Ever just watch old, campy, devastatingly sincere queer stories that leave you feeling warm and seen and like it’s a little easier to breathe because we’ve always been here and we’ve always been fighting and there has always been love despite it all?
there’s just something about going from bracing yourself a little because you’ve heard it’s good, but you know it came from it’s time, to laughing as thought out (tho occasionally outdated) jokes land, to feeling a spotlight on your soul as a character gives a stark and utterly sincere speech about their struggle to accepting themselves and finding the people who will love them back and dammit they’re not going to give that up. Then returning to jokes and plot and they even get a happy ending??
i got to see the birdcage in a theater last night. it's a robin williams comedy abt a flamboyant gay couple desperately trying to seem straight and conservative and "normal" for one night to impress the horrible parents of their son's fiancee. there's a lot of bouncing back and forth btwn hilarious slapstick and genuine emotional struggle, and in the middle of that venn diagram there's albert, one half of the gay couple, a very feminine queen, who regularly performs, like a hysterical aging diva, feeling tragically rejected and shunned and cheated-on and mocked by his partner and the plot. "i'm taking my toothbrush to the cemetery!" "don't look at me, i'm hideous!" these constant scenes of his comical self-exile punctuate the movie.
but there's this one scene that as a grown-up gay kid, i think is the saddest moment in the entire movie, which doesn't even try to make it funny. long essay incoming
val (the straight son) and armand (the dad and partner who is relatively able to pass as straight) have gotten themselves into dark suits and etc in preparation and albert, who spends most of his time in silk robes and pink blouses and gauzy linen, comes in, dressed identically to them.
he slowly sits down, and for an unbearable time val and armand just look at him. and he starts listing off the things he did right: the black pinstriped suit and sober hair and loafers and lack of makeup. he's done everything right! he should pass as straight! he should get the A! and val and armand still just look at him. and he's like.
oh. it's even more obvious this way.
he monologues a little, excuses himself, walks out. almost tearing up that he can't be part of the family tonight. without val or armand saying much of anything at all.
how heartbreaking it is that he just can't. he just can't pass. it doesn't matter how much everyone around you wants you to be straight, it doesn't matter how much YOU want to be like that, to do it for them, it doesn't matter how hard you try. you can do everything right, you can meet every technical requirement, you can check off every box, and it still won't work: you will never be the person they want you to be.
and the more you endlessly, desperately, massively try to be this person you're not, the more obvious it is to everyone else. the closer you get to performing the ideal, the more glaring the distance between the ideal and you. the millimeter-sized mistakes in the way you walk in a suit and move your hands and try to smile tell on you, somehow so much more than they ever did when you were a mile away from straight and half-dressed in a silk robe. bc putting on the costume of a straight person only highlights the acting, the desperation, the insecurity.
so no one has to say anything. they know; he knows; everyone knows that in order for this to be a good straight family, he has to be rejected.
in fact, in hindsight, albert has been expecting it, joking about it, play-acting it, hysterically attention-grabbing about it this whole movie.
he has a genuinely loving relationship and community with armand; in that safe space, he regularly acts out scenes of himself abandoned or forced to leave, plays up his mockable femininity, and most importantly, always tries to beat other people to the punch. rejection is not his worst fear; it is simply a constant fact of his life.
so he makes a joke of it, so well, so artistically, so eagerly, that you almost forget abt the cold reality -- that real rejection, always, is coming for him, and finds him when he's trying the hardest to be what other people want.
but i think arguably (also!) albert then gets the most beautiful victory in the whole movie. he puts on a whole costume and takes it upon himself to pretend to be val's straight mother for the night (which he actually sells!) he finds a way to be included using all his wonderful strengths in femininity and acting and wig-wearing. and then, when the whole ruse comes tumbling down, he says to the conservative family's faces, yes. this is who i am. and, frankly, the difference between me in that wig and me now is nothing.
idk. this whole movie's thesis seems to be articulated concisely by armand, close to the start: yes, i'm a middle-aged fag who wears foundation. but goddamnit, I know who I am, and it took me a long time to get here. no one else is taking that away from me. albert, of course, diva and performer and star, turns that into an elaborate show with costumes and wigs and a spotlight all on him.
but through all the comedy and makeup and star energy, the movie makes you see the constant, inevitable rejection that is foundational to a lot of gay people's inner lives, whether they externally do everything "right" or not, and how, just, genuinely sad it is.
