Meow. MEW! Meow. MEW! Meow. MEW!
Mum helping her young, probably still blind, kitten across the room.
Hugh Hefner was a giant in publishing, journalism, free speech and civil rights. He was a true original and very progressive, and decades ahead of the rest of the U.S. He always hired African Americans at a competitive and fair wage. Hef insisted on interracial casting of his TV show, even when Southern stations threatened to boycott. Hef was the first.
Hefner long before he became sort of a doddering caricature was a STRONG voice for Civil rights and free speech issues. RIP Hugh.
I saw a post calling him a sicko not too long ago.. I didn’t even know Hugh was truly a legend/amazing ally ahead of his time. Rest in Peace, Hef.
Alright, friends, I’m going to do something that I don’t usually do! I’m going to make a giant ass comment that’s gonna get me shat on but I don’t care. Y’all just seem to have historical amnesia just like you do for MOST exploitative rich men. Hugh Hefner is the fucking devil. A person who ‘does right’ because it’s profitable and good for his image is NOT a good person, and some people are having a difficult time conceptualizing that. The man was a fucking pedophile! He used underage girls - “In 1975 Playboy Press published nude photographs of 10-year-old Brooke Shields. The photographer, who took them with parental consent, described his subject as ‘the first prepubescent sex symbol in the world’ and prints of his portraits soon became highly sought after and very expensive.“ — Ian O’Donnell & Claire Milner Child Pornography: Crime, Computers & Society And in an international issue, there was an 11 year old girl posed nude and covered in makeup as well. Don’t even get me started on the shit with Dorothy Stratten. She was underage and was tricked and manipulated into doing photoshoots and those photos (as well as access to her body) was sold to Hefner and he molested her. Are y’all also going to forget how he has historically and to his fucking death treated the playmates? COUNTLESS women came forward talking about how they were wooed into becoming bunnies and getting into his house (and his clubs) only to find out that there were restrictions on every aspect of their lives (including their bodies and personal lives - no boyfriends, curfews, etc.) and they were coerced into sex with him, each other, and also (noted by Linda Lovelace as well as many playmates) dogs. He would keep 7 or more women in his house at a time that are completely at his disposal and that are completely reliant on him for their livelihood. If they left, where were they to go? He KNEW he had that kind of power and he abused it - much like MOST of the porn industry. This is not new. Women said they felt trapped and like they were fucking prisoners. He would pimp them out to his friends, give them qualudes, and generally treated them like shit. Holly Madison wrote an ENTIRE BOOK about the shit that went on in that house and no one listened, just like no one listened to the numerous women before her either - because Hef is ‘fun’, ‘sexy’, and ““““““progressive”“““““““““““““ and no one wants to critique something they enjoy even if it means someone is facing the consequences for it. These women are manipulated and used. Hefner would treat them with “respect and decency” until they were no longer of value - and value being either beautiful or profitable. In the year of 1963, Gloria Steinem went undercover to discover what it was like to be a bunny at these so called ‘iconic’ night clubs’. (http://dlib.nyu.edu/undercover/sites/default/files/documents/uploads/editors/Show-A%20Bunny%27s%20Tale-Part%20One-May%201963.pdf) she noted how poorly they were treated, they got demerits for not wearing high heels, they had to arch their back certain ways when standing, they had to give up half of their tips, and much much more. And that’s just in the clubs. This vile creature has been given credit for the “sexual revolution” and to be quite frank, what he sold was no where near that or else he would have sold pictures of men as well, would’ve had more than just busty, thin, young women, and generally wouldn’t have been as shitty. What he sold was a fantasy - a fantasy of women being objects that are for for his consumption (and men in general), usable, and disposable. When one gets old and tired, don’t worry, there’s a newer, younger, and more palatable woman that he can use for his profit. This man made MILLIONS off of this fantasy and women’s bodies. Do you think any of the playmates received even a FRACTION of what he earned? I could honestly go on and on and on, so no, he was not “an ally”, he was not “ahead of his time”, he was a man who did things to protect his image and say “oh? how can you call me a bad man when I’ve done this and this???” Like no… donating a small fraction of the millions of dollars you make from exploitation and by saying “Hey! Gays are people too!” does not absolve him from everything he’s done. Fuck that noise.

