MUST-READ RENAISSANCE FACT:

When Michelangelo was requested to paint his masterpiece, the new pope was super pumped. A lot of the cardinals were really into Michelangelo’s works and were excited to see their church painted by such a great man.

However, of course, there was this one salty cardinal who shit-talked Michelangelo. Michelangelo found out about this through some of the other cardinals and, in revenge, painted him being wrapped by a serpent, of which was depicted biting his groin (above).

When the cardinal saw himself being bitten in the groin by a snake in the painting he was PISSED so of course he went and complained to the pope. He demanded the pope do something about it/punish Michelangelo, but the pope said “I can’t do anything about that, sorry”. The cardinal proceeded to ask him why and the pope said “why, can’t you see? You’re in hell. If you were in purgatory, maybe I could help you”.
