How to write friend groups
Keep the Group Size Manageable. Smaller groups are easier to develop. Limiting the cast ensures each friend has purpose, personality, and meaningful screen time.
Give Each Friend a Distinct Role. Clear roles (leader, caretaker, skeptic, wildcard) help readers instantly understand the group dynamic and avoid character blur.
Let Roles Shift Over Time. Roles should not be static. Stress, growth, and conflict allow characters to take control, fall apart, or step back when needed.
Avoid the Hive Mind. Friends should disagree. Conflicting values, fears, and goals create tension and make the group feel realistic.
Create Unique Pair Dynamics. Every relationship within the group should feel different. Best friends, rivals, quiet alliances, and emotional distance add depth.
Use Shared History as Subtext. Inside jokes, brief references, and old wounds imply years of connection without slowing the story down.
Show Loyalty Through Action. Friendship is proven through choices and sacrifices, not dialogue. Let characters risk something for one another.
Balance Spotlight Moments. Each friend should influence the plot in some way. Avoid turning side characters into background props.
Use Natural, Intimate Dialogue. Friends interrupt, tease, speak in shorthand, and say the wrong thing. Their dialogue should feel loose and lived-in.
Put the Group Under Pressure. Stress reveals cracks, loyalty, and priorities. Conflict tests whether the friendship can survive change.
Allow the Group to Evolve or Break. Friendships grow, fracture, or end. Knowing what holds the group togetherâand what could destroy itâadds emotional weight.
Give Each Member Personal Goals. Friends should want different things. Individual motivations prevent characters from existing only to support the protagonist.

people getting mad at ao3 for rightfully being firmly against censorship and allowing dark fics that depict taboo subjects in explicit details to be on their platform is so funny to me because ao3 was created specifically to be a fuck you to capitalism and censorship. the point of ao3 is that itâs a place to host and archive any fanwork, which includes fanwork about taboo topics that are not allowed on other platforms like wattpad or fanfiction.net
the whole point of ao3 is that itâs a safe space for all fics, and that includes fics about taboo subjects
ao3 has always been firmly against censorship since the day it was created, thatâs why itâs run by fans, for fans, on fansâ donations, why itâs a nonprofit organization, thatâs also why it has no ads or algorithms or any of those capitalism bullshit
if you have a problem with that, go to fanfiction.net or wattpad. no one forces you to stay in the house made specifically for the (affectionate) freaks

Government leaders âpardoningâ a turkey from the yearly slaughter implies a mass conspiracy of turkeys committing crimes. Of all your uncle's wild conspiracy theories, you thought that one would be the joke, not the one he got right.
Joseph was wrestling the big propane tank next to the pot of oil as his father prepped the turkey for deep frying.
"They don't want you to know the truth, Joseph," he said, a cigarette bobbing between his lips. "That whole White House pardon ceremony? A classic distraction. They create a patsy, to take the spotlight while the rest of the feathered syndicate operates with impunity."
He stabbed the injector needle of creole butter into the breast. "It's a deep-state poultry operation."
"Dad, don't smoke so close to the gas tank," Joseph said, hooking in the line.
Of all his fatherâs wild theories, the criminal turkey cabal was the one he dreaded every Thanksgiving. The speech hardly changed. The only new detail this year was the butter.
Dale lowered the bird into the oil. "They're organized, Joseph. They've got their claws in big agriculture. There's a reason why we only eat turkey once a yearâ"
A gobble-gobble cut him off.
Joseph turned. A turkey stood on the neighborâs fence, staring straight at his father. It gave a slow, deliberate wink, then hopped down into the alley and strutted toward them.
Dadâs cigarette fell from his lips. He went pale. "Code Red," he whispered, his voice tight. "They know we know."
The turkey let out a shrill cluck and launched itself from the fence. Dale screamed and bolted. For a man his age, he cleared the backyard fence with surprising grace, panic apparently improving his vertical jump.
"Save yourself!" He yelled from the other side.
Joseph blinked. The âassassinâ turkey was now calmly pecking at a spilled bag of seasoning, looking far too pleased with itself. It paused long enough to glance back at Dale and make a tiny throat-cutting gesture with its wing. Dale yelped and ducked.
âOh, good!â a voice called.
Kahn popped his head over his own fence, wearing an apron covered in cartoon turkey legs. âYou found my bird. We wanted the freshest turkey this year and it doesnât get fresher than this. Keep him thereâIâll come get him.â
