louis de pointe du lac breaks my heart because in so many ways his character is a story of the loss of community. the pilot of IWTV did such an incredible job at showcasing the fact that not only did louis once have a community, but he genuinely valued it. he is close with his siblings, helps his mother despite her blatant disapproval of him, and one of the happiest we ever see him in the entire show is when he dances with paul at grace‘s wedding, surrounded by familiar faces and laughing / having a good time with them. but by the end of that very same episode, he has lost every single support system he ever had. paul is dead, miss lily was killed, and so was the priest. as much as I love lestat, he systemically removes every safe space louis had so that he would be dependent on lestat and lestat alone for happiness and family and security.
and not only that— rooted in deep abandonment issues, lestat actively discourages and even prevents louis from having any real sense of community: he tells louis he can’t see his family anymore, throws such an extensive tantrum over Jonah that as far as we’ve been told louis didn’t have other outside sexual partners while he and lestat were together even though we KNOW lestat did, and repeatedly refuses to even TRY to understand the fact that it’s a lot easier to shrug off humanity and claim it doesn’t affect you anymore when you are white and privileged (things we have yet to see lestat take accountability for, mind you).
even at the end of s1, lestat and antoinette attempt to kill claudia and lestat tells louis that his (white) mistress who cares only for lestat and could give less of a shit about louis will be much “better suited” for their life together as opposed to claudia, who loved and favored louis. lestat wanted louis entirely dependent on him with no relationships outside of him. and it works.
and then we have s2– claudia forms a connection with the coven (at first…), but louis never does. he tries to find community amongst artists as a photographer and forge an identity outside of lestat and claudia and armand, but is immediately told he isn’t good enough for that, either. and in dubai, it seemed as though daniel and louis were on their way to becoming something along the lines of friends….
….only to arrive at s3, where they aren’t talking much after the publication of the book, and any hope of that dynamic being salvaged by the end of the season was ripped away when daniel helped conspire to behead, kidnap, and torture him and force louis to apologize when nobody has ever, EVER offered louis a proper apology in the entire series. at least lestat has his bandmates, but IWTV/TVL is a study in how louis de pointe du lac started off as a family man who valued platonic connections and companionship, but lost every single one of them.
