everyone in farseer: fitz you're so fucking stupid and ignorant and childish, how could you not have known *piece of information they withheld from him*
shrewdās stupidity amazes me genuinely mind-blowing amounts of stupidity
to return to the same scene for the millionth time, when chade tells fitz there's a legend now that his childhood bedroom is haunted, what kills me is not only that the legend partially started because chade kept that room empty all those years (the room therefore haunted by chade's desire for the child fitz that can never return), or that a ghost haunting the room would be far more benign than what chade was really doing there all throughout fitz's childhood, but that the legend was started because a stableboy saw the pocked man one night in the bedroom window. LIKE, this extremely closely guarded secret, of what fitz's bedroom connected to and who was there and what he was doing, is for a split second (and decades too late) made partly visibleāand the witness creates from that brief knowledge a supernatural explanation, instead of the very mundane truth. it would be easier to believe in the ghost than to believe the actual story of fitz's life! and then on the other hand, scant as it is it does still eternalize a truer knowledge than has ever existed before: that man, at least once, was in the room where that child lived
knowing that having your wit partner die when youāre a child could make you die from the grief or take a melancholy madness that will plague you till the end of your days makes reading smithyās death 100x more painful and not only did fitz grieve their wit partnerās death but ALSO burrich abandoned them AND they canāt even talk to anyone about having a wit-partner let alone losing one AND chade didnāt open his door to fitz till a month after smithyās death AND they had just survived days of trekking through the forged filled wilderness where they were attacked multiple times and had to kill for the first time AND this all happens after months of abuse and isolation under galenās tutelage PLUS this is fitzās second time losing a wit-bond AND FITZ IS FOURTEEN! they were so completely alone in their grief itās a miracle the heartbreak of it all didnāt kill them
it meant so much to them. the fool said it so carefully so delicately. āfriendā was a precious word that could shatter. after years of loneliness, the fool has a friend. my heart canāt take this

donāt mind me iām just distraught over chivalry looking at burrich with miserable, imploring eyes often enough that terribly sad farseer eyes belong to him and only him in burrichās mind. right before this, burrich was expecting fitz to leave, but fitz stood there wanting to stay. how many times did chivalry look at burrich with eyes that told him he wanted to stay.
my heart cracks every time fitz attempts to defend burrichās mistreatment. āsome justifiedā no fitz it was NEVER justified for him to hit you :(

fitz is so deeply a cowed and coerced wolf among prey -- among bucks. the animal symbolism so perfectly conveys the farseers' fear of his potential and desire to control him -- shrewd, through cunning, attempts to befriend the wolf like in a fairytale; verity draws his power and makes it his own; regal attempts to constrain and destroy him. fitz, the wolf in buck's clothing, can pose nothing but danger for the farseer line as long as he remains unchecked, simply because of who and what he is. catalyst, changer, wolf. and wolves have no kings. robin hobb your brilliant animal symbolism --!

thinking about fitzās relationship with hunger in the beginning of assassinās apprentice and how food (or the lack thereof) is part of the reason for his abandonment at moonseye.
his grandfather says, āIāve fed him at my table for six yearsā¦Iāll not feed him any longerā¦Let him be fed by him what got him.ā almost certainly, his grandfather canāt feed him any longer. when fitz ate that night, he āwasted no time filling [his] mouthā and āstuffed as much bread into [his] mouth as [he] could.ā he was starving! given how desperate his mother was to keep fitz and his grandfatherās emphasis on food, their family had to have been experiencing severe food insecurity to finally have the grandfather give fitz up.
food insecurity can be defined in two ways: 1) limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate or safe foods 2) limited or uncertain ability to acquire acceptable foods in socially acceptable ways. while we donāt have confirmation for the nature of food insecurity fitz experienced before moonseye, we do know afterwards. the first day fitz arrives at buckkeep, cob and burrich obtain food for fitz but out of his sight and neither show him how to properly acquire food in the keep. during the time period after the first day and before burrich takes nosy away, burrich leaves before fitz wakes up and pays no mind to fitz as long as fitz is in bed every evening.
burrichās negligence causes fitz to experience both of the definitions of food insecurity. he acquires food in socially unacceptable ways by learning to steal from the kitchens and town, as well as scavenging other food (burned crusts, raw sheel - this can be dangerous to eat, seaweed, fish) which is a nutritionally inadequate and unsafe diet. fitz mentions that burrich sees fitz āfed well enough to grow heartily,ā but we can presume from fitzās descriptions of daily life that he uses the word to mean burrich perceives fitz to be fed and the measure of āwell enoughā is clearly ambiguous. basically, anyone thatās eating burned crusts is not being fed well enough.
hunger is an inextricable part of fitz being forcibly removed from his mother. hunger drives fitz to steal sausages leading to burrich catching him red-handed (which burrich deals with by drinking and leaving fitz hungry for the rest of the day) and forcibly removing nosy from him. hunger drives fitz to eat from the great hallās leftovers where shrewd catches him and makes him the crownās tool, forcibly removing fitzās autonomy from himself. essentially, hunger in fitzās childhood is a catalyst for life-ruining events. and knowing that food insecurity in early childhood is a predictor of depression and may contribute to substance abuse disorders and unhealthy attachments to caregivers, well itās something to chew on.
