have time to smooth the bumper out before Charlie gets home, so they have to make up a story. Etc.
These are some of the only times Edward is happy about being a vampire. Forget bulletproof, heās Bellaproof. Instead of receiving life-threatening injuries he just gets to see Bellaās adorable mortified blushing every time the universe tries to half-assedly Final Destination him for associating with her
