Ww2 Steve and Bucky is so tragic
And there's no way they would've served in the war and won
And it's tailored made to them
If Steve didn't force himself into the war, Bucky would've been officially dead, and the Winter Solider would've been born earlier
But he did, and he still lost Bucky
Multiple times
Its tailor made to them, and there is nothing they could've done without becoming different men
Bucky was always going to war
He was drafted. And unless he wanted to become a criminal, he had to go to war.
His number was 32557038. The prefix 32 was used for draftees out of Delaware, New Jersey, and New York.
James 'Bucky' Buchanan Barnes was always going to die in ww2
The Winter Solider was always going to be born in ww2
Steve would've never been able to keep Bucky alive regardless of if he served or not
The only way to avoid the tragedy was to be different men. And that would make it a different story.
As we can see. Ww2 and Marvel mean a lot to me
Steve's and Bucky's backstory will always be my roman empire

Sometimes I think about how genuine Bucky and Steve’s friendship is and how much Bucky must have loved Steve because just think about it. Bucky was very intelligent and excellent in school, he was a great athlete, he was attractive, he had everything to be one of those guys that are total assholes specially in times like the 40’s. Like, let’s be for real. In real life, people that have all those characteristics that pre-war Bucky had are not always the nicest, or at least, they don’t become best friends of people like Steve. Steve who had countless diseases, who was not very appealing to girls, who would always be ignored or taken for granted.
But Bucky did.
He became Steve’s best friend. He was always there since they were just little kids and as he grew bigger and noticed that his best friend didn’t so much, he still was always there. He always took care of him.
And maybe I like over analyzing his character so much, but that just made me think of what a great fucking person Bucky Barnes had to be to be considered by CAPTAIN AMERICA his best friend.
Even after all those years, even after Hydra, even after the serum, when Steve found out that Bucky was alive the first thing he wanted to do was to save him. And in Civil War he fought his own teammates and went against the government just for him.
Steve thought Bucky was worth it because Bucky was the first to think he was worth it.
THIS TWEET WILL GO DOWN IN HISTORY
What a wonderful day to remember how gay Bucky is for Steve
Mcu Steve Rogers is so insanely queer it enrages me
"I'd figure I'd wait...for the right partner."
"Kinda hard to find someone with shared life experience."
"Even when I had nothing, I had Bucky."
Stf up and go kiss your best friend
there's something about steve–who has been denied access to manhood his whole life, due to his disability–forcing society to make space for him as a man, and continuing to embrace positive masculinity; regardless of societies expectations of their fictionalized version of him.
there's also something about bucky–who has had to conform to a very narrow view of manhood his whole life, to protect his family and himself from the repercussions of being discovered–finally having the freedom to expand what it means for him to be a man through embracing the femininity he's always yearned to express.

How often do you think Bucky cried for Steve when he was being tortured by Hydra
“That’s why he doesn’t kill him. That’s why he saves him. That end scene to me was always like: ‘I don’t know what this is, I just know I’m supposed to do this right now. Whatever this is, I’m supposed to protect this for some reason.”

Sebastian Stan on Bucky’s mindset when he decides not to let Steve die
(via etharei)
Ok, I’m probably the last one to notice this, but even if I am, I’m bringing it up again bc it’s very important and very sad and I need to cry about it.