Pen Dips - A Daily Writing Schedule for the Month of October (A.K.A. An Alternative to Inktober Because You Don’t Want to Draw Every Day)
Write at least a 300-word response to the designated suggestion every day. Post your responses on Tumblr! Share with the community; encourage productivity for this lovely month! Choose different characters, or make your own in the process of it. Enjoy, fellow authors!
1) Choose a character. What do they smell like? (If you do not fulfill the 300-word count, add another character in!)
2) Choose a location, be it fictional or real, from your own imagination or from another’s. Wait until you are hungry. Then, describe the most stereotypical yet high-quality meal that place could possibly provide.
3) Prompt: your character is now a vengeful wraith.
4) Change the genre of your current story, or a story that you are currently reading/watching. Make it as humorous as possible.
5) How does your character walk? What do their footsteps sound like?
6) You are forced to clasp onto your character’s hands. The reason why is a scenario for you to figure out. What do their hands feel like?
7) The most important location in your world has just been destroyed. What happens?
8) Begin your story with this sentence: “It wasn’t my fault.”
9) Your character is humorously upset over something entirely unimportant. What is it, and how do others react? How out-of-hand does the situation become?
10) Begin your story with this sentence: “Spit that out.”
11) Capture a moment of utter peace in the autumn afternoon.
12) Your character has been handed a child that looks nothing like them, but everyone insists that it is their child.
13) A child wanders into a pumpkin field and meets a peculiar fellow. What happens?
14) Your character has become bound to an enchanted forest by a witch. They cannot leave. What happens?
15) Your character’s soul has been bound to a cat via a curse. What happens?
16) Your character has just obtained the one thing that they’ve always wanted. What changes?
17) Your character has just become a tyrannical dictator of your story. What happens?
18) Create an original vampiric character. They can be any race, gender, religion, fantasy creature, vegetational entity, etc. Introduce them as you would in a beginning of a story.
19) A werewolf is running rabid in a lone town. What happens?
20) Begin your story with this sentence: “I can’t feel my legs.”
21) Prompt: There are stairs. An endless, winding well of stairs, going up and up and up. And I can’t get out.
22) A witch has granted your character a single potion of their choosing. What will they choose?
23) Prompt: a baking disaster involving autumn foods.
24) Prompt: There is something hidden below that massive pile of leaves.
25) Prompt: It is not water falling out of those clouds.
26) Choose a character. What feature of theirs do they express the most emotion through? The eyes? The hands? The lips?
27) Your character’s form begins to flake away, like dead leaves off of a tree. What is happening?
28) A small black cat is now under the ownership of your main character. Write this encounter through the cat’s point of view.
29) Hot, pumpkin-flavored tea can make others feel a bit hotter than they’re wont to be. Write a romance scene involving pumpkin-flavored beverages.
30) The entire landscape of your main town has been transformed. In what way? How do the characters react?
31) Your main villain is given a single candy. They do not know who it is from. What happens?
Found this reddit post. This kinda makes me feel better. And it’s something I think about sometimes because I always feel like regardless of how hard I work on something I don’t get anywhere.
Nice summary. If you’re curious, the anon here is referring to studies over the last decade that have pointed to major impacts on pattern separation with depression, and how depression can have major impacts on nonsynaptic plasticity.
Psychology is amazing folks and more of it needs to be common knowledge
YOUR BRAIN IS AN ORGAN AND DEPRESSION IS A REAL PHYSICAL THING THAT HAPPENS TO IT. THIS IS REALLY SUPER IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER.