The thing is Armand Goldman sold his beautiful cemetery plot in Key Biscayne for one next to Albert in that shithole Los Copa so he never misses a laugh
My memory of The Birdcage (1996) is always that it's more dated and more difficult to watch than it actually is. You hear "drag-themed comedy from the 90s based on a musical from the 80s based on a play from the 70s" and you brace yourself just a little, right? But the film has a strong gay perspective, so the fruity fag jokes mostly come off as warmly affectionate. There is a surprising amount of poignancy in Robin Williams' portrayal of Armand, grudgingly agreeing to his beloved son's request that he go back into the closet for an evening ("do me a favor and don't talk to me for a while"). The drag club's staff attempting to redecorate the apartment with stuff straight people might like (a taxidermy moose head, an enormous crucifix, and Playboy magazine) is extremely funny. Albert's histrionics are a point of tension because he does often come off as a stereotypically pathetic/comic figure, but towards the end of the movie he makes it very clear that he's aware of how people see him, and asserts that trying to copy a stoic masculinity he doesn't possess for the sake of social approval would be more pathetic. In the 1983 musical adaptation, they give "Albert" (Albin) the only good song in the whole show, "I Am What I Am", which Gloria Gaynor covered to the delight of gays everywhere. Apparently Nathan Lane wasn't (publicly) out yet in 1996, which is amazing because it means that at one point in this movie you're watching a gay man playing a straight man playing a gay man playing a straight man, in a movie about how it's important to be yourself, an absurdity that does seem to encapsulate the state of gay America in the 90s.
I forgot to include this!! In an interview at the time that this movie came out someone has asked Nathan Lane why he was so good at playing a gay guy. And Robin Williams and stepped in and said we’re actors it’s our job essentially. Nathan later said in a different interview that he felt so thankful for Robin in that moment because I was worried he was going to get outed in that moment. Also!! Robin Williams was always for the gays! Went he moved to Hollywood they were the ones that took care of him! Which is why he was so passionate about taking care of them in return! ❤️❤️❤️

I’m not allowed to add any more 😢 didn’t have enough room for all of them, so I made an honorable mentions category just to list a couple more but even this is not an exhaustive list, plus if it’s a mostly female cast I tried to not include all even tho I love them all dearly, like paper girls, Tiffany, Mac, and Erin all hold places in my heart but sadly not in my poll
Honorable Mentions:
Inej and Nina (Six of Crows), Mabel Pines (Gravity Falls), Reagan Ridley (Inside Job), Ivy (Carmen SanDiego), Jentry Chau (Jentry Chau vs the underworld), Velma Dinkley (Scooby Doo), Daphne Blake (Scooby Doo), Tori Springs (Solitaire), Stephanie Brown (Spoiler/Robin/Batgirl), Choi Soo-Yeon (Extraordinary Attorney Woo), Diana Barry (Anne of Green Gables), Beverly Marsh (Stephen King’s IT), Sloane Peterson (FBDO), Jeanie Bueller (FBDO), Helga Pataki (Hey Arnold), Eleina (Lazarus), Grace (Infinity Train), Amelia (Infinity Train), Mira (The Hollow), Megan (But I’m a Cheerleader)
And I’m not going to even try to list all the anime ones but just imagine nearly every studio Ghibli and a handful of other anime women
Was listening to a bunch of different covers of Rainbow Connection to determine my favorite and while I was listening I thought of this meme, so here ya go