I’ve seen this scene about 50 times now and not once did I bother to take a closer look at Bucky. Specifically, his eyes. I always thought he was looking at Schmidt or in the general direction of the two while I focused on Steve’s face and what was happening. Now, obv, Steve is looking at Schmidt bc he’s being confronted and all that. But look at Bucky. Compare his gaze in the 4th gif to Steve’s. It’s not trained on Schmidt. He’s looking directly at Zola and his face looks like a mixture of fear, anger and like he’s gonna puke. All of which would make sense after you imagine the shit Zola put him through on that table before Steve showed up. Just try to imagine one scenario that could be happening in his head here. Like reliving the parts where they tortured him and experimented on him, slowly took away the control of his own mind, tried to take his memories so he had to keep reminding himself who he was and began the process of turning him into god only knew what. When Steve found Bucky, he looked like he had no idea what was going on around him. No awareness that the alarm went off, soldiers abandoning their posts, the doctors scurrying off to safety. He didn’t realize he was alone in the room and no one was looking after him anymore. He just repeated his name and number over and over again and if Steve hadn’t found him, he’d have went down with the building while completely lost to his surroundings. After Steve got him out I imagine he didn’t have much time to dwell on the things they did to him. Until now. Until he saw Zola’s face and it hit him like a truck and the result was that face above. Little did he know that even if they do get out of here alive, he was eventually gonna end up right back where he was and Zola would get to finish what he started and if that doesn’t fuck you up…i don’t even. fuck this movie and fuck these characters i did not sign up for this pain
But look at Zola
He stops and stares at Bucky. Out of surprise, of course, but it’s not cursory. He doesn’t look at Bucky as if he was simply another POW Erskine’s soldier has rescued.
He’s looking at his test results. He’s collecting data. He knows that Barnes should have never been able to climb off the table. He shouldn’t be standing. He probably shouldn’t even be conscious! Much less keep up with a successful serum test subject. Zola knows in that moment that his research is valid. It’s been proven. He can replicate it if need be.
He also now knows that Barnes is important to the American. He sought Barnes out specifically. And later, when he finds out they both survived, that Barnes did not return to America, but is still on the front lines with the Captain, he makes a note of that as well.
Bucky didn’t become HYDRA’s when he fell, he was HYDRA’s new secret weapon when Steve rescued him.
I have to comment on the fact that when it comes to the serum, Bucky is souped UP on that stuff. Steve probably tones back how much he’s hitting normal humans, but GOOD LANDS. Bucky’s not just knocking someone down, he’s getting them air borne. With a kick. We know the cyborg arm is really strong, but BUCKY is insanely strong. Reminds me of the comic where he throws an arrow through someone’s face with his good arm, not even the cyborg one. Bucky is scary ramped up in the strength department.
This is why when people talk about Bucky having received an “inferior” version of the serum, I kind of raise my eyebrows. The overall effects of Zola’s serum might have differed from Erskine’s, but it certainly doesn’t seem to have left Bucky physically weaker. There are a lot of fics that assume Bucky would not be a match for Steve if Steve were actually willing to fight him, but Bucky more than proves his strength in Winter Soldier.
This should also make people realize that he isn’t some lost puppy. He can take care of hisself, even if he doesn’t have memories. He got the Smithsonian by himself right? He got those clothes himself right? He can take care of himself.
He was manipulated to be a predator. He is strong enough, swift enough to take down prey. He is intuitive enough to find who or what he wants. Even before The Soldier, Bucky was smart as a whip and could hold his own in a fight. But now? Now he is the perfect weapon, whether or not he wishes to be. He adapts, he fights, he wins.
You know what else bugs me? When people act in fics like he’s just going to snap and kill everyone around him. Bucky is not a violent person. I don’t think the Winter Soldier is a violent person either. He killed because he was ordered to, but if he wasn’t ordered to? TBH I think the Winter Soldier would probably be pretty chill and quiet. Like, you wouldn’t want to startle him or whatever, because yeah, scary ninja personification of death, but if you were just, like, sharing a train car? Or sitting in a waiting room? Not a randomly violent guy. No homicidal urges. Probably largely just wants to be left the fuck alone to, like, contemplate Dostoevsky or something.
I recently re-watched Cap2, and this scene — it’s basically Bucky’s equivalent of what Steve did on the Lemurian Star — he takes out a whole squadron (???) of pilots single-handedly. And it’s … stunning how brutallly effective he is. No fancy Cap parkour. Just straight up killing machine.
Which I think gets at the above meta/commentary — WS is not just a soldier, he’s a highy trained Super Soldier. He can go toe-to-toe with Steve on basically everything — hand-to-hand combat, leading a team (he leads a team when he’s tracking Nat/Steve), and taking down a large # of machines/men single-handedly.