Yeah your brain literally isn’t making the corrections and selections it’s meant to when you’re depressed - dean Burnett has a very accessible & plain English section on that in “the idiot brain” (is the last chapter)
I find this really helpful (which is a bit odd, because generally I’m not one for the totally chemical approach, given meds not helping me much) I wish my diagnosis person had told me about this when I was freaking out about my loss of ability to learn/pick up new things. It had not occurred to me that it could be part of the depression package.
(Original comment.)
This is a useful reminder right now.
Okay, but let’s take a minute to appreciate how this means that the people who climb all up on your ass about being a pessimist are, in fact, douchebags, because this is evidently something that you cannot help. Like, you can’t just choose to look on the bright side. You literally can’t. You need actual help.
(Points deducted for the old “exercise and meditation” thing, I’ve found exercise to be of limited usefulness, good short-term but useless for actual management of a major mental illness, and meditation is bad for some people and unbearably goddamn boring for many others, but ymmv.)

GUYS! So I was looking through my screencaps from Eden Prime, deleting the extra ones, and I noticed something. Check out Saren’s eyes/implants at the beginning of the scene where he confronts Nihlus. None of them are lit, and his eyes are a light grey. Check out his eyes/implants when he shoots Nihlus. BOTH are gluing blue, the same color blue that you can see on the husk on the spike in the background. Look at his chest, it’s lit up like a Christmas tree! …Did Sovereign take control of Saren physically?!
Instant headcanon!!!!
5 Ways to Beat Loneliness
1. First, don’t isolate yourself – When you’re feeling lonely it is hard to go out and be with others who seem to be OK, and don’t really notice how lonely you feel. But putting up a wall and withdrawing from your friends will only intensify that sense of loneliness, and will further undermine your self-esteem.
2. Second, keep yourself busy – Do things that you normally enjoy with others. For example, listening to a band or maybe going to watch a game … or you could always try something that’s new, but interests you! That would allow you to connect in a non-threatening way … as it takes the focus off talking, and off you.
3. Third, be kind to yourself - It’s likely that you regularly beat yourself up, criticise yourself and are unrealistic in the kinds of expectations that you have for yourself. So what, if it goes wrong? You can always try again – just learn what you can from the experience. And notice your successes and the times when it goes well. It’s likely that this happens a lot more than you think!
4. Fourth, recognise that we ALL battle loneliness at times - You’re not some kind of freak – it’s actually quite normal. It something we’ve all known and understand.
5. Fifth, talk to someone you like and trust – It can really help to talk about your feelings with a family member, a friend or counsellor. It relieves some of the painful sense of isolation – and help to get your life back in perspective again.
Why complicate Life
1. Missing somebody – Call.
2. Wanna meet up – Invite.
3. Wanna be understood – Explain.
4. Have questions – Ask.
5. Don’t like something - Speak up.
6. Like something – Share it.
7. Want something - Ask for it.
8. Love someone – Tell them.
We only have one life. Keep it simple.
Having a low opinion of yourself is not modesty. It’s self-destruction.

An intimate relationship does not banish loneliness. Only when we are comfortable with who we are can we truly function in a healthy way.
Patricia Fry (via onlinecounsellingcollege)
The Problem with Over-Thinking
1. It increases your anxiety, your worry, and your dread.
2. It makes you feel confused, so that it’s really hard to think.
3. It can blind you to “the obvious”, and what is best for you.
4. It can keep you feeling stuck so you wait too long to act.
5. It can interfere with hearing what your heart says you should do.
6. Thus, it can limit your success as you’re afraid to take that step!
Trauma shatters your most basic assumptions about yourself and your world - “Life is good,” “I’m safe,” “People are kind,” “I can trust others,” “The future is likely to be good” - and replaces them with feelings like “The world is dangerous,” “I can’t win,”“I can’t trust other people …”

The worst loneliness is to not be comfortable with yourself.
