Kara furrowed her brow in his direction. She could hear him clearly, and yet part of her still wanted to believe this wasn't real... that Winn would show up to work again like nothing happened, but that was far from reality. "Did you just say 'that was kind of the idea'?" She gripped her arms a bit tighter now as anger came to the surface. She knew his father was the one to blame for all of this, but that didn't stop her from questioning what happened between her and Winn. If she didn't react to the kiss like she had, or approached him differently at his desk instead of nervously bringing up potstickers, they'd be together in National City by now. Maybe. Wishful thinking on her end, as always.
Sighing, Kara looked back up at him, voice stern as she tried to conceal her anger and frustration. "I can understand having someone like your dad cause others harm and wanting to leave. I do. What I don't understand is how you call me your best friend and just leave without telling me where you were going? What if something happened to you?!" The tone of her voice changed, shouting now. "I deserved that much! Do you have any idea how it felt for me to come back to work the next morning and see your desk empty? How I felt when your texts and phone calls dropped?" She could feel tears falling down her cheeks by now. She wasn't expecting to cry, but she didn't realize how angry and hurt she was by his actions either.
"I could have helped you through this, you know. Been by your side just for you to not be alone. You can't run from your problems, Winn.
He knew as soon as he said the words that she was going to be upset, and she had every right to be. It wasn't fair to her, none of it was. It wasn't always his nature to push people away, but now he felt the need to. That if he let people in then they would see the true broken mess that he was and not want anything to do with him. It was better, safer, this way. He wished he could blame his father for being the only reason he needed to run, but the truth was that it was all because of Winn. Because of who he was as a person, because he had a tendency to mess up every good thing in his life. Just like he had with Kara.
Her reaction was almost exactly what he expected, and yet he found himself frozen at her words. Because every time he let himself imagine someone missing him, he talked himself out of it. Told himself that they couldn't miss him, because what was there to miss? The son of a mass murderer who was one day going to hurt everyone he loved? Someone who didn't know how to function as a real human and instead was just pretending. Owen wasn't as messy, Owen got to act and tell stories. Owen was loved. Maybe Winn never was.
"Kara, I don't know what you want me to say." His voice was almost even, void of most emotion as he looked at her. Even as the tears fell down her face he could feel himself pausing, realizing that she was angry. She was upset. And he did that, he caused that. "It's more complicated than just my dad. Me staying in National City wasn't safe for anyone. Me staying in your lives wasn't safe."
Virginia Woolf, from her novel titled "The Waves," originally published in 1931
Not expecting his surprised reaction, Kara jumped a little. “Sorry… I didn’t mean to scare you.” Kara had always been grateful for the powers she had. Moments like the one she was in currently made her even more thankful. She couldn’t imagine sitting in a car or a plane for hours just waiting to see Winn again. How she would feel with her nerves and anxiety festering inside her during such a long commute… but now that she was a few feet from him, those feelings didn’t go amiss either.
“I was worried about you, Winn. After what happened with your dad… between us… you just left without saying goodbye. No one knew where you were. I didn’t know where you were.” She didn’t realize she felt a bit of anger coursing through her veins either. How could he just leave after telling her how he felt? He was her best friend… and despite how much she wanted to push aside her feelings and make sure he was okay, she couldn’t ignore how she felt either. Angry, hurt, confused...
Adjusting her glasses a bit, Kara took a few more steps forward to close the gap between them with her arms crossed. “Please say something. Anything.”
"It's fine, just wasn't expecting anyone to be in here." Let alone Kara, she might have been the last person he was expecting when he opened the door to his dressing room. He should have put the pieces together when he saw her in the audience and talked himself out of the possibility that she could be here.
It was a name he hadn't heard in almost a year. Winn. He was positive that he was never going to hear it again, that no one was going to miss Winn Schott and he could live his life hiding in plain sight as Owen. "That was kind of the idea." He muttered knowing that it was harsh, that it wasn't fair to Kara. He was the one that left, he was the one who didn't say goodbye. Just quit his job with an email to his supervisor and a few belongings before deciding that the rest could be donated.
"I don't know what you want me to say Kara." His voice was softer now, realizing for maybe the first time that maybe someone in National City did miss him. He was so sure that Kara wanted nothing to do with him that he never even gave her the chance to say otherwise. "I needed to get out of there, needed to leave."

"You and your father aren't the only ones who are linked. We are too.”
Aside from Alex, Winn was the most important person in her life. He understood her, related to her. Winn being in her life helped her overcome her internal battles, and she never felt isolated or alone with him by her side. So, why was it difficult to tell him how she felt? We are too. Those three words haunted her. But his kiss— that kiss… Why was she scared to stop him that night? She wasn’t afraid to protect National City from danger, but she was afraid to tell Winn how she felt. Now that Winslow Schott Sr was back in prison, Kara decided she couldn’t let her feelings stay hidden. Despite finding the courage to confess her feelings, Winn was nowhere to be found. Panic filled Kara as days turned into weeks, but that all changed when she discovered a new musical spotlight for The Newsies, and the main actor was Winn himself. The missed calls and texts left unanswered confirmed her suspicions that he had run away, and it seemed he had taken on a new identity in the process.
Within seconds, Kara bought a ticket for the show that night and flew to New York in what she hoped would be a happy reunion. From the beginning to the end of the performance, Kara smiled in her seat as she watched her best friend. Once the show came to a close, Kara excused herself before the curtain call and used her superpowers to sneak backstage and hide in his dressing room. While she wanted to confess her feelings, Kara was more concerned about how Winn was doing after what had taken place in National City.
Her concern for his well-being and her feelings for Winn made her pace about his dressing room. She was not about to fly back to National City because not only did she need to tell him how she felt, but Kara needed answers as to why he left— if he was okay... Hearing the sound of the door to his dressing room open made her stop pacing, and she took a deep breath. “I didn’t realize you wanted to be on Broadway someday.” Kara greeted him with a small smile. “H— hey, Winn. It's been a long time."