The difference, then, is the drive. Which is that WS has none. He is a ghost that simply follows orders (and when he doesn’t, he gets wiped.) Bucky has no direction, so he goes where he’s pointed. One thing I find so interesting about mcu!WS is how neutral he is. There’s no Soviet brainwashing (we see Pierce giving him The Talk, but he doesn’t seem to actually care), no misguided sense of right or wrong. Just … nothing.
Of course, Steve was like that, too, at the beginning of the film — just following orders and muddling through life. But Steve knew enough to be dissatisfied by that, to Want Out. Which is why he’s Steve.
And this is one of the larger themes of CA:TWS — it’s about a bunch of highly skilled people who no longer find satisfaction in following orders, and want to find meaning outside of their jobs. Sam did it, Nat and Steve are looking, and Bucky is just starting.

all that serum heightened emotion—can you imagine how that smacks Steve right in the face when bucky’s in front of him again. Like ‘oh shit, I’m in love love.’ The sun rises and sets with it. Because he can only feel things in extremes and now it’s all too big for his body.
Is it any wonder, then, why his plane ended up in the ocean?
something i love is how Steve Rogers canonically takes after his mother. both appearance wise and in terms of his ideals
too bad the mcu's powers that be didn't care to explore steve or bucky's backstories beyond catws, or else we could've gotten an actual appearance from Sarah, but that's ok future projects can fix this /copium
but anyways Steve is canonical Momma's Boy, I wish marvel would remember lol
now if only marvel could also remember that Bucky Barnes is a protector and steve's guardian angel with a shotgun (or i guess sniper rifle, during the war)
cuz if marvel did then they could be genius and retroactively give us flashbacks/scenes in the past that put Bucky back there with little Steve and show interactions between Bucky and Sarah and have Steve's mom thank him for looking out for her fighter of a son, and also retroactively include scenes of Bucky's family reacting to their kid choosing to pick up the disabled little bullied Irish kid and decide he must protect hehe
there's too much good shit there that sets up the true nature of Bucky and Steve's friendship, which i feel like marvel writers kinda forgot over the years and replaced it with caricature-ish flat understanding of both Bucky and Steve, so such scenes would be good to remind writers and the audience of why they've been caring about each other and give insight into their parents
Am I the only one who gets the vibe that, quite apart from wanting to unravel any plot-threads which undermine the specialness to Steve of the Token Female they bothered to put in the Cap movies… they don’t want Steve to be a Mammy’s Boy, cuz they see that as less acceptably manly and cool?
Like: Tony is allowed to obsess over what his dad thought of him, across multiple movies (and ditto what the Odinson boys thought of Odin’s opinion of them) but mothers only matter if, and only while, they’re being fridged?
Ditto with Bucky’s mother too, now I think about it (at least his dad also gets zero mention or exposure). And it would be so sweet and easy to have flashbacks of kid Steve and Bucky – it would even save them the hassle of having to pay for the adult stars, to film!
Also can you imagine kid-Bucky, already a worrier, asking Sarah what Steve’s dad died of and finding out he died from having bad lungs and this just unlocking a whole new level of nightmares for him about Steve and his ’fuck you imma fight everyone in this dirty dank alleyway with bad air’ attitude. 😩
I absolutely 100% headcanon Bucky and Sarah as having a whole unspoken language between them, as the only two people on earth who get Steve. I always imagined there would be a whole series of private memories – moments of non-verbal communication between him and her – which even Steve himself wasn’t privy to.
now if only marvel could also remember that Bucky Barnes is a protector and steve’s guardian angel with a shotgun (or i guess sniper rifle, during the war)
just the other day someone posted about Sebastian Stan describing their relationship as Bucky seeing himself as Steve’s protector, even later on (unfortunately I can’t find it now). So once again, the actors seem to have cared about this more than the writers which is wild.
