actually I would like to talk about the rat sex scene in a serious way. like please let us talk about how insanely misogynistic the implication that fitz can only get it up if he believes he can get someone (a woman) pregnant is. what does this say about the unfilfilling (to him) nature of his relationship with starling, who is married and infertile, and ultimately jinna, who wants only a good time, not a family? the strictures of the family, of the reproductive and property-rights-proving (all the "i took her"s) purposes of sex, have fitz in a chokehold; he is incapable of seeing sex in any other way, and hobb seems to try to explain why in the ensuing rat scene. fitz, the masculine, canine fitz, is incapable of viewing the cat's play as enjoyable; he sees only the task to be done, that is, the kill. he does not play with his food. he completes the purpose, in a way one might call "workmanlike" or "reasonably competent," when he neatly breaks the rat's neck. it is this "workmanlike" attitude that the cats says takes the play out of the rat. in this fitz seems as removed from the feminine as he is from the feline. robin hobb WHAT are you trying to say about men and sex here hobb WHAT are you telling me. it feels very typical "men are all about utility." like at first I might think it was because of fitz mourning nighteyes, but the pregnancy implications are just so wildly misogynist that I cant ignore that. and the rat scene seems to paint the masculine and the (feline) feminine in such irreconcilable terms. the masculine cannot understand the needs of the feminine. they are two entirely different creatures. it is just so awful and ive spent so longggg waiting for robin hobb to reveal the meaninggg.
