you have entered.. the scary door
inspired by this classic
Children are not a burden. The elderly are not a burden. Stop degrading and dehumanizing people for their age because they require extra care.

A comic about the spectrum of responses to stress - we talk alot about the more extreme ends of this and trauma, but the more subtle and every day responses can be harder to spot. if we can understand our own and other’s responses better, problems Are easier to confront and blaming is less likely to happen :) hope it’s helpful!!

Sometimes it is very difficult to be grateful for free food boxes when they don't actually contain anything that goes together as a single, substantial meal.
How do you make a meal for five people out of some onions, a half a bag of apples, and a sack of carrots?
So many free food initiatives work under the assumption that people already have everything they need to prep, cook, and serve meals, and all they need is a couple of side dishes. It's exhausting.
Just off the top of my head, shelf-stable stuff that my household could ALWAYS use, but that nobody ever thinks to add to boxes:
Bread
Tuna
Canned peas
Saltine crackers
Tomato sauce
Canned tomatoes
Ramen noodles
Canned pasta (ravioli, spaghetti)
Canned soup
Jelly
Pancake mix
Sugar
Coffee
Creamer
Flour
Granola bars
Honey
Cereal
Grits
Oatmeaal
And all that with my normal caveat that cash is king. I get a lot of comments on posts like this along the lines of "but how do I know what you need???" and the honest answer is that you don't. So just give me cash so I can make a meal plan and budget out the items I actually need and will actually eat.
And if you plan on giving out canned goods, make sure they have 1) a way to open them if they're not pop-tabs, and 2) a way to heat them, if necessary.
^^^ Good reminders from Reyah.
This list is 100% based on me and my household. Other people find other things more useful. That’s why it’s so, so much easier to just donate cash, either to the food bank or to the individual, because it’s easier for them to get what they actually need.
It avoids all sorts of problems, such as the same can of corned beef hash getting traded around the neighborhood because literally nobody wants to eat it. True story.
When I give food aid, I usually try to follow these general guidelines:
Find out allergies and preferences. No point in giving someone food if they can't eat it.
Find out how many people they need to feed. That way perishables don't perish and people don't get underfed.
Think of things as complete meals. How many meals can you give them? Is there a protein, a carb, and a vegetable? Can they cook them? Is it possible to include "easy meals" as well, things that don't need prep work? Do you have oil and spices in your box too if they don't have them?
I try to include something sweet or some kind of treat with the food box. Life is stressful enough when you're in a place where you need food aid to get by and a little treat can make it easier.
If you're not doing a mass distribution, you can and should tailor your food aid to the individual you're helping.
Cash. Cash cash cash cash cash cash cash. If at all possible I give people cash. It buys tampons and toilet paper and diapers and deodorant and shampoo, and you get the picture. There's way more consumables people need than just food. Help with cash too if you can.
Don't be a dick, find out what they need and actually help people. If you're getting mad at someone for not wanting aid they can't use, then you should reexamine your motivation for helping them.
^^ This is a FANTASTIC set of guidelines to follow.
Do not donate expired, dented, partially used, or things missing lables. These things are automatically thrown away and you've essentially donated nothing.

Thinking about that point @dingdongyouarewrong made in her most recent video about how a lot of people (mostly young people) online seem to view media exclusively through the lens of representation with no regard to the actual content of the story and it's tricky because it's clear that a lot of people are SO desperate to see themselves in the media they consume that representation alone is a selling point but we have to consider the potential downsides because there are limits to what representation alone can accomplish.
Like imagine if someone made a show that went REALLY far out of its way to have lots of representation and pitched itself as having lots of representation and everyone clamoring for more diverse media got really invested in it and then the show sucked ass. Like can you imagine what a NIGHTMARE that would be? Can you imagine the discourse? The bitterness? The down-badness of it all?
If someone ever made a show like that it might just produce one of the worst fandom experiences of all time