He wasn't proud of how he ran, not saying anything to the people he cared about in National City and instead taking off across the country. He was careful about it, covering his tracks every step of the way and making sure no one could connect Winn Schott Junior to Owen Lucian. A clean break, it was for the best. Winn Schott was a ticking time bomb just waiting to go off, his father proved that. Sometimes it felt like his father was still there, lurking behind him and reminding him that it was only a matter of time before Winn lost everything.
So he took off, went to do the only other thing he could think of. A place where he could pretend to be something other than what he was. Theater was something he loved in high school, every time he stepped on that stage he could be someone else, tell a different story. He didn't mean to end up making his Broadway debut in a leading role, but he was proud of how far he had come.
It was during Santa Fe that he first thought he saw her, his eyes glancing over the audience as he connected with Jack's desire to run. The heartbreak as he realized that what he had was overwhelming and he was in over his head. It was only a moment of recognition before he slipped back into Jack Kelly, reminding himself that Kara was across the country in National City, not sitting in a New York theater.
Entering his dressing room, Winn held the Newsie cap in his hand as he pushed the door open. What he didn't expect was the sound of a voice he hadn't heard in forever. Startled, Winn threw the cap in her direction letting out a loud gasp as he threw his hand over his heart. "Kara." He spoke, disbelief in his voice before it fully hit him. She was here. She found him. "Wh-what are you doing here? How did you get back here? Wait don't answer that, pretty sure you are faster than anyone in this theater."
heaven is boring and hell sent better invitations
" yeah, well. diseased raccoons aren't exactly seen as a threat to the DEO's operations, " alex countered, without shame, and returned her attention to the touchscreen she'd only briefly glanced up from. her disapproval alone wouldn't chase him off the scent of the wild notion he'd been unravelling... but she knew what would. " but I mean — if you want to risk getting a shot in your ass, that's totally your call. "
"Don't take away my dream of having a racoon sidekick." Winn groaned as she mentioned the shot. Needles were not his thing, he was fine to face a lot of fears but needles were where he drew the line. "Do you find joy in killing my dreams? Or just the animal related ones?"
Better for her. Better because she can do her job knowing that he's somewhere safe. And if for some reason he isn't, then she'll know within record time. She can't take another thing happening to him. She can't bare the weight, or the responsibility, of it. She knows it's not fair to him, she's laid awake at night thinking about it. Thinking about what she's asking of him. Because this is not a life, and she wants to be able to promise him that it is short term. But it keeps getting longer.
"I know you can't see it now." She says, knowing she's fighting an uphill battle and is failing with every step. "But one day you'll understand why it had to be this way."
"What if I need this?" She asks, knowing it's a low blow. It's not fair. But, then again, none of this is. "What if I need you to be safe? What if I need to know that you're somewhere no one can get to you because I can't live with myself if something happens to you again?"
She chooses not to look too closely at what she just said, at what it really means. Because saying that at all feels like laying herself bare, and thinking any further is more than she can take. Because Sarah is loyal, scarily so. She'd go this far for anyone she cares about, anyone she loves. Even if she can't admit to herself that love is what this is.
Maybe he was too blinded by the trauma to see the meaning of her words, to actually pause for a moment and try to see where Sarah was coming from. He trusted Sarah with his life, she was the one who taught him everything he knows now. She had never given him a reason to not trust that she was doing things for the right reasons, but being stuck in a house with John Casey for an indefinite amount of time certainly didn't help Winn process everything that had happened.
And then she said it. That she couldn't live with herself if something else happened to him. It finally got through to him, Winn freezing and letting the silence sit between them for a beat longer than he should have. He would sometimes think about it, wonder what it had been like for Sarah to dig through the earth to find him. "Sarah. What happened wasn't your fault."

She gave him a look, not that she didn't believe that Evan was protective, because he was. But he also wouldn't blindly throw himself at anyone, he was just relieved that she was back around. Just like she was relieved to be able to be around her brother again. "He'd never do that, he knows better" she assured him still as she settled against the counter. "It was Buck's idea, I told him I still wanted to be able to help people, but I didn't want to put people in danger" obviously she would never want to subject anyone to the potential of Dough walking through that door and hurting them merely because she was there. "And this way I'll be able to help people, even if it's just over the phone"
Winn relaxed slightly at her words, knowing that if Maddie trusted her brother then he had no reason to worry. He understood Buck wanting to be protective, and knowing what Maddie went through Winn felt the same way. Maddie didn't deserve what she went through. Winn smiled at her words, happy that she found something that she loved doing. He was still looking, trying to find something that he could do that his father couldn't track him down for. "You do have a knack for staying calm in stressful situations. When the car broke down in Oklahoma I thought I was going to lose my mind and somehow you were so put together." He smiled at the memory, able to laugh about it now. "Maybe your brother can help me find a job so I'm not just doing freelance work anymore. I love helping men set up VPNs to help them hide their extracurricular activities from their significant others but I would rather do something that actually helps me sleep at night."
Everyone I loved, I loved for free. But you don't know how much I paid for that.

this is an aggressive reminder that you deserve to be considered as much as you consider others in love and friendship
