Piazza Duomo.La attraverso a piedi ogni mattina andando in ufficio. Passo spedito, testa piena dei programmi della giornata, occhi che vagano guardando senza vedere.Senza vedere quello che hai sotto gli occhi ma che dai per scontato, banale, ovvio. E’ lì dove è sempre stato, non merita l’uso di nemmeno una sinapsi. Tanto lì è, e lì resta. Oggi, pero’, mi sono fermato all’improvviso. Sarà stata l’aria più limpida del solito, una rarità a Milano. Sarà stata la piazza un po’ più vuota. Sarà stata la luce brillante di una mattina di primavera. Non so perchè, ma oggi lo ho visto. Una stupefacente mole di venature chiare e di proiezioni verticali. Il Duomo di Milano è bellissimo.E ogni mattina si meriterebbe uno sguardo carico di stupore.

Sally Carrocino tells us her touching story: “My love affair with Italy and Milano goes back to my husband John and my first trip to Italy October 2001. Our first evening we had dinner at some very good Italian friends of Johns, Rino and Gabriella. Wonderful home cooked Italian dinner and Prosecco. I was hooked. We have been back four times and always start or finish in Milano. On our second trip we got married. Did all the Italian paperwork and have an Italian marriage license which meant so much to us. Naturally Rino and Gabriella stood up for us. It was a magically day, just the four of us.
We got married in Lemna, a little village on top of a hill over looking Lake Como. We were married by the Mayor in his office. We have traveled from north to south and in between, as well as a couple times to Sicily. There has never been a place we did not love, but Milano and the sight of the Duomo always brings me to tears.

The Duomo. <<Did you know?>> Conservation of the Duomo di Milano is an ongoing activity that requires continuous work on the building. The very long construction period, protracted over several centuries, meant that maintenance was a problem from the earliest stages. The first application of modern restoration techniques was the consolidation of the Main Spire which the architect of Veneranda Fabbrica, Pietro Pestagalli (1840), had proposed demolishing and reconstructing under a new project developed by him and more in keeping with the style of the Cathedral. The solution adopted by Ambrogio Nava, member of the Board of Veneranda Fabbrica, was an intervention that restored the spire without modifying its structure. Since then, restoration of the deteriorated parts has continued, always aiming to preserve the existing structures as far as possible. <<Do you Duomo?>>
