going through armand withdrawal....whatever man.
Okay, so riffing on other people's posts about Eridians being ambush predators versus humans being persistence predators: do you think that affects how Rocky and Grace behaved in the "Blip-A detected" scene?
Grace POV: The other ship is patiently, steadily approaching me, clearly not giving up or pretending to ignore me politely, following my every move and not letting up and not letting me get too far away from it... Oh No. I Am Being Hunted. Run Away!!!
Rocky POV: I am making no attempt to conceal myself or make myself sound like something I'm not, and I'm not trying to trick or lure the other ship into coming closer to me of its own volition, and I'm not constructing any kind of physical trap. I am approaching as obviously as I can, at a steady pace. I am being So Fucking Friendly :D

i need everyone to get into college football right now i am dying to talk about the texas tech situation. this is the kind of thing that will be referenced for the next 100 years. there will be documentaries and biopics about this.
no one asked but here
texas tech's quartback, brendan sorsby, was investigated for sports gambling. i know sports betting is all the rage right now, but athletes themselves are not allowed to do it. it is Rule Number 1 and it is the highest priority rule for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), who governs all athletic programs at about 1,100 colleges in the US.
the invesitagetion of sorsby revealed that, not only did he place more than 9,000 sports bets when he himself was a collegiate athlete, but 40 of those bets were AGAINST HIS OWN TEAM when he was playing at indiana university. immediately, this threatens the integrity of the sport, and especially because indiana is the hottest team right now as the defending national champion.
the NCAA, which is largely a sham organization these days (they've truly lost their grasp and college athletics are the wild west now) actually enforced their Number 1 Rule and told sorsby his career is over, that he would never play college football again (and, subsequently, that he would never get drafted into the NFL because his college career was cut short).
well, because the NCAA is a husk of its former self, sorsby and texad tech immediately took this to court. MANY athletes have learned these past few seasons that if you can find a judge who's a fan of your team, you can get any NCAA ruling overturned. that's exactly what texas tech did. they filed a suit in Lubbock, where the university is located and where every judge is an alum of texas tech. so sorsby was granted an injunction and will now only be suspended for the first 2 games od the 2026 season (which are alwayd against no-name teams that will be destroyed regardless of who's suspended).
every other school in the country immediately went on the defensive because this is a very clear integretiy issue. so nebraska and georgia (sic em dawgs) released statements saying that all currently-scheduled competitions witb Texas Tech in ANY sport will be canceled and there will be no future schedulings. at least 3 of the major conferences (SEC, Big 10, Big 12) , who account for almost all division 1 sports teams in the country, are also in discussions about cancelling comtests. Texas Tech is part of the Big 12, and there is serious talk of all other teams in the conference shutting texas tech out.
now would probably be time where i say that texas tech is one of the wealthiest programs in college football becaise there is a single billionaire alumnus pouring money into the program with hopes of essentially buying a championship. so texas techs integrity has always been questionable. anyway, the university president put oit a statement that he doesnt care that sorseby violated regulation and that texas tech will sue any school that refuses to play them because it jeopardizes their championship prospects if they're umable to play any games.
this is all just startomg but its so juicy and delicious. the NCAA is going to crumble to dust if they cannot get this injunction overturned. schools like georgia and nebraska have plenty of money so a suit isnt necessarily a concern, but this will absolutely change college football forever. i cant stop reading about it.
update on this: texas tech is claiming that every school who has/is considering cancelling all contests is "afraid" that texas tech is better than them. what's funny about this is that sorsby's stats are average. he is not good enough for this kind of protection. many schools who have already cancelled or are considering it have much better quarterbacks than sorsby. also, texas tech's head coach had said that it's actually ok that sorsby bet against his own team because it "its not murder or assault."
the attorney general of texas has threatened to investigate the Big 12 conference if they sanction Texas Tech
the claim is now that texas texh university just cares so much about brendan sorsbys mental health that they have to sue everyone who calls this an integrity violation. any other school who wouldnt defend an athlete that committed this violation "doesnt care about mental health"
(confidently) no, that's a self-tolling bell. it tolls automatically, signifying nothing for the hearer. why

INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE | THE VAMPIRE LESTAT — 3.02 “Toledo”
INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE | Season 3, Episode 2, "Toledo"
i craft
the eva stratt in my mind is a conglomeration of movie stratt and book stratt because god fucking bless sandra huller put her entire pussy into that performance, but while weir is bad at character writing (women especially) he IS disconcertingly good at coming up with plots that generate interesting character concepts through circumstances... which due to story cuts the movie sadly missed out on.
it's really interesting looking back at both iterations of the story and how stratt and grace's rapport hinges on unrequitedness. there's obviously the karaoke scene in the movie acting as grace's bid for human connection vs stratt's necessary refusal in order to do her job. the book rarely if ever interrogates stratt's interpersonal relationships in the project and how her sense of duty and utilitarianism extends to them (well, aside from grace. more on that in a sec). She's a History major and an administrator and She Loves Humanity, but it's a characteristic that when analyzed deeper rings pretty hollow (possibly because the author thinks social analysis/critique in science fiction is stupid and thus doesn't exactly have much to say about People like someone in the humanities would. SAD!) so that's an addition to her character from the movie that i'm deeply pleased about. what i don't like as much is that the bid for connection starts from grace.
because book stratt and grace? the one sidedness of their rapport is the driving emotional conflict of the entire pre-launch plotline—and of grace's character development throughout the whole book.
like most scientists on the team, grace was brought onto the project by force, but he's the only one who fulfilled his purpose, was allowed to return to his own life, and then came back of his own volition, out of a sense of personal duty and responsibility. which is the reason stratt takes him back on! and why she begins to rely on him more and more, as an administrator, as a mediator, as a scientist, as an advisor. she has all the more reason to do that when she discovers he's coma resistant, but she was already doing all that baby!
grace spends the rest of their relationship half-assing that sense of responsibility. one thing i adore about book phm is how merciless it is with grace's "modesty" "insecurity" and "social anxiety". children are easy to dote on. they're not stupid, obviously, but on an interpersonal level they're not your equal, they have no way to actually demand accountability from you and call your ass out. he doesn't actually think he's a failure, he's not blind he should know damn well he's not like the other scientists. "science lapdog", "ooo i'm just a little guy cmonnnn i'm just a middle school teacher", he downplays his own importance because if he genuinely grappled with the level of responsibility she holds him to towards the people in the project he'd run like a fucking dog.
he is a good man AND he is a coward. stratt's relationship with him verges on the tension between those coexisting truths. he is both someone she wants to respect but can't, someone she can rely on but has to act behind his back least he realizes. she WANTS them to be equals, she WANTS him to understand. on the day the hail mary is scheduled for launch she paces HIS prison cell like SHE'S the caged animal, trying to get through to the glimpse of the man she saw that day, the one who barged into an FBI guarded facility, looked atlas in the eye and told her scoot over, i'm carrying this with you. please understand why i'm doing this to you. please understand why i need you to be that fundamentally good man. i am tied to the tracks right next to you. and as far as she is concerned, ryland grace dies on earth saying "no".

they should make it illegal to end your story with an epilogue where your main female character is suddenly randomly married and has children when she's never once expressed a desire for this previously
people in the notes of this post being like "oh well it makes sense in canon why she would change her mind about wanting to start a family after the events of the conflict are over, there's a reason for it, let her have her happy ending." okay but fictional characters are not real people, they do not make these choices, their writers do. and those choices are not ideologically neutral, they stem from somewhere. and that place is misogyny in the cases where an author decides that becoming a wife and mother is The ideal happy ending for a woman. that's what the post is about, not a complaint that it's ooc or whatever (though it is often that too)
i feel like people in the notes don't really understand what i mean here. i'm not saying it can never make sense for a woman to have children in a story. there's a reason i mentioned an epilogue in the post (or an equivalent, some kind of time skip at the end of your story). what i really mainly have a problem with is relying on this trope as short hand for "The Nuclear Family = proof it's a Happy Ending :)" as if that's like. the only way you can show that? as if that is what marks whether or not a woman can be happy with her life? if you are showing a woman being happy with starting a family, you're allowed to do that, but it should absolutely not just be tacked on at the very end like this. bad and lazy writing at best, actively misogynistic at worst.
the example everyone is arguing for either side of in the notes is katniss from the hunger games (disclaimer that i haven't read the books in a long time so i don't exactly remember how it's handled, but i rewatched the movies recently and it sucks really bad there). sure, you can absolutely argue that this kind of ending makes sense for her. the reason she doesn't want kids throughout the story is because of the state of the world she lives in, so when the war is over, and she does have kids, that may very well be perfectly internally consistent with the world and her character. but that doesn't make this kind of writing any less lazy and misogynistic to me, because it's still a trope deployed simply to prove this peace to the reader, not actually grounded in exploring the character further or providing any real depth to this choice (hence it being kind of shoved in there at the very end). look, she's a wife and mother, that means she's happy now and the world is fixed! how else would we know? this is the thing all women really want deep down when their unfortunate circumstances aren't getting in the way of it, right?
