The origin of Ji-hoonās mother had always been a mystery not spoken of. All that Ji-hoon had been told of her was that she was a refugee, come to Aurea from somewhere unknown beyond it - an ill-adapted outsider too jaded to keep trying to blend in. Not that Ji-hoon could inquire further, even now when he is more than old enough to understand the ways of the world. Sheās long gone by now, taken way too early at Ji-hoonās tender age of ten by malaria. All he has left of her are sparse measly trinkets she owned and a memory of lullabies sung in strange languages he understood but could not speak.
Aside from that, there was a venomous voice whispering, using his motherās otherwise sweet and tender cadence to wiggle into his ear and talk of grand yet atrocious things they should not even dare to dream about - ambition, hate, revenge and disappointment. āYou must grow up well and rise above this, my sweet little cicada bug. You must make yourself fit for great things. Donāt let anyone look down on you like they did at me.ā Those were Ji-hoonās bedtime stories before her tender foreign voice would start singing unfamiliar words heād much rather hear. But ten years of this was enough to prepare Ji-hoon for the harsh reality of her passing and leaving him alone to fend for himself. Heād looked upon her leaving with the coldness of someone knowing that it had been preordained. She had no strength to do what she always wanted, so sheād passed her bitterness on to him to carry in her stead.
As for his father, gone before Ji-hoon was delivered into the world⦠therein lay the crux of all their issues even though his mother had described this stranger as kind and loving in the past, not a single bad word to be said about him. Except the regret that heād perished before he could make her his legal wife.
It wasnāt that Ji-hoon was truly alone really. There was his fatherās family in Aurea. A rather large family as a matter of fact and well off too, patricians in the hierarchical order of things. The family of his fatherās younger brother. Yet still they were not Ji-hoonās family, not truly. The lady of the house was not his mother, his cousins disdained him and he was not his uncleās nephew but a nuisance heād adopted out of familial obligation. Between his motherās reminders that he must take what he wants forcefully because it was denied him, all inheritance gone the others, the ambition imposed on him fueled by her bitterness for having never been able to truly become an accepted part of this family and their constant reminders that he was lesser, an outsider, an intruder just like his mother, Ji-hoon was left with no choice but to go where rare few would be refused - the army.
Truth be told he was not cut out for it. At least not in the way that gave him any joy from this profession which heād otherwise never choose for himself, were any other appealing choices even available. But there was a thing about Ji-hoon which made this easier to handle and perhaps even thrive in. His magick.
It had certainly not been passed down to him from his fatherās line, so it mustāve come from his mother. But it was a thing never spoken of unless it was a lesson how to conceal it or use it without being noticed. His magic was almost entirely cerebral, making him a mentalist of a sort. Insanely accurate photographic memory, sharp intelligence and an innate ability to learn ten times quicker than an average person, if not faster. If it is a skill that can be taught, Ji-hoon can pick it up with ease after only a brief observation. Magical mimicry or ability mimicry is also possible though it comes at a steep cost⦠one that got him locked by his mother in a cellar quite a number of times until the consequences of abusing his power subsided.
Before heād learned to tame his hubris and pride, this magic of his had been more trouble than it was worth. From the earliest childhood, especially when the younger generation of the Han family started their schooling, Ji-hoon had to take care not to outshine his cousins. This ability made the attempt to stay in their shadows much harder than it looked. But outdoing them meant further disdain and even twisted excuses for punishment that made Ji-hoonās every day life and already bleak future even more difficult.
So, he had learned to humble himself, rely on his preternatural cunning and wit to bide his time in the shadows of his mediocre family. He learned his place and hid all ambition and resentment behind a grinning mask. Subservient, ready to please and flatter, downplaying himself while he quietly schemed in the dark like a sly little fox, just how his mother had taught him. All the while learning how to also temper his strongest ability, which turns him into something monstrous ready to go on a rampage if not locked up and in chains - a gruesome creature covered in scales with strength of a dozen men but no reason and rationality of the usual charming, clever Ji-hoon; his shadow self, his complete opposite.
This shadow self was exactly what had made Ji-hoon leave the army where heād almost been promoted to a satisfyingly higher position. Too much of a risk of exposure even after all the careful years, too precarious of a game to balance. His charismatic personality and capability had earned him more friends than foes throughout the years and at the ripe age of thirty, he was more than free to retire from service with some praise-worthy merit to his name. Not that heād gotten any from his family anyway. With a few like-minded comrades and friends from the same regiment, heād began to establish a gathering of custodes, most former military just like himself though any capable and more or less honorable sort were welcome after a thorough background check. Ordo Vulpium had been established, providing personal and executive protection to whoever needed it or could afford it. Four years later and Ji-hoon had managed to get it to a decent enough reputation with a growing list of connections fanning out and through Aurea, slowly but surely.
With it he was prepping, finally feeling strong enough to go against those who had ruined his motherās life and cast her out like a dog on the street. Until a hitch in his smooth sailing had happened and a āsmall projectā chose him to provide services the order offered either personally or in no other way, no room for bargain except for his price. Reluctant to pass on this chance for it had given him an in to a layer of society he could not otherwise hope to touch, Ji-hoon drew up a magicked contract with which he was sworn to protect with his flesh and blood the sibling of the heir and magistrate of house Kwon, until such time comes that the contract is up. Personal plans on pause but not forgotten, Ji-hoon stepped into his new role while at the same time managing his own agenda, whatever it may evolve into in the future. As for the Han family, they had plenty of time to repent. Now itās time for revenge.
Ordo Vulpium
An order of former fighters, militias or off-duty soldiers, sometimes even retired mercenaries and other persons capable of combat, weapon wielding and providing physical protection to the general populace. Mostly hired by private citizens of Aurea, wealthy patricians for executive protection and sometimes even some more influential people, though cases of serving magisterium are rare and under strict magical contract. Commercial security for business owners, warehouses and wealthy estates is also available. Escort of trading caravans and carriages around Aurea and abroad can be arranged if the trip does not take more than a certain number of years, depending on availability, budget and manpower needed, as well as the levels of danger and difficulty of the task. The orderās headquarters is among harbor housing in Iuana Harbor among high density apartment blocks and near massive warehouses accepting wares imported from abroad. Its commercial storefront is a small thermopolium within one of the insulae while Ji-hoon lives in the cella above it. Ji-hoon also sometimes runs the cook shop as well and could frequently be found working out potential patrons lured in with hot meals after long voyages and passed quarantine.
