I think Winston Payne is an infinitely funnier character if he is genuinely an above board regular ass prosecutor. Not bigoted, not excessively cruel, not corrupt at all. There’s Nothing Wrong With Him He’s Just Annoying. He does his job well enough and there’s just no reason to fire him. Nobody likes him but like. After all the horrors the prosecutors office has dealt with they cannot afford to let go of someone with as spotless of a record as him. Winston is no more underhanded than any of the Moral Upstanding prosecutors— in fact as the tutorial prosecutor he’s relatively easy to combat. And one could argue that he’s decently effective in cases that aren’t against protagonists, earning the title of “rookie killer”.
