I’ve taken a screenshot of this but I should maybe print it out and put it up on my wall. I’ve been conscious of my accent. Such an instant giveaway of your whole life in a second from opening your mouth, sometimes an indicator of little moments you’d never have noticed, and often, misconceptions.

Mine too. Part Indian, part Canadian, a handful of words that come out strange because I’ve only heard certain people say them, some words that come out strange because I’ve only ever seen them written down. Often mistaken for… god knows where in the UK but I get that a surprising lot for someone that has no connection to the place.

I used to be really conscious of it. I’m young, I’m receptive, I’ve learned a new way of saying so many words. There’s an ‘r’ in my speech that had never existed before (we’re on the non-rhotic side of English). There’s the ‘grocery store accent’ for when you just want to seem like a local with no notably different history in particular. There are sounds I get used to hearing and that sometimes make their way into the voice in my head, but still feel strange and foreign in my mouth (particularly in French! They just don’t come out right. But French is a different kettle of fish. It’s a third language for me, I do expect the struggle. English is like a first language to me in most ways but legally.)

I’ve changed and adapted and hidden. As weird as that sounds, in full accountability to myself, I have hidden. It’s not hard to see why, even subconsciously. Of course you absorb things from your surroundings. But there is also social reward in blending in. Especially for a socially anxious person who could do without the extra attention. Of course there is a racial aspect to it as well. The reward is high, like I said.

Ajá, la cosa es que entre todo esto me surgió la duda, ¿alguien aquí en el franzdom en Tumblr habla/entiende español?, estoy en el franzdom desde por allí del 2014 y en ese entonces el contenido en español era bastante más frecuente.

Como sea, igual voy a comentar sobre todo esto aunque nadie lo lea? Bueno, hay demasiado, así que ya lo iré desglosando en otros posts
